Who will be the Chiefs Best Pass Rusher?
Alright, So who is going to be our sack leader next year? What are your predictions for each player? Here's a little breakdown for you
Everyone is raving about Glen Dorsey, And I'm definitely not saying that he will not be a premier DT for Chiefs. However, how many sacks do DT's actually get? The leading DT sack leader last year was Arizona's Darnell Dockett with 9 sacks, behind 13 DE's! The leading rookie DT was Amobi Akoye with 5.5.
Just in case you were wondering, Ron edwars had 3 sacks. And Tank... let's not go there.
Okay, so we know that DT's normally don't register too high with the sack totals, that's not what their main goal is. They are supposed to get double-teamed and free up the DE's right? Let's look at our DE's last year.
Tamba Hali had 8 last year. However, there were two factors which no longer exist. First, he had foot injuries which should be fully healed during the offseason. Second, and this is more important, Jared Allen is not getting double-teamed anymore. Well, sure, maybe in Minnesota, but not here. Don't be suprised if Tamba starts getting four hands grabbing at his jersey instead of two. In the end, with another year of experience and no more injuries, even with the double-team he still might have a better season than last year.
Alright, our problem area. Actually, this might not be too bad, especially if we rotate fresh bodies regularly. However, Wilkerson had .5 sacks, Turk and Boone had 1 sack each. Of course they were only playing usually when Hali or Allen needed a breather and they mostly put in on running situations, so hopefully they will combine for more than 2.5 sacks next year.
Our LB's (Edwards, Johnson, and Harris) combined for 8 sacks last year. I love DJ and I think he is our best pass rushing LB, but for some reason Gunther doesn't think so highly of him. Maybe I'm wrong, but in this senior highlight reel I see alot of blitzing

Then again, I also like Demorrio Williams, especially after watching this,

Who is our best pass rusher? How many sacks will he have? How many sacks will our team have? I guess we will find out next year.

Hali
you have to factor in that he was rushing from the left side. They usually line up a tightend on that side, so he already knows what it’s like to be double teamed. I think he will have 12 or more sacks this season.

Agree
he went against RT/TE last season, now he’ll go against, worst case, LG/LT…but hopefully, either Tank/Boone or Dorsey will command a double team, meaning the LG has to address a DT and not Hali.

Gotta be Tamba
Almost by default.
He’ll get around 8 sacks again this year.

I say double-digits
10…Didn’t Tamba have 8 his rookie year? And who were our starting DT’s in 2006? Dorsey ought to at least count for 2 more sacks from Tamba…especially since he is now on the right side.

After last year
And it being this early in the off-season, I’ve been tempering my predictions.
They’ll change, of course.

Gotta be double digits
Tamba’s numbers will only go up by moving to RDE. He is now coming at the QBs blind side and won’t have a TE chipping on him as often. He also has Glen Dorsey applying pressure up the middle now.
The only thing he won’t have that Jared Allen had is himself coming from the other side pushing guys into him. Chiefs will need to eventually get another decent DE for the left side to push the QB into Halis waiting arms as he did for Allen so many times. Maybe the Johnston kid…

Yeah you're right...
moving to right end is a big deal, but usually the left tackle is the team’s best tackle, so we’ll get to see how tamba turns out this year.

I Agree
Yeah, ChiefDJ, is exactly right, he will have a very productive season, maybe 14 sacks. Remember he was playing injured all year last year, and now he will be rushing from the QB’s blind side. Glenn Dorsey will help out a lot, and Tank should a few flashes last year. The problem is the left side of the line. They want Boone to loose 15 pound and be a DE, but I don’t know, I don’t see Boone getting to the QB much. However he is very good against the run. It looks like we could have a very good run stopping D-line, but don’t count on many sacks this year.

Boone at LE
I agree that Boone isn’t going to get to the QB very much, but he should be instrumental in disrupting a pass play, much like a DT. He will need to collapse the pocket from the left side to push the play to Tamba.
However, on obvious passing downs, they will put Turk in at LE. Boone’s sacks will certainly take a hit if he primarily plays on 1st and 2nd down.

The important thing is...
Personally I don’t care if one guy has alot of sacks. My ego does not require a Chief player to be the league leader in sacks.
What I DO want though, is for my TEAM to be among the league leaders.
Last year the K.C. Chiefs TEAM had 37 sacks. Jared Allen himself had 15. If the Chiefs are able to get up above that team total of 37 sacks, I don’t care if Tamba only has 10. It will mean that the defense as a whole is getting to the QB and putting pressure on him and doing its job.
Remember the old coaches famous saying:
“I don’t want Pro Bowl players, I want Super Bowl players”
