Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Sets Assist High In Easy Win Over Sacramento

At least the seconday looks promising.

I thought the secondary played a pretty good game yesterday. They had a pick 6 and almost had about 4-5 other interceptions. These young guys all have a nose for the ball. I think the have actually played great considering how horrible the pass rush is. I think they said yesterday that we lead the league in takeaways (if that is wrong I know we are in the 2 or 3). How is that possible with 6 sacks. Usually it is pressure on the QB that forces most INT's and quite a few fumbles. I think the defense has the potential to really take away the football if we get a pass rush.

We need to find a pass rushing DE, and a couple LB next year and the Defense will be okay. Page and Pollard miss alot of tackles for big gains, but part of that is the linebackers totaly wiff and the safety has to try and make the tackle on the RB in the open field with a 10 yard head of steam. That is not an easy task. I still think it will come together for Dorsey. DT always struggle as rookies. Tank and boone are adequate. Mcbride and Hali can fight for the other DE job. The last think I think needed is a new Defensive Coordinator. I kind of like Gunther but it is time for a change.

I must say, if you told me week 1 that by the end of the year the defense would be holding back the offense from winning games, I don't think I would have belived you.

100% agree

A pass rushing DE and two really good LBs, a good coverage type/ run stopper and a good pass rushing/ run stopper would take our defense from last or near the bottom to top 10 instantly. Our secondary is amazing imo, w/ no pressure. If we still had or get a pass rusher the likes of Jared Allen and the qb didnt have all day in the pocket we’d have a lot o more takeaways and Dorsey would be making a bigger impact.

Question has DeJuan Morgan been getting any playing time? I know we drafted him in the 3rd round although we didnt need another safety but was just wondering why not rotate him Pollard or Page whoever is worst @ stopping the run or pass coverage.

I'd be fine with 9-7 or 10-6 and competiting for the divsion title

Morgan can lay the WOOD

I say we give him a shot, he’s much better as an alley player. In other words he knows how to get up to the line of scrimmage and fill the alley against the run. That, and he has a certain “it” when it comes to tackling. great at aiming for the lower body and wrapping the legs. You can’t always coach these things, ie Bob Sanders, its just an attitude that you’re gonna make that play.

Morgan

Has played very well in special teams. I have only seen him a few times at saftey. Before the season Edwards said that Morgan could start for the Chiefs by the end of the year, but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Remember he came out as a Junior so it is taking him longer to learn the NFL.

I think the backs are playing amazing, and they will only get better. Another amazing thing is that the front four is giving the opposing QB all day to throw so he can scan the whole field, and it is so hard to stay on a WR for that long. But all three, even Legget are doing a nice job with staying with their man and reading the Quarterbacks eyes.

Tackling

Has anybody noticed that we miss a lot of tackles because we are always trying to strip the ball. Apparently the coaching are teaching the ball on every play. That is why we get turnovers with no pass rush. Sure tackles take a bit more consentration. If you are grabbing for the ball it is hard to put pads into the ball carrier. I like what Gunther is teaching, but there has to be a happy medium. I agree Gun has to move on.

Agreed

We do miss a lot of tackles for this reason. The first guy needs to wrap up (that means you too Pollard) and the second guy goes for the strip. Another root of this problem is sometimes we just decide as a defense not to gang tackle. Part of tackling is getting 11 hats around the ball. Marty would have stroked out by now if he was coaching these guys.

i have to say though

Pollard doesn’t take any plays off. When he is out there he is playing his ass off. 9/10 times it is him saving the day on someone else’s missed assignment. heck if we could get some linebacker play i think pollard would be a superstar. The man hits like a freight train. While i do see him going for the ball over wrapping up on occasion I like what i am seeing from him. Between him and our young corners our secondary looks good. We are what, 3rd in the league in takeaways or something? Can you imagine if we could actually get a pass rush and pressure the QB? or if we ould get our LB’s to stop pawning their assingments off on the safety? I am hopefull that we will pick up a premier pass rusher in the draft. if that guy can play the defense will improve immeasurably. That and a get a veteran LB who is worth a damn please.

Agreed

Pollard is a good football player and i agree with what you’re saying about him. I do like the fact that we go for the ball, thats what our defenses under Marty LOVED doing. You’re right about the pass rush too, but i doubt we could pick up a premier pass rusher from the draft. At least i don’t see one right now, obviously there could be a sleeper somewhere but some of those 1st rounders have bust written all over them.
