Chiefs Criticisms

Everywhere I look or listen I find doubters. I am tired of seeing the Chiefs ranked 29th or below in the Power Rankings. Most don't even believe we can win 6 games and feel that an 8-8 season is clearly out of reach. Entirely too many people are doubting us. Their has been a knock on every single part and/or aspect of the oganization including every position group. Too many question marks??????????????????????????? Bullsh*t, I for one believe Chiefs are a going to be a serious playoff contender.
...What do you guys think?
Post your predictions and reasoning here so it can be debated.

I think our defense will be one of a serious contender, our offense lacks the potential right now…the key for the chiefs is going to be winning with defense.

by Shawn on Jun 19, 2008 6:46 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Disagree

The offense doesn’t lack potential even if the offense struggles it will not be because of a lack of potential. Look at the proven elite players we have: Waters, Bowe, LJ, Gonzalez (1/3 of the offensive starters) and then an extensive cluster of young players with a lot of potential that will fill in the other positions and back-up roles. Our O-Line killed us last year but that is potentially fixed. Brandon Albert (potentially the best lineman to come out of the draft) will play the most important position on the line. Niswanger is an upgrade over the aged undersized Wiegman. I do have my doubts about the right side especially guard but it is still an upgrade over last year. With Chan’s new blocking scheme and tight end (and fullback if one steps up) usage the line will be average at worst. We have significantly upgraded at every position from last year.

Chiefs

I’m always optomistic about the Chiefs chances and you have to learn to just ignore the neational media who have no interest in seeing the Chiefs succeed.

However, we must be realistic about our expectations.

While alot of what happened last year was just plain bad luck, there were also a LOT of things that were serious problems with the team. Now alot of those things have been addressed and we hope will lead to better success. But it is still a work in progress.

One thing we, as Chiefs fans, are going to have to learn is to be more forgiving of our young players as they learn. I hear no end of complaints from Chiefs fans about McBride, Tyler, Pollard and Webb. These guys are very young and still developing and it is unreasonable to expect them to play like 10 year vets right away.

So its great that we’re optomistic, but with all the youth and the new offensive system and such, we need to be realistic and learn to accept the growing pains with an eye toward the future.

Why should we expect any less?

Our two biggest problems last year were quarterback and offensive line. We didn’t address the former and hardly addressed the latter.

The receivers needed help, and while Will Franklin will be good in my opinion, rookie wide receivers rarely make an impact.

Until the Chiefs prove otherwise, the bottom 5 in the power rankings is fair.

by Joel Thorman on Jun 20, 2008 12:58 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't know that I agree with your assessment of our biggest problems

Offensive Line, no doubt. But QB? They didn’t light the world on fire, but the games I watched, I don’t think you could lay the blame at Huard OR Croyle. Huard should have been able to get out of some of his sacks, but considering the other factors, it probably wasnt going to make that big a difference anyway. Both QBs threw interceptions, but it wasn’t an ungodly amount.

In my opinion, there were several big factors in the Chiefs fall last year:

Mike Solari’s predictable playcalling using a scheme that no longer fit the players on the team.

LJs injury. 4-3 before he gets hurt, 0-9 after.

Missed Field Goals both for lack of points and also demoralizing the team. The FG situation was alot bigger than alot of us think. Its not just the actual points they lost from lining up and going wide Left. They also lost points when the coaches lost faith in the kickers ability to make it and sent our anemic offense out to convert 4th downs.

In my opinion, these three things were MUCH bigger problems than the QB situation, no matter who the QB was.

by ChiefDJ on Jun 20, 2008 6:41 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know that I agree with your assessment of our biggest problems

I couldn’t have summed them up better DJ.

Solari: I swear I could almost predict our offensive calling better than the other team’s defense could… which was very frequently. Sometimes it felt like I was watching Tecmo Bowl when you guessed the “right” defense.

LJ: Not that he was killing people… but he was someone you had to account for at least.

Field Goals: Barf last year… hopefully Barth this year. If we could just find the Colquitt of place kickers.

I’ll give it to Primetime on the O-line. Last year was abysmal… especially when compared to the big W years (Waters, Weigmann Willie, Will, Whomever). I do believe this year will mark a drastic improvement.

by Ochophosphate on Jun 21, 2008 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd have to disagree

I think we did address our O-line problems; if not greatly, at least adequately. After all, we got rid of the players who were no longer playing up to par and brought in promising young talent to replace them – what else can be done? Throw heaps of money at the free agents who were out there, some of whom didn’t even bother to visit KC? I think this year’s line will be better than people think.

by Seth_C on Jun 20, 2008 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with ChiefDJ

The thing that bothers me about the QB blame is that Croyle is not afforded the same opportunity to grow in his position as the other young players. Everyone is saying our corners will be young and they’re going to make mistakes and thats ok they’re learning. Last year it seamed like there was an expectation of no Int’s young or not. Croyle IS young and does not have much NFL game experience and the only way he’s going to grow is let him throw until the int’s diminish, and they will. I think the Chiefs exceed expectations this year!

a lot has to happen

for this team to win this year. it is a cliche but this team will have to be like the ravens of the early 2000s and the bears a couple of years ago. the defense will have to carry this team. the offense has talent, there is not doubt about that, but the offensive line is a wait and see approach. if they can protect, even slightly, whoever is taking the snaps and open up some holes for LJ then there is a possibility this team could contend for a playoff spot. the problem is the AFC is a tough conference. the browns won 10 games last year and didn’t get in. j-ville, pitts-puke, tenn, are always tough. the bills, are getting better, same with the texans. and of course our division is always tough, even if the teams don’t have good records, the games are always tough, and our chiefs have always found it difficult to play in their yards.

two other things need to happen: 1) arrowhead has got to be a home field advantage again. over the last several years, teams have come into our house and pretty much pushed us around. that has to stop. the team needs to play well so the fans can get into it. unfortunately the games were crappy and the only thing to watch and wait for was which QB was starting the second half. 2) this team has to be .500 on the road. this will be a young team and young teams need to learn how to win on the road. but if they can get a couple early wins on the road, maybe steal a game they had no business winning, then that will build confidence. there are a couple winnable games early in the season, ATL and Carolina (who isn’t what they used to be). later in the season 3 of the last 4 games are division road games. SD will be good, basically because the rest of the division will be weak, Denver is always tough in their yard and OAK is OAK. Hopefully by the Oakland game they will be out of it and the crowd will be sparse. living out in Sacramento (Oakland is less than an hour away) i have been to their park and if their team is in contention, it can be a tough place to play. the last game of the year is against the bengals. they are a toss up.

basically this team could be good and contend, but there is that possibility they could be real bad too. i am hoping for the first option.

LINK

And see how they are bashing us now!!

what is awesome about that link

is it shows the comments are closed for discussion. nice. i like the idiot who said that since elway was drafted they only finished in the bottom three times. doesn’t he mean when elway was drafted by the Colts and refused to go there and he fell in the donkey’s lap. that’s like saying since eli manning was drafted the giants have been contenders and won a suer bowl. when a player is drafted by another team and refuses to go to that team, that doesn’t make him your player .dumbass donkey fans!!!!!!

Complete cowards! and I told them so and opened a new post.

by kcDONKEYdominator on Jun 20, 2008 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is ridiculous.

I completely disagree with someone going over to an opposing team’s site and trashing them in a post. I’m all for trashing them here on our “own turf”, so to speak, but to post something on MHR itself promoting our Chiefs and mocking their Donkeys them is in bad taste. It’s not like you’re going to change their mind about the team they root for, especially with comments like “worst draft”, “bottom of the AFC West”, and “Kevlar Shannarat”.

Flaming another site like that should be left for the crushing-a-beer-can-on-your-head crowd.

What happened to at least mock civility?

Thank you Mully

It is people like you that give Chiefs fans (and people who live in Kansas City, like me) a good name on our Mile High Report. You are usually the most educated and cordial fans to come over to MHR and post, and for that I respect you.

This kcDONKEYdominator d*ckhead is a completely different story, though. He joined today simply to come over to our site and poop all over it. I urge you, for the sake of the drivel that will come out of his second post, and to keep the high standards we have come to expect out of you Chiefs fans, to please come over to MHr and talk some sense into this guy.

Thank you, and good luck to you and your team next year.

Why do I live in Kansas City?

Why?

I am not up to your standard of being a fan. That is why all of these blogs are connected. FOR TOTAL PARTICIPATION. I am not being vulgar. I will continue to bash the Donkeys, here, there and everywhere!

Don't be an idiot

Nobody likes it when idiots come to Chiefs websites trying to stir crap up. That’s not being a fan, its being a juvenille moron.

You proved that you are one by:
A) Posting what you did on the Broncos site and
B) Coming here to brag about it.

Nothing wrong with friendly rivalry, but what you wrote was insulting and served no purpose but to piss people off.

by ChiefDJ on Jun 20, 2008 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

its like

KC going into Donkeyville and kicking their asses in their own house. so i respectfully disagree. i don’t think it is a matter of changing their minds, but it is more making a point. now i wouldn’t disrespect them in their yard either. i would gently spike the ball and run back to the huddle and let the scoreboard do the talking.

Jeez you guys...

Just wait till the season starts and see how things go.

by Vince D on Jun 20, 2008 3:36 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Relax.

Of course the press has sad expectations for the Chiefs this season—we won a whopping four games last season. Combine that with two uncertain lines, an unproven quarterback and fresh meat in the secondary and what your left with is nothing but just cause to expect the worse.
Now, we have a lot of young talent, but its just that—talent. Unproven and untested.
Realistically we are at least another season away from a potential playoff run, and at least another two away from threatening to go deep. So relax.
Good things come to those who wait. Sit back and enjoy watching the construction of a young team. That can be just as entertaining as winning.

by BigRedOne on Jun 20, 2008 4:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Guys...

We weren’t upset that he came over to MHR and started blasting the Broncos. It started just fine. What it degenerated into, however, was unaccpetable, on both sides. What made it go over the top was the suggestion, both on this site and on SABP, to go over to MHR and flame the site. That will not be tolerated and serves no purpose.

I welcome any fan of any team to come over and talk football, throw some smack around, etc. It’s all good. But to say things just to get a reaction, then come back and try to get more people to do the same is what message boards are for. Not these sites.

I hope you get where we are coming from.

first time reader/poster

Good work to all of you on having the most well written, and seemingly informed posters on a site of the few I’ve decided to look at. As for the crazy donkey basher that’s posting on their board, I agree that is not acceptable.

Now to the Chiefs! As far as expectations go, I don’t think anybody should set them too high for this season for the exact reason we are excited about this team: we’re young. Now do I think we are going to be horrendous? No. And offensively obviously things can only get better, because if that’s wasn’t the worst NFL offense I’ve ever seen (post-Larry injury), then I don’t know what is.

I could go on with that but it’s really late and I’m tired so there’s my two cents. And on a side note, I noticed everybody kinda thinks Tank is a bust or something. It may have just been me but the few times he was in I noticed the middle of the o-line bending back instead of surging forward. So I think he will be good given some pt.

Tank and Turk

Welcome to the site! As far as our two high defensive line picks, I was hoping for more from Turk (11 tackles, 2 asst, 1 sack), especially since he was taken before Tank. As I recall, Tank (8 tackles, 3 asst, 0 sacks) fell in the draft a little due to personal baggage. I was reasonably pleased with Tank last year. If Tank can stay on the straight and narrow, I believe he’ll be a good player. Seems strong, just as you mentioned with the line movement. Turk should get some work from the DE position this year, and we’ll see if he can get to the QB.

Welcome!

The MSM only presumes we’ll be much worse.

But, to their credit, we haven’t done much to get better this off-season. At least immediately, we are laying the stones.

Playoff Contender?

Amen Brother! We don’t have to win the Division, just be good enough to go to the dance. I say we have just as much of a chance as about 24 other teams, minus the major powerhouses. But that being said, when these young guys get the taste of victory in their mouths, and grow in experience through the year, I see us getting better and better. With our schedule, we have a legitimate shot.

by TXChiefan on Jun 25, 2008 10:33 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

This season

There is no reason this team shouldn’t improve this season. Last year was dreadful due to age and injury. It didn’t help that in the previous three seasons youth was never a priority. We stopped going after aging has beens and are focusing on developing our own talent. Playoffs? Although not impossible, it isn’t likely. I think we will surprise some teams this year. It will be an exciting to watch our young players come together.

by cmpotter on Jun 26, 2008 8:22 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Err . . . the Chief's might make it to 24 in the polls by season end.

I love the Chief’s, always have, always will. But honestly, I don’t see them winning alot more this year than they did last year, although the Chief’s didn’t lose all that bad last year. I think it was the defense that failed the Chief’s in the end, and I don’t see where it got much better in the offseason. Couldn’t stop Favre on that fatal final drive, and it seemed like the defense tanked every 4th quarter of all the remaining games. Maybe they were too old, I don’t know, but I don’t think it will take much to start winning. I just didn’t see where the Chief’s addressed the “real” problem as I saw it.

by Enema on Jun 27, 2008 9:42 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

For the most part,

I don’t think the defense was too old…however, it did get worn down late in games by having to be on the field so much. That is the fault of last year’s horrible offense, not the defense.

Well, Law was a bit of a different story. He was too old, as shown by his not-so-blazing speed and his tendency to be knocked over by the sudden gust of wind generated by the WRs running past him.

Been here before

I’m new to the blog (or any blog for that matter). I was in Cub Scouts when the Chiefs moved to KC. I joined the Huddle Club and went to games in the old stadium. I’ve seen a lot of ups and downs. I like where the Chiefs are going. We’ve been a good team for many years, but haven’t had the nerve, until now, to gut the team and build a great team for the future. This year, I’ll be watching for; Do our draft picks from the last two years show the ability to be great players, and do our draft picks this year adapt to the NFL and get better as the season progresses. If we can win 7 or 8 games in the process, we’re in for a very bright future.
