Talented problems

If you had to choose between these two talented players with off the field issues, whom would you choose?

MLB Odell Thurman, almost won defensive ROTY honors but was bested by that 'roid freak, aka Merriman. With our aging LB corps it could be an awesome move... though he might need a father figure-mentor type on the team. I honestly think that was the root of his problems, not growing up with his parents.

Problems: DUI and not taking a drug test.

The Good: Has been through treatment and counceling.

Of note: Released by CIN because he missed voluntary practice attending his grandmother's funeral, the woman who raised him.

WR Chris Henry, playing behind Chad Johnson and TJ Whosyourmamma, caught 9 TDs in 13 games in 2006. He's 6' 200 lbs of nasty... and I mean, drink-a-beer-that-someone-ashed-in kinda nasty.

Problems: Misdemeanor assault, criminal damaging of property, driving on expired plates, possession of marijuana, DUI, providing alcohol to minors on two different occassions, carrying a concealed weapon, misconduct detrimental to the team.

The Good: Was seen smoking blunts and tearing up a club but not charges were filed because he settled to pay damages.

Of note: Judge says "Youve become kind of a one man crime wave." And why does my beer taste like ash?

Why do we want to bring in bad influences?

This is EXACTLY why you shouldn’t even be thinking about bringing problem players onto the team. I don’t know all the details on Thurman but he was suspended for a year. You don’t get that unless you are repeatedly having serious problems. Same with Henry.

We have a team full of young 20 year olds. Why do you want to bring guys onto the team with a history of bad behavior that can leech over to other players? Look what happened to the Bengals and Vikings of a few years ago when they weren’t worried about character. We forget sometimes that these players are real people and not just numbers on a piece of paper.

No Doubt

There are just some bad people out there, and I honestly think Chris Henry is one of them. The guy can’t stay out of trouble. I’m all for second chances, and even third chances, but he has already had those and failed time and again by maintaining their troubled images.

I would rather had a bad team, than players who were actually bad off the field. Henry has more problems than Amy Winehouse…

Jarod Allen got into more trouble than Thurman.
Thurman was suspended for a year because in like four months, like six? different Bengals were having issues with the law and Marvin Lewis had to crack down.

I think we could take a chance with this guy. Teams do that all the time and a lot of the players change. We could have one of the top MLB in the game (once he got in the speed of things again).

It could also fill a need for the team, long-term.

Henry… now that guy is just ate the hell up. I wouldnt waste my time on him because he doesnt do anything to better his situation or try to cut these out from his life. Odell has and that’s why I say give the guy and chance. Let him be that almost DROTY for our team.

And you don't think...

that had anything to do (at least partially) to why Allen is no longer a Chief?

I wouldn’t be completely opposed to Thurman, but I can’t say that I would want someone in a Chiefs uniform that didn’t pass the Bengals standards of conducts, lol.

I'm in the minority.

I’d select Chris Henry. If he stays out of trouble, he’s legit #1 WR talent.

by Direckshun on May 28, 2008 11:14 AM CDT reply actions

???

When he has been a #3 his entire career?

by PVChiefsfan on May 28, 2008 11:37 AM CDT up reply actions

He was a #3 to two other #1s, Whosyourmama and CJ.

The Bengals have been loaded.

Perhaps

I just feel iffy about labeling Henry a “legit” #1 talent.

by PVChiefsfan on May 28, 2008 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Please get Henry

Chris Henry’s height allows him to jump straight up over diminutive corners and pull in monster catches. He’s a lot like Randy Moss in terms of ability. Yes, he’d be a #1 receiver on most teams if not for problems with the law. And for all his problems, at least he hasn’t shot and/or maimed some poor schmo like a certain well-known corner. We need to make some Jerry Jones moves. I don’t care if it makes Kansas Citians cringe.

Thats a big IF

...
He might only need a location change, but I seriously doubt it. The guy seems like trouble folllows him around, and that isn’t something this team, or this city, needs.

It’s a big iff for both these kids.

Put a gun to head and make me choose, that’s the guy I’m picking.

love it

Chris Henry is the superior player and problem-child. Who knows what he could be like if he ever could practice or play long enough in between suspensions/arrests. Odell Thurman is good, and the release timing sounds awful from Cincy. But let’s not forget the defenses he played on were pretty awful, although he was somewhat of a bright spot on them. To be sure, there has to be more dirt on him than we know of from the media. Otherwise, Cincy would not have been so quick to let him go.

Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.
