Three days after a conference call with Green Bay Packers team officials on Tuesday in which quarterback Brett Favre emphatically expressed his desire to play in 2008, Favre on Friday formally asked for his contractual release from the Packers in a letter, sources close to Favre and the team said.

Wow.
So much for trying to go out on top I guess. Although, ESPN’s reporting is pretty sub-par, so this could be a non-story. Wouldn’t surprise me that he still wants to play though.

The Packers Should "Keyshawn" Favre
Absolutely shameful the way Favre’s behaved this offseason (and for the last few offseasons, actually). If he comes back and the Packers release him he’s likely going to end up in either Tampa or Minnesota (since those are the QB neediest playoff teams) and hurt the Packers’ chances this season. Not to mention he’s got two years left on his deal, which means cutting him gives the Pack a cap hit next year for which they receive no compensation.
The Packers are required to remove him from the retired list once he requests it, but if they’re smart they’ll do what Tampa did to Keyshawn a few years ago…pay him his contract to sit home and rot. He’s already behind the curve for running the offense for Green Bay this year (since he’s missed the offseason) and based on how he’s behaved, he obviously can’t be trusted to be a loyal backup to Rodgers (and even if he could, his very presence will cause problems if Rodgers posts anything but All-Pro numbers). Letting him go to a competitor obviously isn’t a good option unless that competitor pays through the nose for him (which the Packers have the option to wait for if they leave him in Mississippi). And if Favre plays games with any possible trades, then the Packers can just leave him on his farm and wish him the best of luck when he tries to find a new job at age 41 after two years out of the league.
None of the options the Packers have are great, but that seems the least worst route to go.

Minnesota?
The Packers released a statement saying they would welcome Favre back to the team. I believe they were implying, “Go ahead and come back. We’d love to have you as Rodgers back up.’ An easy way of saying thanks but no thanks.
They would accept him then attempt to trade him and they certainly would not send him to a division rival like the Vikings. I even question whether they would send him anywhere in the NFC.
My vote was, and still is, the Baltimore Ravens.

I'm Betting That's The Case Too
Unless the Vikings offer something just insane, like two first-rounders.

Would that be worth it?
It sounds insane but Favre would make them immediate and legitimate SB contenders…

Yes
I think the Vikings would be absolutely insane not to jump at Favre if he hits waivers. And Favre would be insane not to sign with them. That’s why the Packers will never give him his unconditional release…very wisely, I might add.

I want to see something insane...
like Favre returns to the team that let him slip away… Atlanta. He can mentor Ryan for a year or two. But with the money they just sharted out for Ryan, I doubt that will happen.
Minnesota almost makes sense.. but they’ve been talking trash about TJack improving… Favre is still a huge improvment. I think the same goes for Detroit… hell and even Chicago. He could go to any one of the division rivals and step in.
Tampa might take Favre if they trade Garcia… he’s been whiney about his contract this offseason.
What about Miami?? They don’t have anyone that is a given at QB.
Ravens are probably in better shape than Miami… but they’re more poised to make a run.
There isn’t much else out there…

Here's an idea.
I say trade Rodgers to Miami for Jason Taylor. That’s a win-win-win for everyone.

Interesting
But I’d want more than just Rodgers for Taylor. Maybe snag one of their backup RB’s like Wynn, Morency or Jackson as well… now that Grant is the man.

There are reports out now
that the Pack isn’t going to grant him a release of any kind. There’s a spot on thier roster for him, but it’s going to be purely at a backup role is what it sounds like.

I'm really tired of hearing about Favre....
Seriously the guy needs to stay retired. I’m just sick of all the hype of “Is he going to retire?” “WIll Bret Favre play for one more season?” Honestly, Favre’s a douche and I hope nobody wants him if he decides to comeback. Or if he does get picked up I want him to have the worst year of his career. Just how I feel about it sorry if anyone is offended.

Totally
I’m a bit sick of the Brett Favre saga. The guy needs to shut up and be happy. Getting twelve million dollars a year to play football pretty much takes away your right to complain in my opinion. I’d give essential parts of my anatomy away for a chance to be a backup QB in the NFL. Damn.

Perspective
I just got back from two weeks in Africa where my daughter is working with AIDS orphans. One of the comments by a person there goes something like this:
Those fortunate enough to choose their sufferings have no right to complain.
Goes for me, too, of course. Not just Favre.
