It's a new day at Arrowhead
In 2007, the Chiefs went 4-12 and lost 9 straight games, including a crushing 5 losses at Arrowhead which turned the NFLs greatest fans against their beloved team.
It was exactly what the Chiefs needed.
Since the devestating missed field goal by "he who shall not be named" in the 1993 AFC Championship game, the Chiefs have unsuccesfully tried to patch up and keep afloat Marty Shottenheimers successes. It worked for a while, but the Chiefs never had success in the playoffs again and finally hit rock bottom last year.
Finally, after 15 years of being "one player away", the Chiefs have committed whole-heartedly to a complete rebuild. In 2-3 years, I truely believe that the 2008 draft will be seen as the cornerstone of future greatness. That does not mean that we will have a good win-loss record in 2008. All these promising young players we are getting will need time to develop and some will undoubtedly become busts, but I think we are seeing the outline of Herm, Gunther and Chans plans finally beginning to take shape.
The first and most important thing the 2008 draft told us was that the Chiefs are truely committed to making the team great long term rather than fixing it up in a hurry. Instead of reaching for need, they consistently through the entire draft took the best player available. Even with a ridiculous 13 picks going into the draft, they did not try to plug every hole, but took players that had fallen well below their value. That may mean a few less wins in 2008, but could mean the difference between being a first round playoff loser and a super bowl winner in 2010 and beyond.
The second most important thing to come out of this draft is that , for good or bad, Brodie Croyle is going to be the leader of the offense. Even before the Chiefs knew Matt Ryan was going to be chosen by Atlanta, they had decided against taking the top ranked QB in this years draft. Even though there were numerous value picks of highly ranked QBs throughout the draft, the Chiefs didn't bite. Herm Edwards and the Chiefs are going to sink or swim with Brodie Croyle at the helm.
This is my vision of 2010:
I see Glenn Dorsey and Tank Tyler terrorizing offensive lines and refusing to let any running back pass through their domain while Tamba Hali and a future defensive end crush the QB from the ends. I see Page and Pollard putting the fear of God in receivers coming over the middle with Carr and Flowers blanketing them on the outside. Derrick Johnson, Demorrio Williams and a future middle linebacker (maybe our 1st round pick next year?) smothering the interior with their great speed.
After shutting the opposing offense down, its time for the most exciting thing in Chiefs football. Watching Kevin Robinson return punts. Nobody really misses Dante Hall anymore, Robinson is every bit as dynamic and exciting. And everyone laughs when thinking about the season we had that horrible kick returner whose name no one really remembers.
With the ball at the 40 to start the possession, the Chiefs first franchise QB in 30 years and unquestioned leader, Brodie Croyle takes the snap. Will he hand it to aging, but still powerful Larry Johnson to plow through the middle behind Mike Cox? Or will he flip it out to speedster Jamaal Charles on the outside? The two-back system developed by Chan Gailey has been fine-tuned and very succesful the last couple of years and keeps the opposing defense guessing.
After several punishing runs, Gailey decides its time. The defense has stacked the box in a vain attempt to stop the LJ/Charles combo. When Croyle drops back, he doesn't even think about whats coming up behind him. He knows Pro Bowl LT Branden Albert has him covered. Thats when Croyle unleashes a 50 yard laser to Dwayne Bowe along the right sideline where the receiver is one on one with the cornerback, a huge mismatch. Bowe has developed into one of the leagues premiere receivers over the last two years, and his rapport with Croyle has made them a feared QB/WR combo.
The game is over. The Chiefs have defeated the Colts in the AFC Championship Game, avenging the embarrassing defeat of the 2006 playoff game. Herm Edwards is finally vindicated. The path they began in 2008 has finally come to fruition. This was what he wanted all along. Not a playoff team... A Championship team.
For the first time in 40 years, the Chiefs are going to the Super Bowl.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Colts in 2010?
Manning will be on the downhill, hopefully, by then.
I really like the scenario. 2010 will probably be LJ’s last year….
Excellent diary, per usual, DJ.
So, Robinson’s supposed to be the man?

That gave me goosebumps..
No lie.
Awesome diary.
As far as the MLB, what about USC’s guy, Rey Malulaluga (sp?)? I have seen him play a couple of times, he is a flat-out beast, and if he dominates again this year like last year (on NFLN they were saying he has lost 18 pounds since the Rose Bowl and is even quicker) I bet we take him with our sure-to-be Top 5 pick next season.
If everyone in your ‘dream’ pans out like you are saying they will, and we add Malulaluga to the fold, we might have one of the best defenses in all of the NFL. We probably will need to spend a high pick on a DE, but we should have some early picks again next year to work with.

Is it time for training camp yet? I can't wait 3 months!
Yeah, I have the day after Christmas blues. Awesome Christmas, but we can’t see our best toys ever for 3 months. This will be an excruciating wait.
Great write up , DJ!

You know as I looked
over to the right, I saw we were playing NE Pats in the first game. They need to be really afraid of our Chiefs now. We have nothing to lose next year!

That what a great visual DJ!!
Everything was great, except where was my man Will Franklin in that write up? He couldv’e caught a 10 yard pass before Bowe’s 40 yard TD reception. I guess it’s just the Mizzou fan in me wanting my boy to do well.

I'm not trying to be a troll here
but when I think of the offensive line you guys are going to have in 2-3 years (maybe sooner??) it gets me thinking.
I’m very wary of Croyle, and while I understand not taking a QB in this draft, I still don’t feel like you guys have a legitimate shot at success until somebody starts playing like a probowler back there…
That said…
Is it possible that Croyle becomes a very OVERrated QB in the near future, just because his offensive line is so good? Where this could hurt you is in deep playoff runs, where he needs to have that special “something” to pull a game out of his wazoo if he needs to. Admittedly teams have reached the promised land without that special competitor at QB, but for the most part, they were one-hit wonders.
PS, I had as much fun watching you guys draft as I did Denver.
Mountains, forest, sea: these render man fierce, but yet do not destroy the man.

I agree 1000%
Unless Brodie shows something this year with mediocre talent, I say he is a backup. I really like Stafford from Georgia alot in next years draft.

What do we expect from
LJ this year? He was very fotunate to come in behind one of the best o-lines in NFL history. My point being if a runningback can be a product of a good line, why cant a mediocre QB be successful as long as he does not lose games for us? We are going to run the ball 65% of the time there should not be a whole lot of oppurtunities for him to lose the games all by himself.

How can anyone know anything about Croyle?
I don’t know how anyone can judge Croyle. He was succesful in college. He had only been in the league for a year and half when he because starter last year and had no older QB to mentor him, a disfunctional Offensive Coordinator more used to dealing with 340 lb offensive linemen than QBs. No running game (Chiefs were on their 5th RB which was the 2nd one off the practice squad), no protection and rookie wide receivers as well as having half a roster of jaded older players who knew it would be their last year because of the youth movment.
Did the Cowboys give up on Troy Aikman when he went 1-15 his first year as a starter?
Did the Colts give up on Peyton Manning when he threw 28 interceptions his first year as a starter?
Croyle had NOTHING going for him when he took over.
This year things should be better. He will have LJ back. A bolstered offensive line. A Offensive Coordinator with a reputation for getting the most out of his QBs. More weapons at wide receiver.
Will he still struggle? Yeah, probably. He’s still young and will make mistakes. But he has the physical tools, he has the respect of his teammates, he has the aura of leadership. Thats where it all starts. If he can stay healthy, I have 100% confidence that Croyle will become a good QB. He may never be a Pro Bowler, but as one hall of fame coach said “I’d rather have Super Bowlers than Pro Bowlers”.

I know something about him
he is EXTREMELY FRAGILE. I like him and hope I’m very wrong on this, but I just don’t think he is the guy.

He also had an outstanding O line
Croyle doesn’t have that luxury. Not in 2008 or probably not in 2009 either.

You know what's good about this site?
“What’s that, Herm?”
“Realistic optimism. Visualizing things that are possible. I want DJ and Chris and all you AP guys to come up to River Falls and talk to the team when we open training camp this year. Maybe even do a little skit. Not a dance, though. I’ve had enough of the locker room dancing… Oh, and make sure to get a hair cut first. You guys are al’right.”

Wasn't in 1995
“Since the devestating missed field goal by “he who shall not be named” in the 1993 1995 AFC Championship game, the Chiefs have unsuccesfully tried to patch up and keep afloat Marty Shottenheimers successes.”
It was the 1995-1996 season so probably January something of 1996.
Not to bring it up again or anything….

That struck out to me too
In 1993, the Chiefs lost in the AFC championship game to the Bills, but the score was 30-13, so I’m not sure what missed FG he’s talking about.
Of course, 2 years later, the Chiefs lost in the divisional game to the Colts, 10-7, where missed field goals decided the game. I won’t mention the kicker’s name here (it has since become a dirty word to me), but I’m pretty sure that’s what the author was talking about.
