Watching youtube clips of Robinson

he looks much faster then 4.69 on punt returns. He looks like what Drummond was supposed to be a one move get up the field guy. He was actually running away from defenders at the end of his runs, which is something you would not expect with his 40 time. Like this pick more already.

I saw another site that had him listed at 4.47

So dont know if the 4.69 is a misprint or if he had a really bad day that day.

Okay

I’m finally able to sit and start assessing the rest of the draft.

Can anyone give me a couple of lines about the second day? I’m reading the comments now too.

My assessment

They did what they said they were going to do. They took the top person on their board regardless of position. They didn’t really address the o-line like most were expecting, though some have said Meritt might be moved from TE to somewhere on the line. I see most of these picks pushing for playing time from the start of the season. The only one I don’t know about is Johnston but he might be put into the DE rotation.

If anything this draft lets us get younger everywhere and hopefully in two years they can all start jellying together to become a good young team. I don’t know how much it can improve us this coming year, though I don’t see how we could possible this bad again.

What it looked to me like...

was the Chiefs had players they liked, and if they were available in the correct rounds, they took them. They took on a project in Brandon Carr, and while I don’t hate the pick, it seems questionable in a draft full of offensive lineman when that is the teams most glaring need. Perhaps the coaches and staff at Arrowhead are content with who was already on the team, and the two linemen we got in the draft and are confident they will be serviceable.

What I saw the Chiefs doing on day 2 was disturbing though. In a draft touted as “the deepest OL draft in memory,” we took few lineman to bolster up our offense. Actually, they took two. In the whole draft. A gaurd and a tackle. In the third round, they had the chance to help make that change to help the team, instead they chose a suspect TE, and a suspect Safety, leaving player who could have immediate impact on the board like Early Doucet, Chad Rinehart, Oneil Cousins, John David Booty, Tyvon Branch, Mike McGlynn, and so on.

In a deep draft of OL, the Chiefs went and took on three prospect projects. None of which were on the offensive side of the ball.

Here’s how I breakdown the second day:

Jamaal Charles – great value for him in the third round. He should compliment LJ nicely, and I think this will make Kolby Smith the 3rd string back now.

Brad Cottam – Guy is huge. That’s about all I can say that’s good about him. He’s injured alot, whether it be due to football or not, but he is a mammoth guy that is pretty quick. I don’t like him for our 2nd third round pick at all, especially not with Early Doucet still available…

DaJuan Morgan – Still kind of suspect here. Everything is saying that with the right coaching, this guy could be great in the NFL. Remind me, how well are our other “developmental” players doing? Yea, that’s what I thought, still on the practice squad. I don’t like this pick in the third at all either.

To be honest, I’m not sure if either of the last third round picks would have been people that would have gotten taken before the fifth round by other teams.

Will Franklin – Well, we needed a WR, he was the best available. Why we couldn’t have used on of the third round picks on someone like Early Doucet, I have no idea. I don’t hate this pick, but I feel like two of our third round picks were wasted. Having said that, I like Franklin in the fourth round.

Brandon Carr – Another “project” defensive player, and another pick wasted not taking an offensive lineman.

Barry Richardson – Damn fine pickup for the 6th round. The guy is huge, and money will hopefully bring out his inner “passion for the game.” Watch out for this guy to do well.

Kevin Robinson – Return specialist. I won’t be upset if this guy isn’t Devin Hester. If he is like Eddie Drummond, however, another wasted pick that could have been spent on offensive linemen. My money goes on the former if we’re taking Vegas odds here though. My prediction is Robinson has trouble at first, but as Herm will say “You have to expect that.”

Brian Johnston – I am a HUGE fan of this pick. After the Colts took Steve Justice, my hear sank thinking they would take BJ next. They didn’t, and we lucked out. This is the one project player that could have went anywhere between the 3rd and 7th round. He’s not Jared Allen crazy in the small school department, but he should provide the most value providing he transfers to the NFL.

Mike Merritt – Not a huge TE like Cottam, but a blocker. After releasing Jason Dunn, we needed one of them. Probably won’t contribute or be a starter for years, if he makes the roster cuts at all.

have you seen my baseball?

Fantastic draft

I know some of us are unfamiliar with the later round picks, but I think they are going to grow on us as we learn more. What I’ve heard so far:

Jamaal Charles: We keep talking about him as the 3rd string back, but I really don’t think that is what hes going to be. Charles is the Anti-LJ. Everything that makes LJ a great back, Charles does the opposite. Whereas LJ likes to run over guys, Charles makes them miss. Whereas LJ builds up steam, Charles is explosive within a step or two. Whereas LJ is a north-south runner, Charles can get to the corner and cut it up field on a dime. Charles also is a great pass catcher, once he had an 80 yard run and 70 yard pass catch in the same game. Rather than Charles being the 3rd string back, I see him as the Maurice Jones-Drew of the Chiefs. I think he will come in in 2 back sets with LJ to cause coverage problems. They going to give it to LJ and smash them in the mouth or flip it to Charles and have him explode around the corner? Kolby will continue to be LJs primary backup.

Brad Cottam – If he can stay healthy, no other TE has as much upside as Cottam. Hes going to primarily be the blocking TE, but at 6’8, 280 lbs, thats a big target in the end zone in short yardage. He also has speed for a guy that big, running a 4.6 40. I know some would have preferred Rucker, but they primarily wanted a blocking TE for this pick and Rucker isnt that.

DaJuan Morgan – At first this was a WTF moment for me. But the more I looked into it the more I liked him. I think hes going to be the backup safety and primarily a special teams guy. At least at first. He also has the ability to play the Nickel CB if they like him better there. The word is that he has tons of potential, but is still a little raw. One thing I like about him already, hes talking about how much he likes blocking punts…

Will Franklin – Im not a mizzou fan, but I liked Franklin as our WR pick in this draft. We NEED a burner to complement Bowe. Franklin was the fastest WR at the combine with a 4.37 40. He also has nice measurables, is 6’ 210 lbs. If he can use that speed to effectively stretch the field in the way Sammie Parker was never able, this would be a fantastic find for the Chiefs.

Brandon Carr – What Im hearing about Carr is that he may turn into our man to man “island” CB for when they move Pollard into the box to stop the run. Carr has all the speed and height you look for in a man to man CB, hes just from a small school. He has alot of work to do on his technique to be a good coverage guy in the NFL, but Herm knows CBs and apparently was raving about this guy the morning before they picked him. He may not be great next year, but he could be a key piece for the Chiefs in 2 or 3 years.

Barry Richardson – Good pick for the 6th round. He’s not real aggressive and is kind of soft, but has excellent size. I thought they got him to be a Guard, but apparently the Chiefs think he can be a RT down the road. I would see him on the practice squad at least a year, but you never know, they didnt put Herb Taylor on the PS.

Kevin Robinson – This guy Im excited about. Broke all kinds of return and all purpose records. Saw some video of some returns he did and he definately has some moves. Whether he can translate his success from the small school to the NFL remains to be seen, but if he can get the ball past the 20 yard line on kickoffs hes a huge upgrade over what we had last year. He could also turn out to be the next Dante Hall.

Brian Johnston – What I keep hearing about Johnston is that he’s the next jared Allen. Late round pick that will eventually flourish. I dont know about that, but can you really waste a 7th round pick?

Mike Merritt – Eh, why not? 7th to last pick in the draft. Herm mentioned that with Chan Gaileys offense there is alot of 2 TE sets. If thats the case, they could take 4 TEs on the roster. Ive heard they might put Merritt on the O-line as a Guard, but at 263 lbs he would be grossly undersized. I think if he made the roster, he’d just be a backup for Cottom.

+1.

Merritt doesn’t make much sense to me, but everyone else I like a lot and Merritt was only 7 picks from the end, so I’ll let it slide.

Excellent, excellent, excellent draft.

Also

Was the previous thread locking up for anyone else? It seems like at around 350+ comments the site will lock up when I go to that post.

Just sent

Brandon Albert, Jamaal Charles and Brandon Flowers videos to the FanShot section.

I really like the Charles pick. We drafted LJ in Priest’s heyday so this is no surprise.

I had seen on NFL.com yesterday after the day was over

that there was talkk of several teams telling guys they were going to be taken as UDFA’s right after the whole thing was over. Casserly was acting like this might be an issue of unfairness somehow.

IMO Carl should have no problem

getting all day 2 guys to sign contracts by this Friday.

Santos and Octavien

Santos has some mind blowing numbers, check the completion % on this guy:

Octavien is a short statured OLB with injury issues:

I like Octavien

his scouting report sounds like he’s the ideal rookie FA – hurt for three years, 1 healthy year when he was impressive…what do we have to lose?

I remember

Cox’s name coming up a few times before the draft. Ga Tech..makes sense.

Luke Swan is a guy I like alot

He is Wes Welker Jr., a quick little fearless white guy that can return kicks. I love it. If you guys remember I was talking about this guy months ago as a 7th round pick.

Here's a site with some more...

http://www.kffl.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229286

Minnesota signed Radovich and some of the other quality UDFAs. The Chiefs don’t appear to have signed anyone else for offensive line.

Seriously, I hate Carl Peterson.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.
