Chiefs Final Offseason Needs

The Chiefs still have some holes to fill.  I think they should make 3 major moves adding to the undrafted rookie camp.  First they should sign Daunte Culpepper asa backup for Brodie Croyle allowing Chris Leak, Ricky Santos, and Tyler Thigpen more development time.  This would make Damon Huard expendable so that they could trade Damon Huard and a 4th to the Packers for Donald Driver.  Donald Driver is 33 yet he still picks up big numbers.  Next the Chiefs should trade Greg Wesley a 3rd, and a 5th for Lito Sheppard.  Sheppard is a young Pro Bowl CB who has been very productive despite injuries and remove some pressure from Rookie Brandon Flowers allowing him to develop into the future replacement of Patrick Surtain who is now 31.  I also think they should trade a 7th for Mark Bradford (excellent catching receiver) and cash for Marcus Henry (excellent red zone receiver who can block)

Holes

We aren’t going to fill all the holes in one year and it would be FOOLISH to start trading away draft picks for older players, that is what has put us in the situation we currently are in with needing a complete rebuild.

I want nothing to do with Dante Culpepper. He is a dead end. If I had my way we’d dump Huard (no one is going to trade for him, most especially the Packers who just drafted two rookie QBs) and go into next season with Croyle, Thigpen and a rookie 3rd (not Santos, Im not thrilled by him) AND have a young QB on the practice squad.

Chances are we aren’t going to the playoffs this year anyway and it seems stupid to me to keep a veteran QB as a backup instead of bringing in a bunch of young guys to develop in case Croyle doesn’t work out. We need young QBs in the pipeline learning the system so that if the opportunity presents itself they have a chance to show what they’ve got. Finding our franchise QB should be a high priority. Personally I think Croyle has what it takes, but with his injury history, you never know if he will be able to stay on the field.

There is no benefit whatsoever to having an old washed up vet on the roster as backup to an incomplete team that has little chance of making, much less winning, the playoffs.

Fill the roster up with young QBs and let them learn the system so that when one goes down there is another in line to prove himself. It is that exact situation that allowed Tom Brady to go from 6th round nobody to the Pats franchise QB.

Are you serious?

Thats the craziest thing I’ve heard so far. They need every draft pick they can get their hands on.

And

This situation would have us giving away over half of next year’s default picks – 3rd, 4th, 5th and 7th round.

Not ideal on a team that is trying to build through the draft.

I also cannot see giving away Draft picks

All feelings about Culpepper aside, I cannot see getting rid of Huard in favor of him. Personally I am ready to go to camp with what we have and find the best 53 to represent the Chiefs this year. If we get rid of Huard, give me Croyle, Thigpen and Santos.

Herm has already expressed major interest in Chris Leak and The new offensive coordinator doesn’t think Huard is mobile enough for his offense. Culpepper was mobile he still manages to get a few rushing touch downs every year. Plus wouldn’t Huard be an understandable loss for Donald Driver and Lito Sheppard would give 2-4 years of development time to Brandon Flowers (Patrick Surtain is 31) and 4-6 years to Brandon Carr (Lito Sheppard is 27). Maybe we could trade for Troy Smith. He was excellent while he was on the field.

Unrealistic

Sounds to me like you are falling in love with certain players and are suggesting completely unrealistic deals to get them that would never happen. No one wants Damon Huard and no one would accept him in a trade for a far superior player. There is no reason to pick up Lito Shephard, an often injured player, when you can just draft one thats just as good.

Troy Smith? No thanks. He is not a pro QB.

I'd rather trade some of our older players

for more draft picks instead of the opposite. If we are truly “rebuilding” then lets trade Brian Waters, Greg Wesley, and Tony Gonzalez to add more high draft picks. We could seriously get a 2nd + 3rd for Tony G and a 3rd or higher for Waters, and a 6th for Wesley. I really would hate to trade Tony, actually I would be irate, but Waters could go and I really could care less, same with Wesley. Donald Driver=NO, Lito Sheppard=NO(unless he could be had for just a 4th round pick, then yes), Duante Culpepper=HELL NO, Bradford and Henry=Franklin,Webb, Sippio, and UDFA could fill those roles.

It could easily be interpreted as insulting

I think if you left out the profanity, it wouldn’t have appeared nearly as insulting.

Do you have anything related to the Chiefs to discuss?

Or do you just want to make fun of us for attempting to hold discussion about football without sounding like Raiders fans.

Leak?

Sneaked Chris Leak in there, eh? We haven’t signed him, and I doubt we do.

I’d rather have crabs than Culpepper.

by Ochophosphate on May 4, 2008 11:44 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Like most have already said

The Chiefs won’t be giving up draft picks. It’s completely against their professed strategy of building this team.

Appreciate the thoughts though and welcome to the site!

by Chris Thorman on May 5, 2008 8:29 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Impossible.

The Chiefs would NEVER trade away draft picks for someone over 30, and the Packers would NEVER trade Donald Driver. They love him almost as much as they love Favre.

by Vince D on May 5, 2008 1:12 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

WOW.

This is nothing but erronious, Daune Culpepper…really? The interception machine, how could any franchise want anything to do with him? He is past washed up….He’s not a winner or the person you want teaching a young QB to throw more int’s..giving away more than half of our draft picks on a rebuilding team? That’s just pure crazy, even king carl isn’t that stupid. All I can say about this is think before you write. Please.
