D-Line?
With all the talk on the O-Line I just wanted to talk about the current state of the D-Line. Dorsey and Hali are the only secured position players. Here is what I think or hope (ideally) it will look like.
LE- Brian Johnston, Turk Mcbride, Alfonso Boone
DT- Glenn Dorsey, TJ Jackson
DT- Tank Tyler, Alfonso Boone, TJ Jackson
RE- Tamba Hali, Brian Johnston
They should keep the best rookie or 2nd year DL man on their roster (preferably a speed rusher DE).
I highly doubt this is how it ends up but just for the sake of discussion.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Johnston
If he ends up being good enough to start, why not put him at RE and let his speed fill the hole Allen left? Hali will again provide another solid year at LE with McBride rotating in there.

yea
I thought about that and it would definetly but in college Johnston was very successful against the run. Also I would rather have McBride rotating with the rookie than a proven talent and I also doubt that you will see a lot of double teams on the left side because we will have a very good front 4 with more than adequate depth you can’t double team everyone, everyplay.

I must say
I’m curious to see how Hali does at RE this year. He was pretty good at LE, I think he can impress at RE. It’s the “prestige spot” for DE, and I think he’s earned the right to at least give it a go.

Boone a boon
Based on watching games last year, I think Boone deserves a little more respect overall. Seemed like he had a good push and made some plays. Tank seemed to come on last year, also. Turk was dissapointing. I think Boone has to get a lot of time in the rotation. I have no idea how he’d do at DE. I’m hopeful that both Tank and Turk improve this year, which seems realistic. Guys at Warpaint seem to think Jackson looks good so far. I’m betting that Ron Edwards doesn’t make the team, although he did a decent job last year from the little I could tell. I can’t really imagine Johnston starting right away, but Herm seems willing to play the young’uns.

no disrespect
I didn’t mean any disrespect to Boone he is a good player but Tank has looked really good in OTA’s and it seemed as if Boone ran out of gas a few times last year and he isn’t getting any younger. I think he will do better as a backup and rotation guy behind Tank Tyler, more like he was in Chicago.

And I didn't mean you in particular
Just thought Boone played above expectations last year. And don’t hear much about him as an important link in the Chiefs D. Good post.

Tank will be good this year
He lives in the building behind me and I see him running a couple times a week. It looks like its him and another dude and his pit bull looking dog.
He looks sharp (if the 15 seconds a week I see him counts for anything).

Out on a limb...
and say that this will be the best rotation of guys we have had on the d-line since the Marty days. Gunther will find a way to get pressure even if he has to use some creative blitzing. Tank and Dorsey in the middle is the key to opening everything up.

Expectations
I think that Page and Bowe and other young guys who have contributed right away have spoiled a lot of you guys as far as expectations. Rookies generally don’t contribute for a few years. McBride doesn’t contribute right away, and people right him off. Tamba is a 1st round pick who starts at LE for 2 years, and the fans think he’s being beat out by a guy who was barely drafted. Boone is old, but was still the best DT we’ve had in years. Let’s just hope that Dorsey isn’t slow out of the gate.
I just honestly don’t see us with Johnston on the line on week 1. Working his way in later in the year? Much better possibility. And I see Boone as a major part of our line. While I’d love for Tyler to step up and solidify the position, Boone will probably be the favorite in camp.

agreed here
Here’s how it’s gonna go down. Right now Ron Edwards is the starter next to Dorsey. That will most likely stay that way through TC and into the preseason. My guess is, at least through the first few games as well. Boone may end up in the middle but I think his push on the outside will be good. The idea is for Dorsey to play the Sapp role and disrupt the passing game and get into the backfield as well as stop the run. They’ll have to double team him, so Hali will have a one on one most of the time. If teams try to run left they’ll have a big DE to contend with and if Tank/Turk ever come to fruition, the passing game will have constant pressure.
Projected starters day one: Boone/Dorsey/Edwards/Hali
Projected starters after game 4: McBride/Dorsey/Boone/Hali – with Tank as the primary rotation on DT and Johnston primary rotation on DE

Disagree/agree
Disagree: I’d replace Edwards with Tank for opening day predictions.
Agree? The after-game-four scenario seems reasonable to me. McBride doesn’t yet strike me as one of the top four lineman, but I do think it’s possible that we’ll see a lot of improvement in year two.
Both offensively and defensively, I think the Chiefs’ philosophy will be to identify the best players and then find a position for them. “Starters” for O-line are a much more important decision because of continuity and the desire to play the same five nearly all the time. On defense, the term “starter” is much less important because they’re going to rotate about eight guys during a game anyway, it seems.

step it up tank
id really love to see tank startin in the middle next to dorsy. The guy is huge and extremely strong. i thnk if hes in there it will open up hali and dorsey alot. i just dont think edwards is really all that good and boone while was ok last year he just seemed to be non existant at the end of the year. if were goin youth we have to get tank ready .

Glenn Dorsey
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I swore I remember Herm saying that dorsey would be the right side defensive tackle alongside Hali.
I think Johnston will start at the left end with Tank at the left d tackle spot and dorsey and Hali on the right.

Interesting
I would expect them to put Dorsey in at LDT as a 3-gap player. Usually the DT on the right side is lined up in the 1-gap and is usually the bigger of the two DT’s. He is there to hopefully require a double team by the LG and C, freeing up the RE to face the LT. The DT on the side of the LE is usually more a disruption/pass rushing DT.
I bet Dorsey could play either spot, but I would think that Edwards, Tank Tyler or even Boone would be a better body at the RDT spot.
I’ll have to go see if I can find Herm talking about it, I honestly don’t recall.

I remember hearing about it both ways.
Youd think Johnston will start sometime and it might be better to have the better skilled DT on his side. Tank and Hali on the other.
