Tampa Newspaper Says Jared Allen Trade "A Long Way From Done"

From Bucs Beat, the Buccaneers blog on the St. Petersburg Times web site.

We got word from a very reliable source late Thursday afternoon that this deal was a long way from done with either the Vikings or Bucs. But things can change quickly when it comes to negotiations.
From a Chiefs' fan perspective, the news is still grim. It appears Allen is leaving, whether for Minnesota or Tampa Bay.

I'm off for a bit but I'll be keeping a close eye on the news tonight and this weekend.

Enjoy your Friday.

Don't know how reliable Vikings info
is coming from a Bucs site. Still signs are pointing to it getting done before the weekend is up.

No kidding
Shouldn't they be saying the deal won't get done no matter what...

Vikings strategy: stall
There is mounting chatter in the Twin Cities that the Vikings might wait until after the draft to make their official offer for JA.

http://www.dailynorseman.com/

Assuming he Chiefs don't match the offer, this would mean the Chiefs would get two first round picks: one in 2009 and the other in 2010.  I truly hope that it doesn't go down like this, as: (1) we need help now; (2) this is a great draft class; and (3) the Vikings first round picks in 2009 and 2010 will likely be lower than the 17th overall -- especially with the defensive line they will have assembled.

The article also references a "poison pill" which I don't actually understand.  Can anyone provide some guidance on this point?

Poison pill is something like
if they play more then 3 games in Missouri the entire contract is guaranteed. So if the Chiefs want to sign them they would have to pay the entire contract.  I think this is right but I may be wrong.

Basically.
Poison pills are all-around not very good for ur. Usually, they don't matter all that much because they aren't often completed, but when they are it isn't good for the team in our position. Lets hope they don't pull any of that with us.

Minnesota
If they're waiting until after the draft, I'm betting that Tampa Bay will make the Jared Allen chase a lot more interesting (he visits there on Monday last I heard).  If they give us the blowoff, Peterson should start negotiating with them immediately...a 2008 and 2010 first-rounder would be nice (with a lower draft pick maybe tossed in).  I think that would probably stoke Tampa Bay's interest, considering that the default scenario would be the 2008 and 2009 first rounders and no team wants to lose their first rounder two years in a row.

If Peterson's not working the phones right now trying to play Tampa and Minnesota off against one another, he should be fired immediately.  And if Tampa backs out and Minnesota waits until after the draft, I say screw any trade offer with the Vikings and match any reasonable offer they give Allen (or take their first-rounders if it's a crazy deal).  We're still in good shape here.

Also, if it turns out that Allen was only playing the good boy in a contract year, Minnesota signing him could be the worst thing to happen to that team since they traded for Herschel Walker.  And those 2010 and 2009 draft picks we receive will likely get a lot better, because an above market-deal for Allen is going to kill the Vikings' cap room (they've got about $16 million left) and losing that player for a year would be catastrophic because they'll have to make quality roster cuts to get cap room for next year's free agents and draftees (and a quality replacement for Allen).  The Chiefs don't have to worry about that as much if we match an offer for Allen because we've got $27M in room so Allen screwing up would hurt but we could survive it without making too many draconian cuts.

Besides, I'm doubting that Peterson will be around in 2009 to screw up that draft, and there's not a chance in hell he'll be making the calls on the draft in 2010.  His life as a GM ends in less than two years (when his contract is up), even if he isn't fired.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

He won't be fired
And I agree about Tampa Bay.  They're probably thinking back to the days of their '02 Super Bowl.  Allen can make their defense pretty scary with Gaines Adams on the other side.

You're Probably Right About Peterson
I've always recognized that's more a pipe dream on my part than a realistic happening.

I stand by my position, however, that if he's not trying to whip up the competition between Tampa and Minnesota to score us draft picks this year, it proves that Peterson has completely lost his marbles.  If you're losing your top player to another team and you're not getting compensation for that for a year, you have no business whatsoever sitting in a GM's chair.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

These talks have been going on for months
We are just now hearing about them because they are getting close on a deal, but the Chiefs and Allen have been talking to several teams for several months.

I'm sure they have talked to just about everyone that will listen.
