All those agility and speed tests are even more stunning when you take into account his being 6'5 274 lbs.
Johnston has fought almost constant double teams, which is why his 6 sacks don’t look that impressive, but he has proven to be very solid against the run, despite being double teamed, his 74 tackles, 20.5 being for a loss, prove that he can fight through multiple blockers and get to the ball carrier. Very good at using his hands, strong and quick, Johnston plays the game with a non-stop motor. He will have to increase his repertoire of pass rushing moves and continue to train to get stronger and quicker in the NFL.
Now imagine this guy next to Dorsey. Who do you double team?
I can't wait to see this guy play in a Chiefs uniform.

Theres no question he has speed
Im just waiting to see him on the field. Along with speed you need technique. Plus he is going to be going up against tougher guys in the NFL than he was at that little college he was at. I can’t wait to see him in action and see how he does.

It’s going to take him a season or two.
But this guy is a quality rotational DE. Picture perfect for this defense. He could be a dark horse to start in a couple years.

couple of years?
i think he starts sometime this year.
sometime.
he might have some rookie mistakes, but all rooks go through it.
and from what i hear he’s got everyone in OTAs talking nothing but good about this guy.
i cant wait till they play the vikes and preseason where i think we’ll get to see him the most to start out with.

He may start if the Chiefs decide to abandon the season and see what they’ve got.
But I think he’s got the talent to legitimately win a starting spot in a year or two. Most likely two.
Don’t quote me… I’ve been wrong before…

Left or right?
Whenever Johnston starts, would he go into at left end, letting Hali move permanently to the right side?

I think so.
The best pass rusher goes on the right, so I think that would still be Hali.

I guess
That’s what I was wondering. According to what I’ve read here and just watching games, Hali has NFL experience and success as a pass rusher, so I agree that Hali would definitely be the better pass rusher in 2008 and even 2009. Given Joshnton’s quickness and comparisons to Allen, I’m wondering if he will actually develop into a better blind side pass rusher than Hali. I suppose at worst we flop the two in a couple years, but that’s a lot of “ifs” into the future. We don’t even know if Johnston will start or even play much this year.

Maybe eventually
Just because people compare Johnston to Allen, don’t make the mistake of thinking they will perform the same. We HOPE Johnston will be as good, but nobodies seen him play yet and lets face it, he IS a 7th rounder. Hopes usually aren’t that high for guys drafted that late.
Unless he really shines in practice, I would be really surprised if he landed a starting job. There will actually be quite a bit of competition at that right DE spot. They have talked about moving Boone there, remember they have Turk McBride they drafted as a 2nd rounder last year too and it sounds like they might give him a shot at the right side as well. You also have the undrafted DE Dingle out of West Virginia that could get a shot in the rotation if he performs well.
So its by no means a forgone conclusion that Johnston will even make it on the team, much less start. Having said that, he sure SOUNDS like he could be a really good player. But we’ll just have to wait and see how he does.

He'll make the team
We lost two defensive ends in the offseason in Allen and Wilkerson. DE is a huge need right now for us.

Big guys...
On the offensive and defensive lines. I like where this is heading.

How did he fall...
all the way to the 7th round? Esspecially with a high demand for DEs. I knew his 40 was good, but damn I didn’t know he did so well in the other test. I guess the only question with him is why he only got 6 sacks in Division II with those kind of measurables. He might of got triple teamed, lol. I don’t think we could of asked for a better pick for a DE in the later rounds.

Pass Rush Techniques
can be taught…I am sure that Allen the long-snapper didn’t have a huge repertoire at his disposal when he started…being 6’5” 274 pounds and having a 10 yd dash time as fast or faster than the two best RB in college football the last 2 years can’t be taught.
Direckshun – I am not sure that starting Johnston at RE would be “abandoning” the season, though I would be surprised…but crazier things have happened.

I also
am not in agreement, that starting him would be “abandoning” the upcoming season. With the roster we have currently, I do not see us winning more than 6 games, although I will hope and pray for more. I think this years experience is going to define every player who makes the squad and be ready to rumble in the 09 season.

the crazy thing
Scouts are saying that Johnston can bulk up 10-15 without losing that agility/speed.
I wish I lived in KC so I could go to their practices (or River Falls). I used to run by Colts camp when I lived in Terre Haute. This path I ran on went right behind Rose Hulman.
Vanderjagt was a punk and some kids scratched the shit out of his porche (or whatever the fuck it was).
Where is that guy anyways? Why doesnt someone pick him up?
