Morning Update (Quick Edition)
- What's the Jared Allen Sports Arena and Grill like without Jared Allen? I love how the restaurant's web site has a picture of Jared Allen sacking Michael Vick.
- The odds are already out on defensive and offensive rookies of the year. Dorsey is a 12-1 shot to win defensive rookie of the year.
I'm a bit busy this morning so I'm going to throw out an off season, completely premature, haven't seen much video of these new guys, offensive depth chart to get started:
QB-Brodie Croyle, Damon Huard, Tyler Thigpen
RB-Larry Johnson, Jamaal Charles, Kolby Smith
FB-Oliver Hoyte, Mike Cox
WR-Dwayne Bowe, Will Franklin, Maurice Price
TE-Tony Gonzalez, Brad Cottam, Michael Allan
LT-Damion McIntosh, Anthony Alabi/Wade Smith
LG-Brian Waters, Herb Taylor, Tre Stallings
C-Rudy Niswanger, Wade Smith
RG-Will Svitek, Herb Taylor
RT-Brandon Albert, Barry Richardson
WR-Jeff Webb, Devard Darling, Bobby Sippio
Back in a bit with more.

Nice to see
I’m not the only one who thinks Charles will get the 2nd spot over Smith.
have you seen my baseball?

I don't think he will
The way I’m seeing it, is you have LJ the primary back and Kolby comes in when LJ is tired and on third downs.
I think they will use Charles almost exclusively as the second back in a two back sets and thrid downs. So sometimes we will see LJ and Charles in the backfield or other times Kolby and Charles, but I don’t think you ever see LJ and Kolby together.
At least, thats for the first year. If Charles turns out to be a home run hitter, they will probably try to get him in every chance they get.

Only Disagreement...
...is that, regardless of their stated intentions, I think Branden Albert ends up playing in the left tackle slot right off (assuming there isn’t a prolonged holdout and he gets into training camp at the start). McIntosh was horrible in the LT role last year, the guard spots are in desperate need of shoring up, and Richardson is much more raw than Albert. I think it goes Albert/Alabi at LT, McIntosh/Richardson at RT, and McIntosh moves to a guard position should Richardson show enough improvement during the season that Edwards thinks Croyle can physically survive with him at RT. I figure when McIntosh does move to guard, it’ll be about a 40% chance he replaces Waters as a starter and 60% he replaces Svitek.
I think it’s going to be baptism by fire this year on the o-line.

I think Albert will be at left tackle too
I think he’ll start the season at right tackle though.

Maybe
I think it will all depend on how long they take to get him signed. If they get him signed quickly, I think he becomes a left tackle right away. If he gets signed in the middle of training camp, I think they’ll put him at right tackle. If he missed training camp, I think he ends up at guard. I really do believe that the Chiefs want to get Albert learning his future position as quickly as possible though…Damion McIntosh isn’t good enough to hold back Albert for long or to hold down the LT position for an entire season and the fans will be on the Chiefs’ ass if McIntosh struggles there. He’s better suited at RT or guard (and I think that Richardson will probably be the bigger project).

One thing I heard
Was that the Chiefs could possibly start the season with 4 tight ends and NO fullbacks. I guess the thinking is that one of the TEs can double as a FB in certain situations.
From what I’‘ve heard of Mike Cox though, I really like him as FB. He sounds alot like Schmitt.

What do you guys think
Of a set with Smith and Charles in the back field together? Teams would line-up to stop the run and have two shifty backs split out as receivers. Someone would have to get down field easy with all the scrambling the defense would have to do to adjust.

I encouraged the same thing
when Priest came back (though LJ isn’t exactly “shifty”) but Solari only used them together in the backfield a few times…but you could tell the LB’s had no idea what their assignments were
