Vikings strategy: stall
Assuming he Chiefs don't match the offer, this would mean the Chiefs would get two first round picks: one in 2009 and the other in 2010. I truly hope that it doesn't go down like this, as: (1) we need help now; (2) this is a great draft class; and (3) the Vikings first round picks in 2009 and 2010 will likely be lower than the 17th overall -- especially with the defensive line they will have assembled.
The article also references a "poison pill" which I don't actually understand. Can anyone provide some guidance on this point?

Minnesota
If Peterson's not working the phones right now trying to play Tampa and Minnesota off against one another, he should be fired immediately. And if Tampa backs out and Minnesota waits until after the draft, I say screw any trade offer with the Vikings and match any reasonable offer they give Allen (or take their first-rounders if it's a crazy deal). We're still in good shape here.
Also, if it turns out that Allen was only playing the good boy in a contract year, Minnesota signing him could be the worst thing to happen to that team since they traded for Herschel Walker. And those 2010 and 2009 draft picks we receive will likely get a lot better, because an above market-deal for Allen is going to kill the Vikings' cap room (they've got about $16 million left) and losing that player for a year would be catastrophic because they'll have to make quality roster cuts to get cap room for next year's free agents and draftees (and a quality replacement for Allen). The Chiefs don't have to worry about that as much if we match an offer for Allen because we've got $27M in room so Allen screwing up would hurt but we could survive it without making too many draconian cuts.
Besides, I'm doubting that Peterson will be around in 2009 to screw up that draft, and there's not a chance in hell he'll be making the calls on the draft in 2010. His life as a GM ends in less than two years (when his contract is up), even if he isn't fired.

You're Probably Right About Peterson
I stand by my position, however, that if he's not trying to whip up the competition between Tampa and Minnesota to score us draft picks this year, it proves that Peterson has completely lost his marbles. If you're losing your top player to another team and you're not getting compensation for that for a year, you have no business whatsoever sitting in a GM's chair.
