BJ Sams vs. the Rookies
With the drafting of Kevin Robinson and Jamaal Charles - both of which are being mentioned as return men - what happens to BJ Sams if the Chiefs go w/ a rookie returning kicks and punts? I don't know anything about Sams other than some highlights I remember of him returning kicks. What else does he bring to the table, and where else could he contribute?
Do you think that all the talk about rookies returning kicks/punts has been done w/out thinking about Sams? It's possible that Sams has the return spot all but locked up, and the rookies will be asked to focus exclusively on their non-special-teams position? I know competition is king, and that Sams isn't going to be gifted the returner role, but does everyone think he's been forgotten in all the draft hubbub, or that he actually might find himself out of a job if a rookie beats him out for the returner role(s)?

He seems to be
pretty much a return only guy. He only has one career reception.
I’d imagine he would have to take on another role to make this team. We have a couple of other guys who can return kicks and play other positions – Jamaal Charles and Kevin Robinson for example.

Sams was signed
in case we didn’t draft a return specialist…he was the best available option at the time, much as Eddie Drummond was the best available option at the time (hard to believe, huh?). I can almost guarantee Sams is history.

Sams Is Gone
Sams is gone because of some of Edwards’ commitment to youth. I’m pretty sure that unless he is a complete catastrophe, Kevin Robinson is going to be our return guy. Only problem is, I don’t know if he’s much of a reciever, and he will have to command one of those spots from the other UDFA’s we just signed.

Sams is gone...
...because he has no other value to KC than as a returner. He won’t make the 53-man roster because he can’t contribute in anything other than the return game. Charles and Robinson will contribute on offense, so Sams is the odd man out here.

I think he sticks on until final cut day.
They got to see the youngsters in practice and some preseason games to see if they can do it in the pros. If they can not then its Sams by default.

Robinson on offense.
From what I understand about Robinson’s college career, they used him every way possible. He carried the ball a few times, and made big plays in the receiving game. The only question on him is if it was due to the poor competition, or if he’s the real deal. I think somebody would have reached for him in the early 3rd round or so if he had 4.4 speed.
