Draft Day Overflow Thread
And with the 34th pick in the NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select:
Virginia Tech CB Brandon Flowers
This is a solid pick up in a major position of need. Kudos to the Chiefs' draft team. So far, they're doing a fantastic job. I'd imagine the Chiefs are feeing good about some later round linemen, which is why they would skip over that position in the second round.
We're approaching the second round folks. The Chiefs have had an ideal draft so far in many fans' eyes -- LSU DT Glenn Dorsey with the #5 pick and Virginia OG Brandon Albert at #15 via a trade with the Detroit Lions.
I opened this thread up because the first draft thread was freezing up on me. Let me know if this happens to you at all -- chiefssportsblognation@gmail.com.

Didn't have any trouble.
Though I’m glad SB Nation finally got around to updating the football blogs to the new format.
Yep
It was a long process. I think it came out pretty damn well.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Definitely.
I’ve been on multiple baseball blogs up to this point, just waiting for AP’s turn to come around. It’s a much more convenient format.

Just got back in
Battery issue in the parking lot of a 7 eleven. I’m almost freaked out.
Glad to be on the couch with a beer.
I love the new auto-refresh...
and the entire SB Nation 2.0.
Am in absolutely frickin’ love with it.
It has made this Draft a little better, although it is tough to get better than getting Dorsey and Albert so far…
Ive heard alot of people talk smack about brandon albert in the time leading up to the draft. I gotta say, so far im excited about our picks! Definately have done what Herm set out to do. Lets see what other picks we can get.
A lot of that smack
was based on picking Albert at #5. I think we got a great deal.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions
Exactly.
I was one of Albert’s biggest detractors, because I had no interest in spending the #5 overall pick (or even something like #10 after trading back) in a guard, who might be a tackle.
At 15, and having already picked up Dorsey, it is great value and I love the pick.
Is It Just Me...
or could Mike Mayock single handedly take over this NFL Network draft program and it be all the better for it?
It's almost like he has too much inside info

It's amazing...
how one man can have so much insight.
Mike Mayock >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Kiper Jr.
by mynameistyler on Apr 26, 2008 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions
I mean, that's a huge hit
If he came out last year he would have been the 2nd tackle taken behind Joe Thomas.
He is a player. We missed out there.
That sucks.
IMO, he's an elite tackle
but, I don’t really do this full time so who knows…

IF

That was a tremendous reach for Baker...
So while I wanted him at 35, I’m over it.
Right now, I want to sit at 35 and hope one of the ‘good’ corners fall to us. Jenkins, Cason or Flowers.
Mendenhall is gone right now to Dallas, I bet.
probably...
Mendenhall is the better RB, IMO, but Felix Jones matches up better compared to Mario Barber…
Is Mendenhall's...
one year of numbers what’s hurting him right now?
by mynameistyler on Apr 26, 2008 4:40 PM CDT up reply actions
Mendenhall
goes to the Steelers. Hes a power RB, the kind they love and works well in their set.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 4:41 PM CDT reply actions
Good call.
Although they do have Willie Parker…
I wouldn’t be surprised if someone like Detroit tried to trade back into the first round and grabbed Mendenhall…
I am seriously loving the NFLN commentary...
Deion is crazy like Keyshawn, but good crazy IMO.
Mayock is worlds better than Kiper Jr, and right almost every time, and I like Marshall Faulk.
I was planning on switching back and forth, but I have stuck mostly with just NFLN. They are just so much better.
Plus, Eisen >>>>> Berman.
+1 on Eisen over Boomer
It all depends on if you want insight or catchphrases. NFLN offers the former, ESPN the latter.

Brohm/Henne
If they fall to the 2nd, should we take them to compete with Croyle?
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 4:43 PM CDT reply actions
I'm of the side that thinks...
Croyle doesn’t need pushing yet. He and Bowe really hooked up when they were on the field together. Croyle’s got a gun on him, just a little erratic. I’d like to stick it out with him, and more so address our CB need before turning to any QB selections.

Easily the best draft I've ever seen...
Last year, I watched more ESPN than NFLN. This year, NFLN instead of ESPN. Positive development…
Love the new 10-minute per pick rule. Makes things so much more exciting, and there doesn’t seem to be as much ‘dead time’ as before. Usually, by the time they are done discussing the previous pick, and spend a couple of minutes on who the upcoming team might pick, the clock is out and the pick is up. Great stuff…
Lastly, the Chiefs have had an awesome draft so far…
I’m loving it right now…
Me too
I kept thinking, “Was I just not that into the draft last year?”
The new format, the Chiefs great draft so far, and frankly this auto refresh are going to make my month.

QUARTERBACK, QUARTERBACK
Great first round. They probably got the best player in the draft, plus one that was in their top five (or maybe top 2 or 3). Dorsey was a no brainer dumb luck pick. Kudos to Carl on getting Albert. He probably can’t afford to screw up on getting them signed in view of the Chiefs’ dire situation and their cap room.
NOW DRAFT THE BEST AVAILABLE QUARTERBACK IN ROUND TWO!!
by Kansas City Oracle on Apr 26, 2008 4:47 PM CDT reply actions
gotta be
henne is over-rated. i don’t like a QB in the 2nd though with so much left to fill. especially at o-line
have you seen my baseball?
And Brohm was an early first coming into this season.
by DThomasReigns on Apr 26, 2008 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions
Don't Like Henne At All
Don’t know why everyone’s so high on him, other than he played at Michigan. He never really impressed me with his performance and he had a lot of weapons to work with. I’d much rather have Brohm.
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.
I think the Chiefs like Brohm
If available, with an owner who wants a franchise quarterback, I don’t see how they could resist.
by Kansas City Oracle on Apr 26, 2008 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions
erik ainge
i dont really like henne or brohm alot. erik ainge was a leader at tennessee and played all 4 years. plus, hes a big quarterback who can actually see over the O-line, not like Croyle, the little twerp.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 4:52 PM CDT reply actions
any young
qb with little nfl experience would look weak behind last years’ o-line, so lets stop clamoring for a qb right now, ok?
by The DBowe Show on Apr 26, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions
I saw Ainge
play a few games in Knoxville at UT his freshman year and I said from the first time I saw him that I thought he could be a successful NFL QB.
I like him.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions
i do prefer ainge
to the other qbs because we wouldnt have to use a 2nd round pick on him
by The DBowe Show on Apr 26, 2008 4:53 PM CDT up reply actions
Maybe in a little while...
I hate the short-tall argument on QBs, it is about 13th on the list for me on who is better. Who cares.
I haven’t looked that far down, but I would wait until the 4th or 5th round before we take someone like Ainge.
I’m not against it, just not for awhile now.
And frankly, I would rather take Woodsen…
short tall
does matter for QBs. look at the best QBs in the NFL: Manning, Manning, Brady, Roethlisberger, all are huge. The big QB wins, while the little one gets dominated by big D-lineman.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions
with the 35th pick in the nfl draft
the kansas city chiefs select. manute bol!
by The DBowe Show on Apr 26, 2008 5:14 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd Be Okay With Ainge In The 3rd or 4th
Not in the 2nd, though…I think if Brohm’s available in the 2nd we need to consider him. Collins would be a good pick too, I think, but a bit of a reach that high. But we do need o-linemen and I think Collins can make it.
I agree with everyone on this thread who said Mayock’s better than Kiper, by the way…I tried tuning into ESPN’s coverage for a bit and thought they were terrible in comparison to the NFLN.
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.
WOW!
Who had Chris Johnson in the first round?
He is crazy fast, sure, and VY needs some options, but still.
Wow.
Devin Thomas is still out there.
What about WR? If Desean Jackson is available at 35, do we take him as the speedster to match up with Bowe? Or do we take Devin Thomas if he is still there? Limas Sweed, who I am REALLY high on?
I'm not sure about that either
The Titans chose him for a reason and I’m racking my brain to figure it out and I can’t.
I guess LenDale White isn’t working out?
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 4:54 PM CDT up reply actions
of course
we take desean jackson if he is there. im actually liking a WR at 35 more and more now. especially because there are so many quality ones still on the board right now. if they aren’t there, where do we look, O-line again? maybe a tackle?
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 4:56 PM CDT up reply actions
anybody hear
what espn just said about first round receivers? not having impact in their first years? i liked our guy…

by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions
early doucet
was just mentioined as a potential steal. when do you think he will go? if we could get him later, he might work well in our scheme. as mentioned before, he and bowe both are out of LSU, so maybe coming to our scheme from LSU is easier?
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 4:59 PM CDT up reply actions
what about
linebackers. are we looking to get anyone to pair with derrick johnson in the first day? or are we still focusing on the O-line?
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 4:58 PM CDT reply actions
RIght now, here are the positions I want in order:
1) Corner
2) O-Line
3) WR
4) QB
Jenkins/Cason/Flowers is still my favorite option at #35, with someone like Desean Jackson or someone my next option.
why do we
have to take a corner? we are so weak at so many spots, shouldn’t we take the best player available when we’re up, as long as it isn’t somewhere where we are already set? it doesn’t make sense to reach for a corner or O-lineman if someone like jackson or the MSU receiver(forgot his name) are there.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions
Look at the Falcons,
They traded Hall and need CBs. And 2 (now) of the first picks in the 2nd. This is the most treacherous of situations in this draft since the Falcons have the same needs.
by DThomasReigns on Apr 26, 2008 5:06 PM CDT up reply actions
we
should have taken otah instead of albert. he’s going to be a star.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions
its a bit early
for an otah vs. albert debate. otah is a project, we want rookies who can play right away
by The DBowe Show on Apr 26, 2008 5:12 PM CDT up reply actions
why do
they have to play right away? we aren’t going to seriously compete for several years, so Otah is what we should be looking for when we are rebuilding. We need players with huge upside, ti doesn’t matter that they won’t be ready for a year or two.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions
albert
arguably also has upside. right?
by The DBowe Show on Apr 26, 2008 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Are all of these rookies going to play?
Or for that matter, make the roster? For all the commotion we’re making about having 12 picks, alot of them are late. Our last pick, the perverbial Mr. Insignificant, will surely be on the practice squad. But are we going to have a million rookies on our squad like the Titans did a few years ago? I guess what I’m saying is, how many of these guys do you guys think are really going to help the Chiefs.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 5:15 PM CDT reply actions
well
to answer that, a vast majority. thats the whole idea of this draft for us. have you been paying much attention in the last few months?

All Of The Rookies Will Probably Play
We’re that devoid of talent with the veterans.

or merling for that matter
but yeah if either of those are there, i’d be down. we’d have a scary d-line, we already do. wow it feels good to say that just days after allen left

i want
a receiver or henne/brohm at 35. theres a good chance at least one of henne, brohm or jackson will still be there.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions
Cant just focus
on the defensive side of the ball. Its our offense that hasnt been productive.
the way we play football now
requires a fantastic defense. and we’re building that. and i’m not complaining
by The DBowe Show on Apr 26, 2008 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions
yep
i’m thinking protection and maybe another weapon (like a fast wideout) but that’s not as neccesary as defense when you’re playing hermball.
young qbs without protection
i want henne and brohm to supplement croyle. maybe we can also pick up carr too and have four young rattled qbs. competition is healthy.
haha
love it. why not throw in harrington? is he still avaliable. what about marinovich? can we bring him out of retirement?
by The DBowe Show on Apr 26, 2008 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions
if young qb's
without protection can’t develop, then why does everyone seem to think that a small, oft-injured player like brodie croyle still has a chance of developing? realistically, we need a qb who can step in once our O-line is developed.
by ArrowheadRed5658 on Apr 26, 2008 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions
youre right
if we’re going to draft a qb, lets not do it this year, but next year or the year after, when our o-line is developed. then we could have a young qb ready to succeed.

but with the way things have gone down these last two years, it would be a nice decent thing to do to let the Chiefs mgmt know we appreciate what they have done with the Draft picks. Just my opinion.
You know what sucks about this
In 3 years if the Chiefs are an awesome team and the players drafted this year are the core of that team, Carl Peterson will claim all credit for it.
