I
He was a great defender in his prime for other teams, it just didn't work out here and I think he knows that. He never did anything to bring shame to the Chiefs name or the team. So thanks for a few memories and good luck.

2 year plan

This explains alot
- Why the purge of players we are seeing now hadn't already happened.
- Why the Chiefs stuck with Trent Green when he came back from his concussion despite being ineffective.
- Why Damon Huard was the starting QB in 2007.
- Why they were sticking with Saunders playbook even though they had no one qualified to call it.
Makes you wonder how much different the team would look if Herm had been allowed free reign to mold the team however he liked from the very beginning.

Would have made a huge difference
You had a high powered offense with lots of veterans that knew what they were doing but no defense. So you bring in a defensive coach to get them over the hump. Quick fix to try to tie things up.
But then things started unraveling.
Willie Roaf decides to retire. Al Saunders, seeing that he wasn't a candidate for head coach in K.C. left for Washington where he thought he would have a chance after Joe Gibbs retired, Trent Green gets knocked out in the first game of the season. Second year, Will Shields retires and the O-line falls to pieces.
Vermeil knew the window had passed. I think when Herm saw how poorly Trent Green recovered from his injury, he knew it too.
It's OK, they are doing now what should have been done in the first place. Its a shame they had to go 4-12 for it to happen.
