Why Are You a Kansas City Chiefs Fan?
via dustinal
I stole this idea from the always interesting message board Chiefs Planet, of which I'm a daily reader (but not much of a poster). First time commenters jump right in. This is a great thread to introduce yourself (Sign up here).
Let's get to know each a bit better, shall we?
For me, it's quite simple. I was born and raised in Kansas City. The Chiefs are as much a part of my life and childhood as, well, anything. Games were causes for family gatherings, birthday presents and general revelry. The Chiefs not only held bonded my family and friends but also the entire city as well. Talk about having synergy and chills with 75,000 strangers.
Except we weren't strangers at Arrowhead stadium. We were the brothers and sisters of the Kansas City faithful. For a place that at times has wrestled with its small town image, the Kansas City Chiefs helped make sure KC stayed on the map and in the minds of people around the world.
Over the last two years, I've heard from many of you about the origins of your fandom and it never ceases to amaze me how people become fans of the Red and Gold.
Let's hear from you. Why are you a Kansas City Chiefs fan?

I didn’t care about football (or pro sports really for that matter) when I first met my wife. She was always into it, and I couldn’t figure out why. After dating for awhile, she invited me to Kansas City to go to a Chiefs game with her family and their season tickets in ‘03(which are freaking ridiculously awesome). I recalled not wanting to be “gay” and wear something red, even though they all were, and I would stick out more if i wore something else. Not believing her, I just said “whatever,” and continued on. Arriving in the bus was a bit of a surreal experience. I was and still am always impressed by the amount of people hanging out in the parking lots, drinking, cooking, playing games, etc. But perhaps even more impressive is that 99% of the people wear red.
The other 1% wear gold.
Mind you, the real impressions came inside the stadium once the game started. I remember it being so loud I thought my ears were going to bleed.
Long story short, been a fan ever since. I can’t get enough of the chiefs, NFL, even starting to become just football in general. Found myself the other day watching the MO vs. KS high school game on Metrosports a few days ago. I’ve walked through a bar full of Eagles fans wearing their green jerserys while wearing my Chiefs gear and had the WHOLE BAR chanting asshole and pointing at me. Don’t question my fanhood :D
have you seen my baseball?

Eagles fans
Seriously dude I know how you feel. I live about 40 minutes from Philly and Eagles fans are the worst. They turn on their team at the drop of a dime, and it makes me sick. That and I get the asshole chant when I wear my DT jersey out, but if you bleed red and gold its gotta be done.

Why?
I did not grow up to Kansas City. In fact, I have never been to the promiseland either. Pretty bad huh? But, I speak for all non-city inhabited sports fans, when I say “once you call a team your team…you better stick with them through it all”.
So, in 1993, I became a Chiefs fan. Up to that point in my life I just watched baseball and Notre Dame. I was starting to get into the NFL, but found it difficult, as I was in Dallas and really did not like Cowboy fans. They were obnoxious and would turn on their team after one bad play. In Feb. of ‘93 I saw the worst thing ever….....Cowboy fans rioted after they beat the Bills to win the SB. My pursuit was to then find a team that was that had fan that actually cared, fans that would show up 5hrs before the game…...find a team that had integrity, and had a positive impact on the game. Then, in April, my childhood hero signed on with KC. That was it…here is a team that had Lamar Hunt, and crazy fans, and now Joe Cool (not to mention they use to be from Dallas). So, that was it…...a huge fan ever since.

My family moved to Joplin, MO when I was 4 years old…and as a little kid I was a 49er’s fan (in the 1980’s)...my parents divorced and my step-dad was a Chiefs fan. I remember when I was younger that the only MNF games I could stay up late to finish watching were SF and KC games (back when the Chiefs actually played games at times other than noon on Sunday). As I got older, my love of San Francisco started wearing off – especially when my step-dad started taking me to Chiefs games…I don’t know who he killed to get these particular tickets, but I we were sitting front row 50-yard line when Elway got hurt at Arrowhead and he rode that little John Deere Gator right by us…I could have touched him…and then someone else did, with their beer :) Anyway, once you go to a game at Arrowhead, it’s hard not to fall in love with the Chiefs (and brats and BBQ) I have so many good memories from the 1990’s of going to games and getting all this free food from tailgaters as we walked 120 miles from our parking spot in BFE to the stadium. Now I live in Parkville (hence the PV) and am now trying to figure out how to pay for daycare for my 4 month old daughter and still buy season tickets.

Why am I a Chiefs fan?
Well I remember watching either a playoff game or regular season game. I really don’t remember the specifics but I do remember watching Derrick Thomas just blow by the o-line and just killing the quarterback. I remember thinking “That guy is fast. He’s amazing.” Then being scared watching Christian Okoye running through guys like it was nothing. Later that week, my older brothers let me play Tecmo Super Bowl with them, and the rule was you couldn’t be the 49ers (who had Joe Montana at that time) so I decided to be the Chiefs who were growing on me after watching the game. After playing as the Chiefs I whole heartedly decided to be a die hard Chiefs fan…. Yeah I know it sounds really stupid but that’s how it happened lol.

When he put his hands above his head
and called the safety that did it for me too! That was a freaking ridiculous play…wasn’t it against the Faiders?

I was born in Fort Riley, Kansas, and mostly raised in Manhattan (Army brat). My family, especially my dad’s mom, has always bled red and gold, so I’ve rooted for the Chiefs ever since I was little. Even though most of my family was into football, I followed baseball (Royals) when I was a kid.
And then I saw Marcus Allen play, and that was it for me. Ever since watching him fly over both lines into the endzone, the running back has been my absolute favorite position and football has been my sport. I’ve followed the Chiefs faithfully since.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 69
I was just starting to play grade school football. I had watched SuperBowl 1 with my dad and friends and had cheered for the Packers because they had a G on their helmets, (my name starts with G.) As I started to play the game later I saw a poster of Otis Taylor on the wall at school. He looked like an animal. He had his cape drawn over his shoulder pads and it was so cold his breath was streaming out of his facemask.
I sould say here that I am really a halfbreed – Northern Cheyenne. I was born and raised on our reservation in Montana. Our school team name was the Braves. After seeing Taylors poster, I decided that I wanted to go from being a Brave, to being a Chief someday. I played some college ball but never made it past that, but I’ve stayed a Chiefs fan throughout.
Funny, I’ve never been to a Chiefs game. Been a diehard fan for near 40 years now and have never been able to make it to Arrowhead. I’ve cheered everyone from Podolack to Pollard, Lanier to LJ, Dawson to Dorsey, but I have not been able to make it to KC. I will someday.
I was thrilled when I found boards like this one and WPI where I finally have a chance to talk Chiefs with people who don’t roll their eyes back and groan, “here we go again.”
See ya at Arrowhead soon.

Who else would I cheer for?
Are there any other teams? I was born in KCMO, still live here today, and even though I will be moving to Phoenix in the next year or so, I will always be a Chiefs DIEHARD! That is how I was brought up, to represent where you come from. That is why I am a Royals and Mizzou Tigers fan too!!

Because of Derrick Thomas!!!
At some point when I first started watching football I rembember watching college highlights of Derrick Thomas and marveling at his speed and pass rushing abilities. I immediately became a fan so I decided to watch the draft to see where he landed. When he was picked by the Chiefs I decided to follow the team. I fell in love with the style of play (stout defense and punishing running game with Christian Okoye and Barry Word) and the crazy fan support. Although I live in San Diego and have never been to KC, I am one of the biggest Chiefs fan and is all thanks to DT!

Dad Wouldn't Have it Any Other Way...
Some of my first memories are of my dad and I listening to either the St. Louis Cardinals or the Kansas City Chiefs on the radio. And then when we got a TV, watching some of the games. Another of my earlier memories, my parents told me I could have my choice of any one thing in Toys R Us as my birthday gift. I ended up choosing a Sega Genesis. I had no idea what it was or what it did… but it had Joe Montana in Chiefs attire on the box for the game that it came with, NFL Football ‘94.
From the time I was just a young, young kid I was inundated with anything and everything Chiefs. My dad got me a signed Christian Okoye football. I had my favorite poster of all time hanging so that I could see it from any spot in my room of Neil Smith, Marcus Allen, and Derrick Thomas. My number all through Mighty Mites and school ball was 58, of course. Watching the amazing players that graced the field for Kansas City throughout my young life is what contributed heavily to me becoming a fan. We’ve had the luxury as Chiefs fans of watching some fantastically talented athletes in the last couple decades.
Mainly, though, I’m a Chiefs fans because it meant so much to my dad I knew it should mean something to me. And it does. It means a whole hell of a lot.

I also wanted to add...
In the town where I grew up, they would host these yearly Bears vs Chiefs events at the local high school. Former Missouri State Lady Bears would play a basketball game against current and former Kansas City Chiefs. Getting to mess around with those guys and get lifted up over Kimbell Anders head to slam a basket pretty much made for a sweet time. Kimbell Anders always messed with me at those things. He lifted me up by the back of my jeans, so I was just hanging there, as he ran down the court.
Good ol’ times.

I don't know why...
for me its like a sixth sense. Like a couple of comments here, I don’t live in KC, but last year my wife bought us tickets to the Denver game. It was like going to the Vatican City. I felt like I should bow before entering the gates. Eventhough they lost, the first half wasn’t too bad though, it was a dream come true. We sat on the Chiefs side at the 20 yard line about 10 rows off of the field. Since then I have been planning my return, although a trip from California to KC isn’t the cheapest ticket you can get.
BTW, we had a great time in KC. Went to Gates BBQ the night before. I felt like I had an orgasm when I ate those ribs. The City was real nice. I live in Sacramento and the two are pretty comparable in size. We walked around the Plaza District, which was real nice.
Living out here though you only get a handful of games you can watch on national TV, unless you go to a sports bar. Forget about seeing them when they play the Raiders in Oakland. They can’t fill the lower bowl, let alone sell out for the locals to watch their games. I have seen KC in Oakland twice and both times they won.
Why am I a fan of the Chiefs? Is there any other team to root for?

I never had a choice
Rumor has it, I was conceived after a Chiefs win during the 1972-73 season.
My extended family has had season tickets since Municipal Stadium days.
Two of my family members have run the Jackson County Sports Authority office.
My dad got in trouble with our rabbi for taking my brother and me out of Sunday School early so we could make the noon kickoffs. They actually had a conference about it after several years of this, and the rabbi finally had to resign himself to the fact that our family had different religious priorities. This was during the lowly 80s, mind you, when the stadium was barely half full.
We plan major lifecycle events around the Chiefs schedule (particularly the home games). Case in point: Sir Eccles and my wedding was moved from the original date once we checked the game schedule. His family still doesn’t quite understand why.
(I should note we also had a shoutout to the Chiefs in our wedding program.)
The worst year of my life was the one year I didn’t make it to a home game. Coincidence?!
I could go on, but the bottom line is that I am the Chiefs and the Chiefs are me. We are inseparable and I’m in this for better or worse. I’d take less worse these days, but there you go.

The Chiefs are one of those teams, that if you live in the area, there is no such thing as a casual fan, you get swept up in the sea of red and there’s no turning back.

It's all Madden's fault
I grew up in a house with parents that loved the Chiefs. As a small child I didn’t like watching the games because a) I didn’t understand the game and b) my parents were constantly yelling at the TV… and I guess that kinda freaked me out. I was always a Royals fan as a kid because I played baseball. I did get to go to several Chiefs games, though I hardly remember any details (except Tamarick Vanover returning the opening kickoff for a TD one time).
I went to college and was still only semi interested. But around that time the Madden series was getting better (late 90’s) and their franchise mode was much more in-depth. The more I got hooked on Madden (always playing as the Chiefs) the more I got interested in football in general; as I understood more about the game through playing it. After I moved to Nashville, I turned in to a Chiefs nut. I buy NFL Sunday ticket every year so I can catch every game. I went and saw the Chiefs on Monday night when they came to Tennessee (2005 I think)... it was soooo cold. I meant to come see Tennessee play KC last year because it was on my birthday. But by then the Chiefs were in the tank and I just had a baby boy so I decided to hang out at home. I’m a football fanatic now. I still enjoy running my KC franchise in Madden as well.

Chiefs fan from Hawaii
Usually kids growing up in Hawaii end up being either 49ers, Raiders, or even Rams (L.A.) fans, but I always those teams were kind of soft. I was always a smash-mouth running attack and stingy defense kind of guy. So when I saw the Chiefs back in the 90’s and Marty-ball was in full effect I immediately gravitated to the Chiefs style.
Then I started to pay more attention to Derrick Thomas (R.I.P.) and the defense and I vowed to be a Chiefs fan for life. While I loved the Chiefs in the early 2000, I have been always waiting for us to get back to our roots when we had a defense that scared teams and a running game that punished defenses. It looks like we are finally starting to get back those roots and I am really excited about the future of the Chiefs.
I also know I was born to be a Chiefs fan because I absolutely hate the Raiders. My sister actually lives in Missouri, so I hope to make the trek to the “promised land” (Arrowhead Stadium).

Badminton.
I have to thank badminton for turning me into the chiefs fan I am today. Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, I never cared about football (big hockey fan at the time). My stepdad however, happens to be a badminton coach in Calgary, and we have badminton players from around the world stay at our house if they are there to coach or for a tournament. One guest of ours was a player from Denmark who happened to be best friends with chiefs kicker Morten Anderson at the time. Basically, our danish friend took me and my stepdad down to kc and me and my stepdad got to hang out with morten anderson and dick vermeil (at the no 8 steakhouse if my memory is correct, amazing steak). Boom. Instant fan. Enough hockey. My number instantly became 31 (priest), and was even fortunate enough to tour lamar hunts suite, as well as the locker room and field. Both games Ive attented (the only games) the chiefs blew away there opponents, first the rams, then the lions. Ohh baby go chiefs!

Just Because
I have been a fan every since I found out the Chiefs existed. I was a Kansas country boy and back in the day didn’t know much about pro sports until about 11 yrs old in ‘71. At the time I fell in love with the Chiefs and Vikings with a lean toward the Viks. When the Red and Gold won the Superbowl, I was hooked solidly for life.
I can truly say I love the Chiefs. Just like my children and wife, we may have trials and tribulations, ups and downs, and some down right fights, but we don’t lose our love and compassion for one another. There it is. The Chiefs team are like a family to me. Now my 12 yr old son is just as passionate about them as I am. It is funny to see us scream for joy and cry together staring at the computer on game days.
I’ve never been to a Chiefs game, but watch every game on TV or the computer. I’ve been to two Pro Bowl games, so you could imagine my excitement to see Chiefs helmets on the field for the first time ever in ‘99 and ‘00. Extra cool points that TG was playing.
Now I’m in Iraq serving in OIF. Missed last season and will miss the entire ‘08 season, but will be able to watch on the computer again. I will have to get some Chiefs gear to display in my work area. Finally, I am thankful for you fans (I guess you are my cousins?). I really appreciate all of your posts and info about the team. I need it, feed on it, and am really able to relax and enjoy home through it. Thanks. Take care, and I’ll be looking for you all to bring back the fear of Arrowhead by opposing teams. I hear you rock!

Hmm...
I was born and raised in Jefferson City, MO, so I guess I was a Chiefs fan by default. For quite a while as a kid I was completely oblivious to the Chiefs and football in general. Then I remember watching a game with some buddies during grade school, 1993 I believe. Joe Montana. Marcus Allen. Neil Smith. And the man himself, Derrick Thomas. I was hooked. I still didn’t follow the team very closely, but I was interested until about the time DT passed. Somewhere in that time period my mom bought me a DT jersey that I still wear on every single game day.
For some reason, my interest faded for a few years. Then in 2003 around the beginning of the season my dad pointed out to me that the Chiefs had a good start going and I started watching again. The fire was back. And what a year to come back to the team!
I’ve seen almost every game since (used to work weekends all the time). In 2005 a buddy of mine with season tickets started taking me to a few games every year. My first was against the Donkeys and I think that’s what finally catapulted me into full obsession. I’ve been to 8 or 10 now and have only seen 1 loss (last year of course).
Now I’m truly an addict. Hardly ever is there a day now where I’m not scouring sites for Chiefs news/conversation. This is only my second season now with Sundays off so I can watch all the games and I can’t wait!
GO CHIEFS!!!
TOUCHDOWN! KAN-SAH-CITY!!!

'Cause Kimble Anders visited me in the hospital...
Honestly, I grew up as a big Chiefs fan. Mostly because I was born and raised in KCMO and due to the influence of my parents and grandparents, who are big Chiefs fans. My 75 year old Grandma still screams at her TV every Sunday afternoon in the fall. She’s not getting upset; she’s just cheering her team on.
Anyway, I was born into and baptized into the Chiefs faithful at an early age, however, the Chiefs became my team for life when I found myself in Children’s Mercy Hospital at the age of 13. I had suffered a skull fracture from playing backyard football. I lost consciousness and was life flighted to Children’s Mercy. I had to stay in the hospital for a few weeks. One morning, there were rumors that a Chiefs player was making the rounds. Many Chiefs players still do this, I believe. They just seem to take turns during the season. It just so happened that it was Kimble Anders this time. I really didn’t know much about him at the time. It was 1993 and he hadn’t been to any of his 3 Pro Bowls yet, but he smiled, laughed and talked to me for a while. I was very proud that I was in the hospital because of a football injury and told him so, but we didn’t really talk football. I was just so thrilled that someone like him would take the time to talk to me. He wasn’t just signing autographs and blowing us kids off. That meant a ton to me at the time and he was immediately my favorite football player. I now had a specific player that I watched on every offensive down regardless of the play call and felt special pride for when he suceeded. I would of ended up being a big Chiefs fan regardless, but Kimble cemented it for me.
Of course, the best fans in the NFL, Arrowhead Stadium, all the times spent with friends and family around a TV or at Arrowhead, and the best smelling parking lot in the NFL just add to the mystique. Oh, and I gotta credit Super Tecmo Bowl (the 2nd one on NES) as well; 80 yard touchdown passes to Stephon Paige via Steve DeBerg, inside runs by Christian Okoye, sweeps to Barry Word, and Derrick Thomas was literally unblockable on Defense. The opposing QBS had no chance. Also, I could block every FG attempt and extra point with DT. I’m not sure why he was on the field goal coverage team, but whatever. The many Super Bowls I won for the Chiefs on that game just fueled my need to see ‘em win one in real life and helped make me a Chiefs fan for life.

Wow reading everybody's posts makes me feel proud...
of our tradition and fanbase. I was born and bred a chiefs fan (apparently my first two words were “goooOOO CHIEFS!”), and my love for my tea has grown through the years. From the “Home of the Chiefs” to the touchdown chant, the chiefs are what make my blood run red.
That’s pretty much it, except for the fact that I am so excited that we are bringing back strong defense, which is what I was brought up watching through the early 90’s.

Just a proud Chiefs fan
I read lots of posts and few teams have a history of fan pride like the chiefs do. Sure there are the few who piss and moan about the bad season, or the bad draft choices , or the bad GM, but you’ll find more loyal fans here than most any other team website you visit. It’s attributable to the “we really do appreciate the fans” attitude that the Chief’s instill in their personel.
We have reason to be proud, not based on our superbowl appearances, or playoff victories, but in things like you can read in this blog. Hospital visits by players, charity work by players, and a true effort every game, win or lose.
Be PROUD, be a Chiefs fan.
