UPDATED: Uncorroborated info from the Vikings Board about Jared Allen

From the diaries. -Chris

There are a couple people posting on the Vikings Scout board who "claim" to have some inside info.

One claims to be an associate of Jareds in Arizona where he is training and the other says he has a friend that is an NFL agent in Candada (wtf?) that has heard the same thing.

If they are correct, this is where the situation currently is at as of Saturday afternoon:

Before the Vikings talked with Jared, they had a tentative agreement with the Chiefs that they would want a 1st & 3rd for compensation.

Jared and the Vikings have essentially agreed in principal to the terms of his contract (they didn't know the money amount, but claim it is for 6 years with an option for more).  But when they called Peterson to inform him, he raised the price the Chiefs are wanting in compensation to a 1st & 2nd.

Don't know if there is any truth to this, so take it with a grain of salt, but it sounds like a Carl Peterson move for sure.

If Carl follows standard operating procedure, he'll continue to squeeze them until they call it off and then call them right before Minnesotas 1st round pick and see if they will do it for the original amount.  In part I don't blame him since we don't really want to lose Jared so we should get what we can out of him, but I don't know whats going to happen with Jared if this deal gets called off because of Petersons BS when they thought they had a deal done.

*******************UPDATE***********************

The latest news from klg1, one of the moderators on the Warpaint Illustrated board is that Clark Hunt has taken over the negotiations and is going to make Jared an offer to stay with the Chiefs. If Jared insists on being traded, the rumor is Clark is going to demand a 1st & 2nd this year and a 2nd next year as well. Again, this is all rumor, but WI seems to have a source inside the Chiefs organization.

Players he has done this to, but they chose not to go public. Carls concern is filling the stands not winning!

Carl Peterson
is a bonafide husler. Bottom line. I don't care if you like him or not, the guy is about as big of a hustler there is. Sometimes it doesn't work out, but i would much rather be the hustler as opposed to the huslted. I bet carl squeeks some sort of bonus out of the vikings that we wouldn't have gotten in the first place. It's easy for us to critisize our GM, but I don't see any of us getting a call from mr Hunt in regards to running the franchise, so things must be alright.

by Ben S on Apr 19, 2008 9:12 PM CDT reply actions

I forgot to say.
If this is true, then I am loving it. Carl is basically saying, I don't care if you don't want to give me what I want for him. Whats the worse that could happen? You either give us 2 1st rounders, or we play next year with the best DE in the game right now. Shit happens vikings, deal with it. What? You'll just sign him next year? That will work out real well if you can sign him before I franchise him again, possibly sign him to a long term deal if I feel like it. Then where are we? Right back in the same boat we are now.

The chiefs can afford to pay allen under the tag (something they would obviously rather avoid, but possible). What people seem to forget here is that the chiefs have the situation by the balls. What's that? You don't think a first and a second is fair? Thats too bad. I guess we are stuck with JA for another year... Its too bad we didn't rush into this and get him for less than we feel he is worth. Quick little fact, a pass rushing DE is one of the most important positions on the feild, and is the hardest position to fill through the drfat. Don't believe me? Look to see if reggie bust, oops I mean bush, is on their team. Some of it was contract issues, but for the most part, the texans wanted to draft the player who will make a bigger impact, which they did.

Couldn't agree more
I'm fairly happy with this news. I honestly wouldn't give away this amazing player in less we we're getting a 1st round, and a 2nd rounder.

Its sort of ridiculous that we as an organization are entertaining this however I understand their are a lot of gaps we need to fill. And having two 1st round picks, and two 2nd round picks would be huge. If this deal goes down we would have like 13 draft picks or something like that. Way more than anyone else.

You know Ben I couldn't agree more with your assessment of Carl Peterson. Everyone gives him shit however he is responsible for the chiefs being competitive since 89. Yes he has made mistakes but I think the chiefs are getting ready to trully get young and rebuild so that two years from now this team will become a power house for the next decade or so.  This draft will be a huge for us.

by mikey159 on Apr 19, 2008 9:30 PM CDT reply actions

Sorry DJ...can not agree....
In this case if all we get is a first and a third what is the purpose of doing a trade? We have to use our first to pick a replacement to Allen and then all we get is our new pick at 17 and a third round pick.  It does not make sense...sound like your dislike of Peterson is influencing your ablity to be objective.

by writer on Apr 19, 2008 10:12 PM CDT reply actions

What are you disagreeing about?
I was just relating what I was told.  I'd prefer we not trade him at all.

The chiefs have all the leverage in this situation because we don't want to trade him.  If they give us an offer we can't refuse and the deal can't get done, then fine, if not, then we'll keep him and hope he comes around.

I still hold out hope that Clark Hunt is going to call him in and bypass Peterson to get him signed with the Chiefs.

Suprised, But satisfied....
Way to go Carl. Don't give someone like that away. But what makes this even better is that Clark Hunt is supposedly stepping in and taking Carls place. This is what makes me happy. It sounds like Clark, unlike his father, really and truly cares about the future of this football team. And doesn't plan to mess around.

Clark and Lamar
The thing is, the Chiefs were Lamars invention and as such he cares about it, but had no problem with messing with it either.

Clark grew up a Chiefs fan like most of us.  I think he is going to be a hands off owner, but I think he isn't going to let it fall to pieces either.

If this is true
about Clark stepping in, I believe it is good news for the team. How many times could Lamar stopped Carl from doing something ignorant, but was too trusting of to step in? Now if he turns into Al Davis we have issues. Good job DJ!(AS USUAL)

Thanks, DJ
Now that he has gotten to the very tip of leaving I definitely realize I want him back for sure now, regardless of compensation being offered.

If The Trade Offer Report Is Accurate...
...that's a great move by Peterson.  I was cringing when I heard 1st & 3rd rounder for Allen because that's absolutely too low based on what we get if we don't even waste time with a trade agreement and they sign him.  Best of all, if the Vikings make an offer that Allen accepts and it's market-value and they gave us a low-ball trade offer, Peterson can just renege, match it and say "screw it, he's our player now".  He reneged on a trade to Denver already.  You think a guy who's gone in two years cares about screwing over a bunch of guys he's never going to have to deal with once he retires?

And I like it if Clark Hunt is taking over contract negotiations with Jared Allen.  Maybe that will get rid of some of the personal problems between Allen and Peterson, and I'd love to see Allen in a Chiefs uniform next year.

As critical as I am of the Chiefs lately, I've got to say that I think they've handled the Jared Allen situation very well this offseason.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Apr 20, 2008 11:58 AM CDT reply actions

...so far.
My final verdict on how they're doing with Jared Allen will, of course, be dependent on how it finishes.

Nice work DJ
Looks like this trade isn't as imminent as it seemed on Friday.

by Chris Thorman on Apr 20, 2008 1:20 PM CDT reply actions

This Clark Hunt stuff is inaccurate
Just to clear things up, someone got their wires crossed on this "Clark Hunt has taken over negotiations" thing.

Kenny (klg61) did not report anything. He voiced an opinion about the Jared Allen situation, nothing more. Apparently someone here at the AP blog (which we love, BTW) mistook it as fact.

Just wanted to clear that up. I've talked to Kenny and verified all of this.

I don't know anything about the Vikings board stuff, however. That may be true. Keep up the good work, AP!

Warpaint Illustrated features this
It is their feature article reporting the exact same thing.  Clarck Hunt has taken over the negotiations, as far as the best reporting we have.

In fact, it is the title:
http://kan.scout.com/2/747951.html

by DThomasReigns on Apr 20, 2008 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

You're misinterpreting the article
It's mostly opinion. There's nothing in there that states Clark has taken over the negotiations, either. Just that he's involved to some degree.

by GoChiefs81 on Apr 20, 2008 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

Umm, the title of the article is just that
I agree the article doesn't meet the proof of statement, but for Nick Athan to state that, there is probably something to it.

by DThomasReigns on Apr 20, 2008 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Sure
Clark is definitely involved in this. He's the owner.

But the statement "Clark Hunt has taken over the negotiations," has no basis in any report. I just wanted to clear that up.

We didn't report that. If someone else did, run with it.

by GoChiefs81 on Apr 20, 2008 9:07 PM CDT reply actions

Let me explain DJ....
I was refering to your comment about Peterson's BS and because of it we may not get the deal done....

well first of all Trading Allen for a first and third is not any big deal and not a deal I would do....because we would have to use our first pick on someone to replace Allen with and so we really net very little (a third) to have someone who is the anchor of our defensive line. It does not seem like it is enough and I am glad cooler heads prevaled. To take that deal seems to be trading a sure thing for a third round draft pick and and chancy first round draft pick. So this was not Peterson's BS, but rather it is sound thinking.

So you are right you did report what you heard but you also commented on what you heard. So I was responding to your comment. I am not a Peterson apologist and wish they had got rid of him with our new offensive coordinator...but they did not. So we might as well use his ability to drive a hard bargain to our advantage and to just net a third round pick for Allen who is a sure thing is too risky....

Question from a Viking fan

For the sake of my question, I will presume the following is true (I think it is, but not absolutely sure).

Most of us know that a week in politics is a lifetime. I think a week before the NFL draft is an eternity.

Since JA is a non-exclusive Franchise Player, IF the Chiefs do not match an offer sheet, they recieve 2 #1 picks. Suppose the Vikings and JA were to sign an offer sheet on next Monday April 28th. That would make compensation a Viking 1st in 2009 and 2010.

Now finally to my question. Is a 1st and 3rd in 2008 more valuable than a 1st in 2009 and a 1st in 2010?

Regards,

I don't suffer from insanity...I relish every moment of it!

by the Dragon on Apr 21, 2008 12:46 PM CDT reply actions

No.

Don’t buy into what people are telling you around here. Just because a first rounder is in five years, it is still the same first rounder. The only reason why it might not be as valuable is if a team has the “win now” mentality, adn to a certain degree, all teams do. However, the chiefs are not (atleast they shouldn’t be) a “win now” team, making any draft pick we get in the next 3-5 years just as valuable as a pick in this years draft.

So, for the franchise who is in a rush to win, a first and a third in 08 is more valuable, but to a smart franchise looking to rebuiild their team, the first rounders are obviously more valuable.
