Is Glenn Dorsey worth it?

After reviewing the contract recently signed by Matt Ryan, I'm again becoming worried about Glenn Dorsey and the contract he'll sign.

If he is a bust, we're screwed.  Big time.  It would devastating to the defense (and front office...another DT bust) if Dorsey didn't work out and was still collecting a huge paycheck.

Even if he does work out, then we're paying someone $7-10 million/year.  Didn't we balk at paying Jared Allen $10 million/year?  Why is Dorsey any different?

Top 10 picks have a massive bust-rate.  I never liked being in the top 10 and I still don't.  If I could go back and do it all over I would trade down again.  Call me conservative, but I'm not ready to lay my future on a guy whose never played a down in the NFL.  Mark my words, if Dorsey doesn't work out then we aren't getting out of this little rut we've been in for a long time.

Tomorrow's post will be about Dorsey too

If Dorsey busts then….hell I don’t even want to think about that.

A Ryan Sims redux, for any team, sets you back a year or two. Especially if your other draft picks don’t work out as well.

With all that said, I’ve got a “good feeling” about Dorsey. Everything points to “YES”.

With a little luck, we’ll be fine.

Its all a crap shoot

Why does there seem to be such a high bust rate in the top 10? Usually because scouts fall in love with certain players physical abilities or reputation and don’t pay as much attention to how the guy plays football.

Matt Ryan got a skewed contract because he is a QB and QBs normally get more, but even beyond that, he is the new face of the Atlanta Falcons and they want to get him in right away so that he has the potential to start early on and to do that, they had to skip negotiating a more reasonable contract.

Remember that the Falcons are on kind of a time crunch with Ryan. Michael Vick could get out of prison as soon as sometime during the 2009 season. Even though the Falcons have said they have no interest in bringing Vick back and he will probably not be in football shape for some time, there are still alot of Michael Vick fans around and you KNOW that if Matt Ryan has not broken out by the time Vick gets out there will be all sorts of controversy and gnashing of teeth by the Vick supporters to bring him back.

But in the end, all the draft is a crap shoot. Maybe you pay a Glenn Dorsey a ton of money and he turns out to be a bust, but you get a Brandon Carr or a Brian Johnston in the late rounds you’re paying the league minimum for that turn out to be superstars. In that case, as far as the team and salary cap go, yes we would have dead weight with the players that bust, but would be getting other players at bargain basement prices.

I Believe

He seems like a great young man who has the opportunity to become a team icon. It really doesn’t seem like he is in it for the money, but really loves the game. Sure, the money is a powerful incentive, but from all that I’ve heard of him, he knows who he is and what he could become.
I also believe that being a Chief, with the proper mentorship and examples he will see in our vets (TG, DE and Herm), he can overcome the temptation of selfishness. Our support to ALL of the players will pay dividends.

In respect to Dorsey

I don’t think we should start panicing about him being a bust. I mean its not like we reached to get him when he fell to that #5 spot we all went nuts. He seems to have that rare DT talent that only comes around in a blue moon. I don’t remember the 2002 draft because as in to the offseason as much as I am now. Do you guys remember what the expectations were for Sims from the pundits and fans. Was he an amazing talent or just the best DT that year? Also if I had to predict the bust in the top 10 it would be this:

Jake Long(right tackle not left), Harvey, Gholston, Ryan(50/50)
