Since defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham returned to Kansas City, his defense has been inching back toward respectability. He outlined that much earlier this offseason by shedding light on the improving trend of total touchdowns surrendered by his defenses since 2004.
The Chiefs gave up 50 touchdowns in 2004, 36 in 2005, 32 in 2006 and 28 a year ago. That’s progress, as mirrored by KC’s improvement in total defensive ranking over the same time period – from 31st to 25th to 16th and 13th last season.

While I agree...
with the comments about the D-line, I still firmly believe that the “Boone to LE” move is a ploy to get McBride (and possibly Johnston) to work their butts off to win that spot. I don’t think Herm and Gunther want a 305-pound DE any more than anyone else.
As for the LBs, I don’t see the problem here. Yes, Donnie is old; he’s still one of the best linebackers in the league, and we have a capable backup in Williams should something happen. DJ is poised for a monster year, and I don’t see any problems with Harris.
The CB situation is still a problem, though. I don’t trust Surtain as any more than a kind of veteran mentor to the younglings, and yet I don’t see anyone who can step up to win that starting spot. Flowers will do fine at the other starting spot, although I’m sure there will be some growing pains as he adjusts to the NFL and the defensive scheme. I would love to see Patterson, Brackenridge or even Carr step up and win Surtain’s spot. As for the safeties, again, I don’t see the problem. Page and Pollard make up a pretty damn good safety tandem, and at least some of Pollard’s issues last year were (as others have observed) due to having to play on the same side as Ty Law. Morgan adds another good young safety for depth and rotation, and also for the big nickel package.
I’m probably being a little optimistic, but I think this article is way too pessimistic about the Chiefs’ D.

Surtain's Okay
He’s just overpaid. He’s not a terrible CB like Ty Law was last year, he should be about league average, which is fine.

I think
Brian Johnston is going to do it…he is a smart, hard-working kid, and Gunther and Krumrie will get him ready to go…leaving Hali at Left End, Dorsey/Tank/Boone/Turk/et al. inside. Will Johnston have growing pains, yes, but so did Allen

Gunther's Fine...As For the D-Line...
...it takes awhile for good defensive linemen to develop in the NFL, and we’ve got some decent prospects (and can always find more). The line took a hit by losing Jared Allen, but I think we’ll be better off in the long run with what we got for him because top defensive tackles are a hell of a lot harder to find than top defensive ends. If we find a guy who can rack up 10 sacks on that d-line to replace Allen and play next to Dorsey, we’ll come out ahead.
