Per Pro Football Talk, apparently New England Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli is definitely on Clark Hunt's radar for a possible long term position within the Kansas City Chiefs organization.

PFT also mentions, via Chris Mortensen, that there are four other candidates under consideration by Hunt:

These candidates aren't any of the ones we've mentioned here but we'll make sure to deliver some info to you about each of them over the next couple of days.

As he's always said, Clark Hunt will leave the fate of Herm Edwards up to the new GM.

Savage

Phil Savage to me is the weakest of the candidates, mainly because his teams have not performed well. I think he is actually good at finding talented players and I loved his draft a couple of years ago when he needed a QB and LT and managed to get both players he wanted that year. Where he fails in my book is evaluation of coaches, he should have made a change there a couple of years ago, so that makes me a little nervous.

I Don't Want Savage

He’s a decent personnel evaluator, but in addition to the Browns’ losing record he also had a number of problems with his tenure. That whole staph infection epidemic in Cleveland, where the Browns were more obsessed with downplaying the problem than dealing with it is indicative of what I’m talking about. Same with that idiotic text fight he got into with a fan.

Savage might be a decent personnel guy, but we just got rid of one abrasive, temperamental guy who had trouble dealing with his players. Do we really want to follow him up with another?

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Not to mention the Anderson signing

The big thing I want besides professionalism and scouting accumen is a solid history of NOT handing out humongous contracts to underproductive players.

Amen!

I opened the door to see my 18-month old and, in a trembling voice said, "You will never remember what it was like to have to root for the Chiefs under Carl Peterson."

Hallelujah. Our long nightmare is over.

Hear Hear

It wasn’t as bad as some of the crap Peterson has handed out, but it certainly wasn’t a good contract.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Really excited about Savage

He has the winning track record in Cleveland we need here. What have they won, like 24 games the last four years? That is amazing!

Chris Polian

I assume is Bill’s son? Would he leave the Colts?

If we get Savage I'm punching myself in the dick

Then again Chris Mortensen is about as reliable as the safety on Plax’s pistol.

Question
As he’s always said, Clark Hunt will leave the fate of Herm Edwards up to the new GM.

I certainly remember Clark Hunt saying in the Peterson “resigned” conference that he would listen to the new GM’s input, but that ultimately HE (Hunt) would make the decision on who the head coach would be…

Am I hallucinating? (been known to happen)

by PVChiefsfan on Dec 30, 2008 12:34 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

It's possible

that Hunt’s already been told by some potentials that part of the deal would have to be a new HC.

I can't imagine a quality GM candidate not wanting his own coach

One of the most important things for GMs is their connections, their network of coaches and scouts that they can call on to work for them in their new job. Any quality GM will have his own coaching candidates in mind to bring with him.

That is one thing that concerns me a little about signing Polian as GM. I doubt he’s going to go right out and raid his dads organization of assistants and scouts. He might have good GM candidates, but will he have a network to bring with him?

by ChiefDJ on Dec 30, 2008 5:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That is an excellent point

Without those connections, we wouldn’t want them. We don’t have time for someone to start over “at the top”. We need them to hit the ground running and implement their strategy. If guys don’t have that, then they are not ready to be a GM.

If looks have anything to do with it

Savage looks like he starred in “Revenge of the Nerds”

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

hopefully it wont be

savage or decosta. nothing against decosta i dont know his profile to well but the scout tag bothers me. out of the four i would like pollian because of him being an assistant gm. but thats just my opinion

Never had a very good offense though.

What about if Tennanbaum gets run?

Is he a viablle GM for the long hall?

It’s the Jets, after all.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Dec 30, 2008 1:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Let's see

Tannenbaum threw money at a lot of aging vets this offseason and finished 9-7. Of what other GM does that remind you? I’ve had enough of those kinds of results, thanks.

Would be be in the running for Cowher if...

This is a lightly different direction but I saw a report today that says Cowher is not interested in the Jets coaching job because he wants more control over personnel decisions. This makes me wonder if we wouldn’t be in the “Cowher for Coach” hunt if we unloaded Herm Edwards now. Seems like the Chiefs would be very interesting to a Cowher with lots of young talent and some high draft picks coming up.

by Mclovin1 on Dec 30, 2008 1:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

It's not worth it

Cowher wants too much control. Our odds for success are much better if all the power does NOT reside with one individual.

Agree Completely

Management is as much a team endeavor as the games themselves are. When one person tries to take on two full time jobs (which coach and GM are) you’ll tend to get someone who’s half as productive at both.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Dec 30, 2008 1:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Listen to me: Cowher will not coach in 2009!

from Adam Schefter – Cowher is not mentally ready to take a coaching job in 2009. He’s happy with his TV gig and the freedom he has with his family life right now – (roughly Cowher’s words reported by Schefter).

I know he would be amazing, but it’s a pipe dream to think he’s coming out in ‘09 and that he’s coming here.

Sadly the only way I think we have a shot at Cowher is if we let Herm ride out the last year of his contract and then gun for Cowher in 2010. If we hire a new HC this year, there is almost no way we fire him next year and go after Cowher. So it’s suck up one more year of Herm-ball and aggressively pursue Cowher in 2010 or let it go entirely.

The only way we’re seeing Cowher in KC next year is on CBS sitting next to James, Dan, Shannon and Boomer.

He said that when he told the Browns he wasn't going to coach in 2009

Coincidentally (or not), he turned the Browns down at that time and started speaking with the Jets.

No one is ever off the market. The right price/place will get him.

by Joel Thorman on Dec 30, 2008 2:11 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

this was from what he told the Jets

Saw it on NFLN today – might have been reported yesterday (rerun this morning)

Never say Never of course… but I’m gonna be the moron on the “Cowher’s not coaching in ’09” wagon. I hope he surprises me and comes back… but I don’t like the odds of either the return to coaching and/or the return to KC in ’09.

by Ochophosphate on Dec 30, 2008 2:41 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You're right

Just posted a FanShot from Schefter. (Insert foot in mouth). Schefter is pretty reliable. I trust him, especially since he was so adamant about it.

If our games are televised…

I’m joking – I have no doubt we’ll “sell out” all the home games next year too…

I agree, Cowher

will not be coaching here in K.C. in ‘09. The Jets were the only ones that were a possibility because of his daughters being in the area. I did see something somewhere that stated that the Jets changed their tune as far as giving him so much control. They are still considering Cowher. As with everything else we’ll have to wait and see.

The List

Honestly that is not a bad list. I wonder if Polian would leave the Colts with him being heir apparent to succeed his dad. Only thing is it is he might lean to keeping Herman. That Savage would be motivated beyond belief…

by FrankPitts on Dec 30, 2008 2:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Clark will

talk to Pioli, we just don’t know when. There is some speculation I agree with that Clark can’t yet talk to the other people he is considering because they are still in the playoffs. That is one reason why it has been so quiet on the Chiefs front recently. Clark isn’t stupid and isn’t rushing in to a bad decisionor fit. I’m sure he’s gathered whom he trusts around him to advise and council him in the matter.

A pow-wow as it were, just before we go after some scalps next year!

New Gm

What about Mike Shanahan?

by Jofman on Dec 30, 2008 10:08 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Oh God No!!!

I think he’s a solid coach but his drafts in Denver were horrible…as bad as Peterson’s if not worse. High bust rate among first day players. Worst thing to happen to his career was for the Broncos to leave him in complete control of the personnel.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

Okay, lets have some fun

Bill Parcells leaves Miami, takes GM position and Shanahan as HC. How’s that? : )

STOP IT!!!! OK??? Why???

Fellow Chiefs fans. STOP IT!! Stop talking about how neat-o it would be to have Cowher come to KC. IT would suck…We gotta get out of the old way of thinking that we should always recycle. We are seeing a changing of the guard in the NFL right now!! No question Shannahan, Cowher, Schottenheimer, Vermeil were great coaches, and if they continued to only coach against each other they would remain great. But that’s old news, they have had their day. That’s why so many coaches are getting axed this year. It’s time for a change. We can’t be ahead of the game and be the team of the future if we keep trying to fix our problems by brining in recylced players and coaches. We need fresh young blood in KC. The rest of the NFL is already doing this. Are we gonna be left behind again?? Bringing in old coaches that have old ideas on coaching while other teams bring in fresh young minds with new ideas and new ways of coaching? If you want to manage the prize boxer of the future, you don’t bring Ali back after he’s 40 years old and start over. You get a new young boxer with promise and you make him great. You don’t put fresh paint on a condemned building do you? So fellow fans. STOP IT!! We don’t want Cowher or anyone else that’s been around for a long time, anyone who is part of the current regime that is on it’s way out. We want someone very young and open minded that will come in and try something new. We haven’t won a Superbowl in over 40 years now. It’s time to change our thinking as fans too. It’s time to think progressive. It’s time to think young and hungry.
