It appears that we will see Schottenheimer somewhere in 09
Adam Schefter of the NFL Network:
While football’s focus continues to shine on former Steelers coach Bill Cowher despite the fact that he will not be back on the sidelines in 2009, another proven veteran NFL head coach is ready and willing to return to the game.
Former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer is willing to coach again in the right situation surrounded by the right people, a league source said Monday. Schottenheimer already has been contacted by one team with a head coach opening, though no interview has been scheduled yet.
Any team in need of a turnaround — and that includes just about any team firing a head coach — would be well advised to look at Schottenheimer, who is 4-for-4 in turning around franchises in Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego. Schottenheimer also has built strong coaching trees around him, hiring assistant coaches such as Cowher and Herman Edwards, among others.
Schottenheimer recently underwent a physical in which the doctor praised him for his physical and mental condition. Now Schottenheimer soon could be getting checkups from NFL teams in need of a head coach.
So where will he end up?

I wonder who contacted him?
Cleveland? Detroit?
(By the way, I added the link in there at the top.)

I Keep Hearing New York
He’d get to work with his son again. And it’s a decently talented team.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

I can see that
With the exception of a 1 year stint in Washington, he’s been in pretty small markets (CLE, KC, SD). Not that that means anything but interesting.

...
Will his son be staying there now that Mangini is gone?

His Son Is A Candidate For The HC Job
So it’s likely he will stay. From what I’ve read the problem with Mangini was largely that he was a colossal asshole who had such deficient people skills that it hindered his ability to work with others. No idea if it’s true or not, but a lot of people apparently complained to the GM about him. Doesn’t appear that the Jets are really unhappy with the rest of the staff.

I just heard on ESPN (yeah, sorry)
that Cowher would listen to the Jets. Marty may have some competition.
So what was the deal with Marty talking to Clark? Now he is just going to go off and coach some other team?

I read somewhere
that Marty was in town talking with Clark about a possible consultant position like Parcels.

Yep
Remember, the day after the Peterson resignation there were rumors that Marty was seen at KCI. Those were false.
Separately, just yesterday it was reported that Marty indeed spoke/interviewed/whatever with Clark Hunt for a Parcells like role.

But I am guessing that the Chiefs role is sketchy
so if a bonafide Coaching job presents itself, Marty is not waiting around for us to decide what we are going to do? Man, the coaching/gm carousel spins fast.

Take a job when you can get it
Well, I don’t mean that really. But the Cleveland and KC jobs are pretty similar so I could see Marty going back to Cleveland pretty quick. I imagine a factor int he interview process will be the amount of power each team is willing to give the new coach/gm (whatever position Marty wants to be in).

Deja vu squared
Back to Cleveland, then onto KC, then a short stint with…

I think NY is a good place for him as well
They have a foundation of good players and would be playoff bound under Marty.

so they could lose in the playoffs?
sorry – couldn’t resist =)

The Jets or Browns
can have him and his family, I don’t want them back here in K.C. in any capacity. Some of you do remember his brother, right? (cringe)

God
imagine if the Jets get Marty in a personnel and cowher in a coaching role. And we’d have Herm Edwards. Ye Gods.

I think the Parcells type job for Marty would be a dream job
1) He would not be required to put in the 20 hour days
2) He could build the team the way he wants to (same as Carl did)
3) He would have final say so on the HC
4) He could ask for a clause similar to Parcells if he wanted an out (not necessarily an owner change type)
5) He would get the credit if we go all the way
6) His own seat in the Box
7) A salary he wouldnt get as a HC
We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Plus
he’d get to go against San Diego twice a year and stick it to his old boss – AJ Smith.
It would be kinda like when Shanahan goes vs. the Raiders and always goes out of his way to murder them to spite Al Davis.
I always liked the way Marty dug in and got the team fired up for rivalry games.

yup
rivalry games were awsome to watch when we had marty.
