The Chiefs were five yards from the end zone, and the team elected to pass on a field goal. Instead, coordinator Chan Gailey called a pass play, and when Thigpen couldn't find an open receiver, he darted toward the goal line. Denver's Dre Bly hit Thigpen on the Broncos' 1, and the Chiefs had to turn the ball over on downs.

I have to say that Thigpen's QB draw at the end of the game appeared to be by design.

I thought so too, but the post game comments by Gailey and Thigpen both said it was a pass designed to go to Tony but the pocket began collapsing before the route could be run and there was an opening so Thigpen decided to go for it.
I’m fine with him doing that. I like a guy that that is willing to take it on himself and try do what it takes rather than trying to force the play that was called. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won’t. At least it gives us a chance.
Agreed, DJ
First and foremost we should be looking for Tony but since that wasn’t there we went to the next successful play we had that game – Thigpen running.
