Matt Ryan officially became the face of the Atlanta Falcons when he was selected as the third pick in the NFL draft. On Tuesday, the Falcons rewarded him with plenty of green.

Ryan became the second top draft choice to sign when he accepted a six-year, $72 million contract that included $34.75 million in guarantees. Less than a week before the draft, tackle Jake Long signed a five-year, $57.75 million deal with the Miami Dolphins.

Both players were represented by Tom Condon of CAA.

Long received $30 million guaranteed in his deal with the Dolphins. Last year's No. 1 overall pick, quarterback JaMarcus Russell, got $29 million guaranteed from the Raiders.

Ryan was the first quarterback taken in the NFL draft. During his career at Boston College, Ryan completed 807 of 1,347 passes for 9,313 yards and 56 touchdowns.

John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com.

Chris Long is now jumping for joy, and

Carl is plotting his “piss off the 1st round picks” strategy.

The current state of rookie salaries is insane. The 3rd overall pick just got Jared Allen money.

Rookies should not be making the same as the elite, proven players.

I agree completely

how did this ever occur in the first place. Where did these agents get the balls to of asked for this kind of money in the first place for rookies and who was stupid enough to bow down to their demands. We are going to have to pay Dorsey at least 30 million in guarantees I’m guessing. Jesus thats going to be an average around 10 mil a year salary cap hit. And people wonder why were so far under the cap. Can someone please explain to me how the Raiders and Cowboys can keep their roster together because it seems like they dish out a high priced contract every week.

it is ridiculous

how much these kids get paid. there isn’t any way to control it really, unless the league passes a standard rookie contract based on player position/where they were drafted.

have you seen my baseball?
