Chiefs Are Showing Their Interest in Matt Ryan

This has to be a ploy.

Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson, Panthers general manager Marty Hurney and Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman are a few of the top NFL officials in attendance today for Boston College's Pro Day.

The Chiefs, who pick fifth, have sent the largest NFL contingent, a group that also includes offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

That leads to an interesting thought to ponder: Would Kansas City, which seemingly has its quarterback of the future in Brodie Croyle, consider selecting Matt Ryan at No. 5?

In all, 23 teams are scheduled to have NFL officials in attendance.

Give me the first word that comes to your mind when you think about the Chiefs drafting Matt Ryan.

Hard to
understand - why send all of the major reps from the team if it was a smoke screen (sorry more than a word)

Smokescreen?
Sounds to me like they're really trying to sell the idea that they're interested in Ryan.

Either that or they are so concerned about Croyle being injury prone that they feel obligated to take a look at him.  Either way, Croyle will get his chance.

Yes a smoke screen...
to other teams with the thought that a front will make people think they are going for Ryan and then move towards another prospect.  I just find it hard to believe.

I think...
that we are over analyzing things. What the Chiefs are doing right now is making the most important move of their franchise, selecting a quarterback of the future. They need to make sure that they are making the right choice between brodie and someone else, and what better way than to watch other quarterbacks in the draft practice. How stupid would we all feel if Matt Ryan, or some other QB for that matter, went on to be a top 5 QB and we missed out on him because we were too stubborn to watch his pro day. Personally, I am glad that we are doing this, even though I am a big brodie guy, juts my prospective.

One Word?
Yes!

The big concern everyone has with drafting a quarterback is the fear he'll bust.  This way, the worst case scenario, we have a solid backup for Brodie, can dump Huard's contract, and have an open competition at camp.  I have no issue with this, considering all the tangibles Ryan brings, and the open questions we have for Croyle.  I'm a Croyle supporter but I like backup plans for QB with the #5  pick a lot better than rolling the dice and praying Jake freaking Long falls to us.

Not criticising Herm Edwards for anything since December '07.

one word?
Vomit.  Puke would work too.  I'm assuming your thinking is that Ryan would eventually take over the starting job.. if not I don't really see us paying top 5-pick money for a backup quarterback.  I am not casting Brodie aside until he has a full season behind a slightly improved O-line.  It's a rare occurrance when a young QB can come in and immediately lead a team without any pieces to several victories.  Obviously, this didn't happen with us last year, but it would be a complete joke to draft a QB in the top 5 of this draft, pay him tons of money if only to backup Croyle or give him some "competition".  If we're drafting a QB it'll be later on in the draft.  We have glaring needs to address and QB is not one of them.  My main assumption is that we're trying to scare a team like Baltimore into trading up to get Ryan, who they desperately covet.  Rant over.

wait one more thing
we may also be there to scout Gosder Cherilus, who could be around at the beginning of round 2.  just a thought...

I really have to
agree because of the money thing.

by Lanier63 on Mar 18, 2008 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think
most people have a problem with getting another young QB to have in the pipeline in case Croyle doesn't make it.

I think the problem is that Ryan is NOT a top tier QB and the only reason he's rated as high as he is is because its a poor QB draft.  The problem is that picking Ryan at #5 would be the worst reach imaginable.  Might as well trade the #5 for a second rounder straight up.

by DJ on Mar 18, 2008 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You never know
It's a win win situation with them being there. One the have leverage for trade talks with any teams interested in taking Ryan on draft day and two it doesn't hurt to check him out just in case he is just what the Chiefs need. You know just in case he ends up being the next Troy Aikmen or someone.

Not a smoke screen.

This is a huge, huge business decision.  QB is the most important and highest paid position.  I HOPE we are taking every potential player seriously.

What if there was a situation where the guys we are thinking about taking at 5 are gone?  Luckily, we are taking a look at him.  I would be extremely disappointed and worried if we weren't.

Primetime
makes a great point. You realize that most of the boards have us either taking Long if he's available, and if he's not, "accepting" Clady? Is that what you'd rather have? Second best? You'd rather have the supposed second-best tackle in a WEAK offensive line draft than the #1 Quarterback?  And money issues? We cut half the damn roster!  Again, you slice Huard off the cap and you've got a lot more room.

Herm's Philosophy
The Chiefs now claim that they stick to their own draft board and take the best player available - it appears that for the past two drafts they have done that...I can almost guarantee that we won't take Clady in Round 1, as he won't be the best player left at #5.  I actually wouldn't be surprised if Jake Long fell to us and we drafted somebody else.  These guys have been watching these college players for years, sometimes all the way since high school, and they know way more about them than the we or the "experts" do.  Jake Long may be great and he may not; but the point is that if Herm, Carl, and Kuharich think that Ryan, Gholston, Ellis, etc. is a better player, they will draft that guy.

by PVChiefsfan on Mar 18, 2008 3:29 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just because
Just because the "experts" think Ryan will go in the top 10 (or top 5) because teams need QBs and he's the best prospect does NOT mean the Chiefs will have him rated that high on their board.

I've said it before, Ryan is only ranked as high as he is because it is a poor QB class.  If he was that good a QB, the Dolphins would take him #1 overall and we wouldn't be even considering he would still be around at #5.

by DJ on Mar 18, 2008 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

luckily
the mock draft boards are not drafting for us.  if we're not trading the pick, don't worry, we're not drafting clady.  as little faith as you've presented in the chiefs management, I don't think we have to worry about picking some second tier offensive lineman with our first pick just because it's our biggest/glaring need.  i believe we're trading the pick.  this draft is far weaker in terms of quarterbacks than offensive lineman.  i'm pretty much convinced we're going to try our damnedest to unload this pick on a team that covets matt ryan.  who knows, we may draft a QB in an early rounds to give our young QB some competition, but I wouldn't worry.  a year or so from now when croyle has proved himself and matt ryan is blackledging the fuck out of the ravens we can all rest easy as MAWK vehemently denies ever having advocated the drafting of matt ryan by the chiefsl

1 word???
Ugh.

C'mon Chris.  How can I express my frustration with these theatrics in just one word.

After the virtual handjob that Brodie just got in the Star (which really should be renamed One Arrowhead Dr.), are we really supposed to believe that our team has a serious interest in Matt Ryan?

I think one must ask 2 serious questions-

1) Who are the Celtics playing that night and just how good are Herm's seats?

and

2) Who besides Baltimore needs/wants a QB bad enough to trade us their 1st this year and at least their 2nd next year for Matt Ryan?

Don't fall for the hype.

MV

P.S.- Shouldn't we be focused on more pressing issues such as- Will JA show up for the "voluntary" conditioning program which starts Monday?

Why the hell not?
Yes!

If Ellis and Jake Long are gone, and they probably will be, draft Ryan and go with a tackle in round two. This is only the deepest lass of OTs ever.

All good reads above however
I would like to see the money comparison for 1st round QB draft picks in the top 5 and the rest of the positions.  I just cannot see Clark, wanting to spend his fortune on Ryan, when we may get a few more good toilets and sinks at One Arrowhead.  Seriously, I wonder if there is such a chart or comparison?

Cherilus
the guy they were really there to see

Cleveland Browns?
They just went through this last year, they had a good QB on their roster. Hell if they want to give up a no.5 pick for a QB and trade to Cleveland and get Brady Quinn. Really at this point with the line we have what does it matter who the QB is if he is flat on his ass? Surely they were there to see Cherilus. If Brodie has no talent we will have a high pick next year.

by Eric on Mar 18, 2008 6:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Good QB on their roster?
You mean Derek Anderson who started 3 games the year before?  He was not viewed as a legitimate starting QB in the NFL until this year, after the Quinn draft.

He was also a 6th round pick the year before.  He was never drafted as the next starting quarterback of his team.

Although they may seem similar on the outside, there's actually a lot of differences.

The Browns had to make a choice and they did.  It just seems that its worked out for them.

Seems logical
to me if you want a QB.( Who has the strength of a linebacker)

There aren't many of you left on the site
"you" being pro-Matt Ryan and down on Croyle.

It seems as if Chris has brainwashed us to accept Croyle and LJ as starters next year no matter what.

There are a lot of decisions that come down to money.  Money is a contributing factor in this discussion.  We named Croyle the starter.  He's a 1st day draft pick.  A new quarterback has an extremely difficult time succeeding.  There are adjustments.  Croyle is the starter.

Now, watch us draft Matt Ryan and dump Croyle!

by Joel Thorman on Mar 18, 2008 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

"I" Personally am just down on Croyle.
Don't get me wrong, I am a Ryan fan. I think he will be an outstanding top tier QB somewhere else. Probably even win a ring. But not here. We won't take him. We want to stick with an incredibly wimpy, undersized, and injury prone quarterback. With mush mouth so bad you can hardly understand what he is saying. He obviously does not have the "intangables" needed to QB in this league. If so, He surely could have beaten out Huard for a job that Herm was tryinh to ram down his feeble little throat. No, we won't draft a great QB. We will stick with Brodie Crap. We are going to put all of our hopes and dreams as Chiefs fans on Brodie's "Live Arm" and lack of a decent haircut to win us another 4 games next year. Wait, lets see if he can win 1 first. 4 may be setting the bar a little high.

Tom Brady 6th round
Derek Anderson 6th round. Anderson never got a shot to show his full potential, much like Brody has not got to show his full potential. It would trully be dumb to go after a QB without addressing the O-line, is Ryan going to complete passes from his ass? My point is there will be a QB available in the late rounds, Ainge fits better with what Herm wants, a caretaker who will not make a lot of mistakes. Whats up with needing a QB so bad?

One Word
Huh? Why? Wha? Seriously? C'mon?

I've been saying it for a while, if we don't get Jake Long at 5 we should trade down KNOWING we'll prolly get less than what we deserve in return. I don't like paying anybody that much money. Hell, trade our 5 for a 2 and a 7, who cares just don't pay Clady or Ellis or Gholston or Ryan that kind of money when we don't really, really need them. We need hogs; Why draft Ryan only to have him break David Carr's single-season sack record? And if we're a run-first, throw-second team, why the hell are we spending a 5 on a friggin QB??? My rants done.

by 3rdAndLong44 on Mar 18, 2008 11:17 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Last Time I say this
When it is our turn to pick in the first round, Ryan will not be the best player available and he will not be the highest guy left on our board - whoever that is, THAT is who we will pick at #5 (unless we can't trade - I guarantee that is our first choice, we will benefit from more picks more than we would from a top 5 pick - we grabbed the best rookie WR at #23 last year)

by PVChiefsfan on Mar 19, 2008 7:20 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

sad
very sad to think anyone would believe that the chiefs would actually draft ryan at 5. we let hartwig walk out of town and have done nothing to address our depleted o line. i agree that we need a back up , but it seems everyone is forgetting about dennis dixon. yes, he had his injury that ended his heisman year but he will probably be around in the fourth and be a steal. you let brodie prove or not prove himself this year and give dixon more time to heal and learn the system.my own opinion but 09 dixon should be our starting qb.
