Morning Update (Beer Money Edition)

Breaking news: Brett Favre will retire. Use the diary I put up for discussion.

  • Warrick Dunn was released by the Falcons, making way for the Michael Turner era. I'll always remember Warrick Dunn for being friggin' awesome in NFL 2K1 for Dreamcast.

  • Randy Moss re-signed with the Patriots. It's a three-year deal worth $15 million in guarantees.

  • Former Chief Sammy Knight is now a New York Giant. The Giants may also be interested in Trent Green as a back up for Eli Manning.

  • Speaking of Trent Green, he visited the Saints yesterday.

  • Apparently four teams have "stepped up their efforts" to sign Boomer Grigsby, Nick Athan of WPI reports. Wouldn't it be hilarious if Boomer was just making that up to make himself feel better? Sounds like this excuse -- My girlfriend would have come to the prom but she's lives in a different country so she won't be coming. Nick also has some other good tidbits of info too so make sure you check it out.

  • Ryan Clady looked good in his pre-draft workout yesterday in Boise, ID. Clady missed most of the NFL Combine with a muscle pull.

  • Forgot to mention this other piece of info from WPI over the weekend -- The Chiefs are interested in signing one veteran receiver before the NFL draft and the Chiefs are among eight teams interested in wide receivers Bryant Johnson and DJ Hackett.

  • Bill Parcells apparently contacted the BC head coach and asked for tape of every single one of QB Matt Ryan's college pass attempts. Just give me anything at this point to make me believe Jake Long is still going to be around.

  • Free agent OG Jacob Bell signs with the Rams.

  • Late addition: This YouTube user seems to be uploading the classic MNF game from 1994 between the Broncos and Chiefs in ten minute segments. Have fun.
I noticed more than a few Chiefs fans on various sites getting worked up about this Herm comment -- "We might have champagne tastes but we have beer money." That comment has inevitably led to a lot of bitching about the Chiefs during free agency.

Like the "Arena football" comment about scoring points, fans need to understand that Herm is making a good point. It's just that he has an odd way of saying it. For example, read the rest of the beer money quote -- "We’re only going to spend a certain amount in free agency, which is a wise thing to do. You’re not going to handicap yourself (in future seasons). You don’t do that. We want to build this thing through the draft. We’re not going to live in free agency." Is that so crazy? And since when do we take everything a coach says before the draft and free agency so seriously?

I knew immediately what Herm meant when he talked about Arena football -- "Twenty-one points – that’s a lot of points. Thirty points? That isn’t even a football game. That’s Arena Football. We’re talking about real football." What he meant is that you don't need to score a lot of points if you play good defense and control the ball. Did he literally mean that he does not want to score points? Of course not.

So let's keep this in mind when we complain about Herm Edwards. Get to the point of what he's saying and don't be so myopic when he makes an odd statement. What makes Herm Edwards fun to have as a coach and to blog about is that he does say interesting things from time to time.

You don't want the Hermisms to stop, do you?

Right.
No long term bad contracts.

That's why we're spending the gross national product of France on the malcontent.

I'm just saying.

I'm glad we're not going out and signing the best free agent defensive lineman available. We've been terrible at that. And I think DJ Hackett would be a great bargain piece and a solid receiver that we need.

But it's a little ridiculous to talk about managing money and then hand out a cap crippling contract, don't you think? We have champagne money. It's just invested in one barrel.

Not criticising Herm Edwards for anything since December '07.

Also
I gotta say it, I'll feel sick if I don't. I'll get hammered by the Rebuilding Patrol, and that's fine.

I have a terrible feeling about Jake Long. It's not based on anything rational, I don't have any logical reasons for it (okay, I have some, but not enough to explain it). I just feel like it's going to be a disaster. And everyone's "Ooh, ooh, I hope we get the zone blocking guy from Michigan in a talent loaded draft!" is making that feeling all the worse. This draft is going to make me physically ill, I have a feeling.

I feel the exact same way
and from the recent mock drafts I've seen, most of them have Jake Long going before our pick, so maybe that will put you a little more at easy MAWK.

I've got a feeling
Herm is not the kind of guy that falls in love with a player and just HAS to have him.

My gut tells me that even if J. Long, Glen Dorsey and Darren McFadden all three are there for the taking at #5, if someone offers a good enough deal that gives several picks, Herm will take the picks.

Long is a beast and looks like he'll be a good player, but will he be significantly better than the other 6 or 7 OTs that can be had in the first two or three rounds?  That's a tough call.

I'm happy I got to go to the Packer game
last season, I got to see one of Favre's last comebacks ever.  I'm keeping those ticket stubs, maybe I can get him to sign them down the road.

Prediction
Favre is going to be one of those guys who completely falls apart without football.

Bring on...
the pain killers.

And where did Favre do his rehab
for vicodin addiction? Topeka, KS, of course!

Chris
no offense, and believe me, I'm a big fan of ripping anyone and everyone, but couldn't we wait like, a day to start tossing out the pain killer jokes? I mean, say what you want, but Brett Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, and, let's be honest, a better quarterback than the Chiefs have ever had (sorry, Len. I love you!).  Just would like to see us honor the guy a little bit, even if he's overloved and has pulled the retirement question out way too long.

True
I suppose I'm still bitter since it was Favre who sent the Chiefs on their nine game skid.

Be mad at AJ Hawk for breaking
LJ's foot then, I have no hate for Brett.  He is in my top 3 fav players of all time.
  1. DT
  2. Barry Sanders
  3. Brett Favre

Fuck Favre
The washed up pill popper was been holding Aaron Rodgers back for far too long.  I'm glad he went out by throwing an INT in overtime of the NFC championship.
