Barry Richardson

Ok so with all the talk about Branden Albert, I wanted to chime in and say some things about B Rich (yes I went there).  Early on in the 2008 draft season I had my eye on Richardson for reasons I cannot describe.  I think it was because I saw him on a few mock drafts being taken as high as Round 2 and remember hearing the name so I looked at him a bit.  We all know his stats (6'7", 330, mobile, light feet, etc) and we know he has had focus issues (once asked during the middle of a game why the team couldn't see a movie the night before) and the lack of a killer instinct, but I am wondering if there were other reasons why he fell to us in Round 6.

Preseason first-team All-American according to Playboy (2007); preseason first-team All-American by Lindy's and Athlon...#4 offensive tackle in the nation by Lindy's and #45 player overall...#3 player regardless of position in the ACC by Lindy's...preseason third-team All-American by Street & Smith...preseason first-team All-ACC by Street & Smith...preseason All-America candidate, and candidate for the Lombardi and Outland Trophies in 2007...listed on the 2007 Football Writers Association preseason All-America checklist......Held future #1 overall pick Mario Williams without a sack in '05...Classic case of a prospect who "Looks like Tarzan, Plays Like Jane"...Has all the physical tools you look for but is an underachiever...Could be a steal if some coach can get him to be more nasty but it's difficult to change a guys demeanor and personality.

With all of this known (project and all) - wouldn't the though of a big contract, Chan Gailey's run oriented offense, and a player's coach in Herm fire this guy up enough to be a great NFL tackle?  What are your thoughts?

I hope so...

Some people just can’t be fired up. I remember in Hard Knocks that Gunther (I think..) talked about how they have to get on every players ass just to keep them ready for games. You’d think the $$$ would be enough, but most of these players have never had to do any real work other than working out and studying film. They really can’t appreciate what it’s like to put in a day of work that isn’t as gratifying as playing in the NFL. I hope he pans out.

To this point

in his football career I think he’s just toyed with the opposing defenses because of his physical size, once he gets knocked on his ass a few times in the NFL I would hope he develops that “nasty streak”. The kid is very intelligent from what I hear. If the coaching staff can at least convince him that this is his job for the next 10 years or more and that he needs to take it seriously. I’d hope he’d be motivated to play.

I personally can't believe he fell

You look at the first round where there was a huge run on offensive lineman. After that they all fell off with the expection of some interior lineman. Out the remaining tackles was Anthony Collins(KU), Carl Nicks(Nebraska) and B-rich. I think he has more upside than those two guys, plus Nicks has character issues. So I really can’t complain that we got a good 2nd tier guy in the 6th round.

Fantastic!

dkugler838, I am right there with you…I was excited about this guy moths ago…everybody is talking about Albert at LT, but if Richardson can get angry, I think HE will be our LT for years to come…the guy is a mountain, but very mobile and was rated as an excellent pass blocker (sounds like Roaf, Pace, etc. right?)

That's what I thought

but none of the analysts or even Chiefs faithful got excited about him from what I saw. I’m interested in the coach’s takes on him. I think they purposely passed up Nicks and Collins because they knew B Rich would fall. Kinda interesting to think about if he pans out.

I just had a gut-feeling about the guy

I could never explain it…I actually think we may have drafted Albert to be Waters’ eventual replacement at Left Guard and Richardson to be the Left Tackle…if it doesn’t pan out that way, and Albert plays LT with Richardson at RT, oh well.
