Draft Day Live Blog
- #1 Miami Dolphins - OT Jake Long
- #2 St. Louis Rams - DE Chris Long
- #3 Atlanta Falcons - QB Matt Ryan
- #4 Oakland Raiders - RB Darren McFadden
- #5 Kansas City Chiefs - DT Glenn Dorsey
Yes! Fantastic pick by the Chiefs' brass. Glenn Dorsey has routinely been called the best player in this draft and the Chiefs obviously could not pass on his talent. Even with Herm Edwards penchant for rounding up picks, Dorsey was simply too good to pass up.
Making this pick even more incredible, the Chiefs turned down a last minute offer from the Saints. The offer was this year's first round pick (#10) and next year's second round pick.
**UPDATE 12:05 PM CDT** PFT is reporting that ESPN said that the Raiders will select RB Darren McFadden with the #4 pick.
Well, here we are. The most important draft in the history of the Kansas City Chiefs.
I'll be updating this post with the picks. In the meantime, we have a plethora of fantastic FanPosts to keep you entertained. Check them out to the right side of the page. NFL.com's coverage is here.
So, dive right in and start commenting.

Whats the chance, since we heard all thr rumors this Spring about Al Davis
canning Lane Kiffen, that Kiffen screws Davis with the fist pick and selects a nobody? Woudn’t that be a hoot!
Remember Al uses a walker, he cant chase down the guy who takes the card up to Goodell.
Finally
After a hectic two days with Miss Arrowhead Pride’s family, I’m sitting down in front of the computer and finally feeling relaxed.
GOOOOOOOO CHIEFS!!!!
Chiefs are on the clock
From PFT the Raiders will take McFadden.
Rams will take C Long
Falcons will take Matt Ryan
Raiders take McFadden
That means Dorsey for us !!!!!!!!!!!! Or this is all trade bait.
Nice
Glenn Dorsey? I’ll take it. He’s Kiper’s #1 rated player.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd rather have Ellis.
And if Dorsey is available, we should trade back with the Saints or someone who is in love with G. Dorsey, and then pick up an OT later on.
Good point
Dorsey does provide a lot more trade leverage than Ellis.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Disagree
I love the idea of trading down and getting more picks, but if Dorsey is on the board at #5 the Chiefs need to take him.
Dorsey is the one transcendent talent in this draft, the one guy who will make other players around him better, and fills a slot that has been a consistent need for the Chiefs since the days of Dan Saleaumua. Dorsey will make Tank Tyler a better player, will free up our linebackers to make tackles, and will compensate for fact that we will be lacking at defensive end and cornerback.
Draft Dorsey if he is there. If Dorsey is gone, trade down and acquire more picks.
by BlameChannel53 on Apr 26, 2008 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions
That's my vote
I’d love to have Dorsey.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions
You know what, you may have just changed my mind...
I have thought since January that since we play mostly a Tampa 2 scheme, Sedrick Ellis would be the better fit for our D.
Plus, I figured Dorsey would, without a doubt, be gone by the time we picked.
But y’know, it would be pretty sweet if we got Dorsey, and while I’m still not going to go as far as dying to choose Dorsey over Ellis, I certainly won’t be upset if we choose Dorsey.
Honestly, I trust Herm and you guys, and since most of you guys (and Herm, from what I have read) like Dorsey better, I’ll defer.
Regarding Brandon Albert, though, I’m sticking my ground. ;)
Bob Gretz
i still cant believe he was fired. he was actually accurate unlike whitlock.

ESPN projections
If it goes down this way….
Long
Long
Ryan
McFadden
......
Dorsey is there. So is Gholston. Those are two guys that several teams would be willing to give something up for.

ESPN Draft projection
It’s in that PFT link too.
1. Jake Long
2. Chris Long
3. Matt Ryan
4. Darren McFadden
Chiefs will rob other teams if they trade down from Dorsey
Its going to take one hell of a deal to get the Chiefs to trade down from Dorsey. Peterson is going to hold them up for all he can get out of them.
Shockey?
Do we field 2 studly tight ends? I say no, but it’s interesting. I’d pull the trigger on Dorsey after losing Allen

The media is getting played hard
This is the thickest BS being swallowed as truth I have seen in a long time. The draft may go down as is reported, but this smacks of trade posturing.
Agreed
PFT made a good point. If these reports are to be believed, then someone is leaking info from the war room. That would be tough to believe.

Thanks
I always catch myself actually believing these reports.
I enjoy reading the rumors, but I’m in the I’ll believe it when I see it mode
by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions
I buy all of that up to the Raiders
I concur, the Chris Long thing seems legit, and he does have Gattica’d DNA, but Atlanta, well I kinda trust the rumors, and Ryan would effectively negate the Vick scandal, but I never trust what Al Davis is doing.
by Official Arrowhead Pride Parade on Apr 26, 2008 12:23 PM CDT reply actions
So what happens if McFadden falls?
I mean sure Al Davis likes the flashy flashy but old coot is loco, so what do we do if we’ve got the RB in the draft in our lap with LJ in the wings?

Don't think we'll do it
But there are plenty of teams who would…
by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions
We entertain trade offers
If that’s even possible in the ten minute window.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 12:28 PM CDT up reply actions
I wouldn't mind taking him.
I am not going to lobby for it though. LJ only has about 3 years of peak production left in him, max. We could extend that and extend the life of McFadden. Both would have contracts to be happy with (for awhile). LJ, DMC, and Kolby would be a stout stable.
But I think it is the most unlikely scenario.

Here is a draft day question sorta
What of Charlie Casserly as Chiefs next GM? Been around the NFL quite awhile.
I still like the idea of Marty replacing Carl
He is a players type of guy, knows the game inside and out. Great talent evaluator. Needs a job.
Yeah I like that idea also
Is that what Marty is holding out for?
I'm up for Marty as GM...
As long as he doesn’t try and get back into coach as a dual Coach/GM.
That never, ever, ever works…
That be OK, but the first time he screws up on a player
the angry roar of, “he’s the Real Deal!” will be deafening.
by DThomasReigns on Apr 26, 2008 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions
not that it matters...
but casserly talks like he knows everything on NFL network. he also said he would never draft aquib talib.
by thechiefsarrow on Apr 26, 2008 12:33 PM CDT reply actions
Sure.
We take Dorsey at #5 if he falls, then we trade up to something like #11 if Albert is still there from #17 and take him there.
I don’t want to do that at all, I like Chris Williams much much better, but it is possible…
Rumors
are saying Chris Williams has a neck injury that wasn’t reported.
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Is it serious?
I really like him, so hopefully that it isn’t serious, and he will slide to #17 and we can snap him up.
Albert will probably be around at #17
The only other team I’ve heard him associated with is #23 to the Steelers. Who cares what McShay or Kiper say?
by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions
That's what ESPN had
They have us moving down to #10 (From Saints) and drafting Alberts, so i could see him being there at #17

No way this is actually truth that is being revealed.
Sure, it might happen this way, but I wouldn’t be shocked if even a couple of teams stray from the supposed, released list.
Matt Ryan
Just popped off with at the end of the day, gee who has he been talking to.
Thats ok
We still have Brodie and Damon we will be fine.
Ravens trying to move to number two
They want Matt Ryan.
That would be a dumb move...
Although I would like it, since we would then be absolutely guaranteed one of C. Long, Dorsey or Ellis.
Ryan was way too INT-prone in college, and except the injury history, isn’t all that different from our own Brodie Croyle.
Strong arm, makes a lot of mistakes and dumb throws, and not always the most accurate QB in the world.
Can't see that Happening
Unless the Rams think that Chris Long will fall to #8.

I am a little concerned about the Carl P article today on Warpaint
What if he trades down just for more picks with one of those studs still available?
I think it's Herm draft
That’s what the papers and other sites have reported.
With that said, I’m nearing gambling status about the Chiefs trading down. It’s gonna happen.

by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions
Goodell just said on NFL Net that they will look at the way things transpired
with Miami being able to negotiate with several players, then choosing and signing Long before the Draft. He wants to know if it is an unfair advantage to the first pick. Although most teams wouldn’t want the first pick for obvious reasons.
I'm calling it now
Chiefs trade down almost no matter what. Granted, they need a partner in this deal but I think that’s going to happen.
We traded away Allen for multiple picks. We’ll do the same with our #5 draft pick. It’s the team’s philosophy now.
I agree with the logic, but, damn,
I’d like to think we come out of this with at least 1 premier player and not 2nd or 3rd best.
by DThomasReigns on Apr 26, 2008 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

It depends on how far we trade back...
but I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to trading back.
We do need a lot of help at a lot of different positions, although it would be nice to come out of it with a stud.
I believe he doesn't too
That;s why we are in a catch 22. If these guys turn out to be Pro Bowlers in 3 years, and we need to re-sign them. That is if Herm is still here.
Big if
This city is used to winning. And by “used to winning” I mean hasn’t won a playoff game in 15 years.

I don't think
Herm is against keeping players that develop beyond their expectations. Maybe just the ones like Jared Allen, who was a major superstar who was somewhat disruptive to management?
by Chris Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions
So let me ask a fair question
Is Clark letting CP and Herm draft for the next Coach? Is Clark going to let a stud get away?

I have to admit..
I’ve liked almost all of them.

Some of them, namely the Denny Green ones, are only funny because of the coach, and the lines written in are stupid.
C. Long gone...
I’m not too pissed off…
Hopefully, the Falcons don’t take Dorsey.
I have, only today, become a big Dorsey fan. Plus, that would allow us some serious options to trade back…

B) Trade Down and pick up some extra picks
I prefer A, but like Chris, see B as a more likely possibility.

Trade
Hey, I’ll give you a bunch of future players so your team sucks again this year! Give me Dorsey!!!
It looks like we got Dorsey...
It’s hard to be pissed off when I have been calling for Dorsey all morning, but that trade looked awfully good.
Still, I am glad we actually took Dorsey.
WOOOHOO!
me too
i like him more than albert. albert seems like a ryan sims repeat to me… and taking a guard seems dumb anyway.
have you seen my baseball?
OMG!
I agree with the Albert=Sims comparison…
It seems like you and me are the only ones that like Williams more than Albert though…
Just glad...
that we didnt pick albert. Anybody hear about the trade the saints offered the chiefs? We should have taken that in a heartbeat, but I guess herm loves glenn! Good, so do i!
Love it...
Quick question: Wasn’t Tank Tyler #72 last season?
Who has to switch numbers, the stud #5 overall pick rookie, or the second-year veteran?
Gholston=DeMarcus Ware...
Good fit in the 3-4 as the rush OLB that rushes the passer almost every time, like Ware is, but Gholston would have flopped if we drafted him, or anyone who runs a 4-3.
Glad we didn’t take him…
Wait, everyone....
PFT speculates the Saints could pick at 10 and then make the trade with us as written before.
If Ellis or Albert is picked by the Saints, hold your Red and Gold breathe.
Please, no Albert...
All of this positive energy will quickly evaporate if we trade frickin’ Dorsey for Albert plus some picks…
Now that is how to draft
Drafting the best player available instead of reaching for a tackle. Looks like Peterson is actually listening to the coaches for once.
I may be wrong, but am pretty sure that Herm gets final say...
Or Carl does, but Herm tells him who to pick with Clark Hunt looking over the shoulder, making sure that Herm gets his way.
I don’t think that Clark Hunt, like the Chiefs’ fanbase, trusts Carl Peterson…
supposedly
peterson has no say in this draft. it’s all clark, herm, and kuharich

Saints just traded up for S. Ellis...
Guaranteed.
Saints need a DT, which is why they wanted Dorsey, but will now just accept Ellis…
Or, hopefully, this isn’t some great grand scheme involving Dorsey.
but the trade to get the Pats pick would lower the value of picks given to us.
by DThomasReigns on Apr 26, 2008 2:53 PM CDT up reply actions
He has done a pretty good job...
Better than anyone on E!SPN, that is for sure…
I don’t like his ranking of players, I disagree with them a lot, but he had been spot-on today.
He said in the pre show that all 13 KC picks would not make the team
so KC would need to do some trading to get out of the late rounds and move up some
Good deal for Ravens too...
They want a QB, so they might as well move down and take Brohm/Henne/Flacco.
Jags are trading for Harvey...
I agree with Mayock.
Do the Jags really think they are Super Bowl contenders?
+1.
Harvey to Jacksonville at 8
Rivers to Cincinnati at 9
Albert to Pats at 10
I don’t want Albert, so hopefully it goes down like that and we can take Williams at 17…
I still can't believe we got Dorsey.
We got the consensus #1 from a month ago. Even if he busts, the front office made the right move. GO CHIEFS!!!
NFLN
I wish the talking heads would stop talking when somebody’s at the podium.
And what is wrong with the NFLN audio? Too bad this isn’t a multi-billion dollar industry or anything or that would look bad….what? it is? Oh.
Bengals got screwed hard.
They needed Ellis badly, and the Saints reamed them. There isn’t a DT worth 10, unless they reach on Balmer.
They really like Rivers too..
That is who I took in the AP Mock Draft.
They have virtually no one at LB, and Rivers is wearing a Bengals hat right now…
Yea, I guess so...
We didn’t get a 4, but our 1st is 9 spots ahead of the 1st the Ravens got…
I don’t know what that says about the value we got for JA…
Who does everyone think the Pats are taking?
Albert?
Leodis?
Rodgers-Cromartie?
I bet it is Leodis, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they take Albert…
Hard to believe it would be a corner
They generally kinda throw anyone in there at corner and they do well
by Joel Thorman on Apr 26, 2008 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions
Mayock votes for Rodgers-Cromartie...
I am getting nervous now about my pick, Mayock has been on-the-money so far…
I was way wrong...
Mayo seems like a reach at #10, but the Pats know what they are doing.
They probably tried to trade down further, but there were no takers and they just took the guy they wanted…
NFLN coverage
I am surprised NFLN doesn’t have the nice sidebar stats like ESPN. On HD, they are only filling 80% of my screen.
NFLN's commentary is much better...
But ESPN’s stats and etc. is better…
Which is why I am flipping back and forth.

What does everyone think about the 10-minute picks?
I like it SOOOOO much better, we are already at pick #11 80 minutes in, as opposed to at pick #6 or 7.
Not a big surprise there...
You had to figure that Buffalo would go CB at 11, either Leodis or Rodgers-Cromartie.
Now here is where it gets interesting…
I really want Chris Williams, but would take Clady and Otah as well, I guess…
It sure looks like we will get one of those three, with only five picks until we pick again…
Good, the Donks took Clady...
He has the highest bust potential of the tackles, IMO, after Albert.
Hopefully the Panthers opt for someone besides a tackle, so then Williams will slide to us…
"Dorsey crushes Cutler! Ohhh, what a play!"
I’m so damn happy right now. Chiefs Gods, please extend our fortune over this draft.
Wow, how did Mayock know that?
I have heard absolutely nothing about Stewart going to Carolina, how did Mayock call it?
Wow…
Good for us, too.
Hopefully the Bears take Otah, then Detroit take Albert/Mendenhall and we can pick up Chris Williams.
That would be absolutely awesome…
I usually have no idea what I'm talking about, but
(and I still don’t know what I’m talking about) what if we take Rodgers-Cromartie at 17 then take 2 OT’s in the second by trading up? I have this sinking feeling we go CB. It is not strong, but it keeps popping into my head
by DThomasReigns on Apr 26, 2008 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions
that would prevent us from grabbing...
one of these quarterbacks in the 2nd round. but who knows….no quarterback may be available of any quality.
It wouldn't piss me off...
But my ‘dream’ plan right now is to take Williams at 17 and Talib at 35.
Then continue working on the O-Line in the third round tomorrow morning.
Your idea wouldn’t piss me off, but isn’t desirable IMO…
i just hope
that these kids get signed in time for training camp so they can get whipped into shape.
have you seen my baseball?

crap...
That sucks.
Now, I don’t know who to take.
I’m not high on Otah, not high on Albert (although I would be much more willing to gamble on him becoming a LT at 17 as opposed to 5) and I think 17 is too high to spend on a corner.
I vote for moving down in the draft…
McShay
As Otah really high on his board (If I remember correctly it was like 13th)

We shouldn't of had to give up too much to just move up 2 slots...
Like what, a 5th or 6th round pick?
And now, I actually want Albert. Again, a much safer gamble now than earlier on…
Albert
solid pick. you can put him at LT and move McIntosh back to guard and the line is looking better already
According to ESPN
WE STILL HAVE THE #17TH PICK!

WHAT!?!?!?
It is just a minor thing, because I am loving the two picks we have made so far, but NFLN said we gave up a 3 AND a 5.
YUCK!
We should have only had to give up a 5, not a 3 + a 5.
That sucks.
Oh, NFLN just said that we got a 3rd back too.
So that makes it much better…
So, basically, we just moved back a little in the 3rd round and gave up a 5th, which is equal to 100 points.
So, fair deal..
Ok
Swapped 1st rounders and 3rd rounders and gave up a 5

Trade
IIRC, the Chiefs got the 15th pick. The Lions got the 17th pick, a 3rd rounder and a 5th. That’s too much.
not a bad trade at all
1srt, 3rd, and 5th, for a 1st and 3rd
I will still reserve the right to make fun of Hermisms

I'm up for that too. But, I would rather see
a trade up with a 3rd and another pick to grab Cason/Flowers and then use our true 2nd on Sam Baker

I have to say...
I’m extremely pleased with how this is turning out. I was praying over a glass of root beer that the Chiefs wouldn’t bone the Glenn Dorsey selection and now with Brandon Albert, we’ve got two players that Mike Mayock ranked in the top 10. Could this have gone much better for the Chiefs so far?
Who
Do we go for next?

A corner...
We either wait for one of Talib or Jenkins or Flowers at 35, or we try and trade up to the late 20s and pick whoever we like the most.
LMAO

I just looked at the point chart for the third round
and we could trade our two later third round picks to Arizona or Philadelphia for their second round pick, maybe throw a seven in for cream on the top
Would give us #35 and #49 or 50
Agreed, Lanier, I think we trade up for a CB and take OT with our true 2nd
by DThomasReigns on Apr 26, 2008 4:09 PM CDT up reply actions
So am I...
Just looking at it value-wise, IMO, we could get one of the top-cluster corners at 35 (Flowers/Talib/Cason/Jenkings) and pick up a lesser OT later on, like Anthony Collins, for example.
Glenn "Freaking" Dorsey and Branden "Sit the F*ck Down" Albert, are you kidding me?
I should just turn off the TV right now. CHIEFS!
A good one.
I was just gonna ask who Carolina is looking for, but that makes sense.
Either him or Otah…
Otah it is

With our picks and what has been talked about here the last two months
I think one of us is actually Herm Edwards….Ok who is it?
"Well, you know, these things happen.
That’s what makes football great…”
But seriously, it isn’t me…
Would it take too much

by rockiesfan4ever on Apr 26, 2008 4:14 PM CDT reply actions
Not really...
We are at 35 right now, so to move up from there to a mid 20s would probably only cost a 3.
I would rather just sit at 35 unless we REALLY want someone, but it is certainly possible we move up.
Ok

I am hedging the old draft chart and the "supposed" new draft chart + time constraints.
And I am not a GM, so, my opinion means crap compared to what the Panthers just gave up.

Yea
but I doubt we’d want to give up all 3. Could we do it with 1 3rd?
