Chiefs Chairman of the Board Clark Hunt held at least one interview with a potential GM candidate early this week. The person and location of the meeting is unknown, but the process of interviewing and gathering information is very definitely underway.

Oh yeah no question

Honestly I expect the new GM to be in place a couple days after their team is eliminated from the playoffs. Hopefully the new head coach within a month of that.

Agreed

I would say that who ever the GM candidates are, they already have a list of coaches.

Great

Clark is impressing me more and more.

It is a team he is looking at..

Chris, and PT have been really quiet, they are interviewing with Clark! AP will then become an official Chiefs blog!:)

Lets hope Clark lets the new GM start fresh, with his guys. Who would want a coach, who has lost twice as many as he has won in KC?

Since Thum is involved,

willl it be a hire of the good ol boy network?

I hope not either

I hope that since Clark knows the history of the team and how it has been a good ole boy thing for a while, will make him hire outside that group. Plus, a hire like that wouldn’t change much.

Yep what would be the

point of making changes if it is going to be more of the same?

I Don't Think So

Everything that’s been said about Thum indicates he’s not into the “good old boy network” type of dealings…he’s professional, goal-oriented, and pragmatic. He likely recognizes the problems with the status quo at Arrowhead for the last decade. Also, Clark Hunt recognizes those problems as well, and he doesn’t want a Peterson network hire, so it’s unlikely Thum would push for that.

Just because Thum worked with Peterson doesn’t mean he agreed with what Peterson was doing. And from the stories that have come out about him, it sounds like Thum spent more than a little time covering for Peterson’s screwups.

Clark doesn't seem to be the type

Hunt probably wouldn’t keep Thum around if he thought he would be more of the same. It is really encouraging to see the direction that Mr. Hunt is taking this team.

Agreed

He gave Peterson a decent amount of time to start showing some results and I don’t think anyone can say that two 12+ loss seasons in a row constitute enough of a positive result to keep anyone employed in the NFL. And it’s about time that Chiefs ownership started holding the people running their team accountable. Lamar Hunt may have been one of the most nicest and most decent people on earth, but I didn’t think much of him as an owner and suspect that his response to this debacle probably would have been to promote Peterson to team president and let him appoint a crony to GM so we could suffer through another 20 years of “rebuilding”. I seriously doubt he ever would have fired Carl Peterson.

This whole rebuild thing is a joke any way.

How many times do you see a team rebuild under the same leadership? Good teams don’t rebuild, they reload. Peterson was very similar to Hunt if you think about it. Hunt was loyal to Peterson to a fault. Peterson was the same with Priest Holmes and it ended up costing salary cap space and a valuable roster spot.

Bunker Mentality

I think the further he got into his tenure the more he chose to reward people he felt close to rather than to do things that would produce results if it meant going outside of his inner circle. Jon Yoon at MVN raised a valid point…when Edwards got hired, Peterson didn’t even look at any other head coach candidates (most of whom wouldn’t have cost us a draft pick). He just hired the guy he knew, despite Herm’s shaky record.

Good

Let Herm go there and screw things up.

They’re apparently extending Singletary, though, so I’m not sure if they’re going to shake things up. Buffalo might be another destination. But based on the lack of interest people have shown in Floyd Reese, who had more success than Peterson did, I seriously doubt anyone’s going to be jumping all over themselve to sign Peterson. It hasn’t gone unnoticed by the rest of the NFL that he went 15 years without a playoff win.

I was just guessing on San Francisco

It seems to be a job that he fits. I was listening to Pat Kirwin and Tim Ryan on Sirius NFL and they were speculating that Peterson isn’t done in the league. Of course they also said Herm deserves another season because it isn’t like the team is underachieving and just missed the playoffs. They thought with the young talent that this team will be good for many years. I hope they are right about the team not so much Herm.

Before Singletary Suddenly Fell Into Favor There, I Would Have Agreed

Right now, though, I think that Singletary’s going to end up calling a lot of the shots…although I’m skeptical that the team’s going to go anywhere.

Skeptical?

Past history (per you in the comments on multiple occasions) shows that a coach with a lot of power (like Nolan did) won’t be successful. I’d be more than skeptical.

San Francisco would be a pretty intriguing job from the outside looking in. Apparently, there’s a lot of issues with ownership. I’ve read a bit of SF’s awful, fairly new ownership and heard even worse reviews from a SF friend of mine.

I Was Being Diplomatic

It’s still the Christmas season, after all. :)

If I were blunt, I’m not a big fan of Singletary as a coach either and think he’s going to struggle to do even the one job he’s assigned.

Carl

I could see him going somewhere else and actually doing a good job. Hire a strong independent coach and a good scouting team and Carl is capable. We had a good ten year run with him. Then he got fat and comfortable.

by FrankPitts on Dec 27, 2008 4:16 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Requiem on a Herm

You know his run didn’t have to end like this. Coming in he didn’t have to be so conservative on offense. He could have got a playoff win if he started Huard who had the team rolling over Trent against the Colts. Jimmy Wilkerson was great that game but never got a real shot to start. He could have signed Pennington who it seems was willing to come here , a Jake Scott at OG who was on the market forever and maybe a receiver and had a 500 team this year maybe. But he s stubborn and he failed. I like Herm but a new broom and all that.

by FrankPitts on Dec 27, 2008 4:22 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't get people complaining about Herm being "stubborn"

Every coach comes to a team and has his own philosophy and way he wants to do things. Just wait and see the next coach that comes in will have their own view of things and their own schemes and they will be trying to fit the square peg players we have into their round hole system.

The mediocre record Herms first year here was not him being stubborn, it was losing the franchise QB and as decent a backup as Huard was that first year, he was not nearly as good as Trent Green the year before and Green was never the same after the concussion. Could Huard have won in the playoffs instead of Green? We’ll never know but hindsight will always tell us we would have.

Nobody ever said Herm was a great coach, but he has had a lot of labels put on him like “stubborn” that people slap on him whenever he makes a decision they don’t like. The same thing will happen with the next group of coaches that come in, just watch.

If Herm goes elsewhere and succeeds...

And the new regiem here fails, I don’t expect many people to step up. If he goes in elsewhere and fails, I do expect a lot of crowing, even if the new HC does poorly.

Especially if he’s so radically different in approach that he guts the team of our current talent, and starts over, and we have a few more poor-to-mediocre years. Or worse, he brings in a lot of overpriced FAs, and masks his failure for a season or two with another one-short “run at the SB” in year 2 or 3., then bails when the house of cards comes crumbling down.

I never have claimed that Herm’s an elite HC, but we’re far enough into the youth movement that I’d rather take another year of Herm, followed by a good fit, than a quick new HC hire who can’t use the talent pool we have.

For HC and QB: getting an upgrade would be good. Just so that we don’t end up sabotaging the Team in rolling the dice on new guys in either slot. Any replacement at either position had better be able to upgrade their positions immediately. Jam yesterday and jam tomorrow, but never jam today was Carl’s schtick, and I, for one, am sick of it.

Respectfully, that goes the same for those who dream here about how angelic the new GM/HC team “will” be. I don’t have the patience for much more “wait until next year” with a new staff, so if Herm’s out the door, then the next set had damn well be ready to hit the ground running, and show immediate results with the talent we have /now/. YMMV.

Herm’s got game-day weakensses, right enough – but he does have one quality that is pretty rare: moral courage. He didn’t take the patchwork route, covering his own ass thereby. He made the hard choice: gut out and elderly team, knowing that he’d take a hit from fans in doing so. You don’t see that every day in life, let alone in the NFL. If he’d gotten the chance to do it back in ’06, we might be havi8ng a very different discussion right now. (yeah, yeah – coulda, woulda, shoulda. Just as valid as maybe, expectedly, hopefully).

Herm's Not Going To Step Up Anywhere Else

He was a losing coach in New York, he was a losing coach here and if he gets another head coaching gig he’ll be a losing head coach there too.

So I’m not in the least bit worried about having to eat my words on Herm. And if the new regime takes this team backwards over a three year period like Herm and Carl did, I’ll criticize them too until they either produce results or the team hires someone who can.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

One team...Miami

“Rookie” HC takes over a 1-15 team and might very well take them to the playoffs. This is a prime example of a knowledgeable GM putting the right people around him. I’ve thrown out the idea of taking “years” for building and making progress after seeing how a team like Miami can make a drastic turnaround in ONE offseason.

No more excuses. Put the right GM in place and right coaching staff and ANY team can make a turnaround.

Jason Taylor wanted out of Miami. Arguably one of the best players on the team and considered a team leader. Parcell’s came in and said: “You want out?”. Let me help you pack your stuff. “you don’t want to play for Miami?, we don’t want you here”.

Positive attitude, knowledge and perseverance to overcome. It can happen.

No more band-aids and dreams of playoffs without really going for a SB appearance. That’s as lame as having sex without achieving an orgasm.

Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."

The Chiefs need to be playoff contenders in 2009 for me to consider improvement. Clark wanted it in 2008...I'll give them an additional year.

Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.

I base my "stubborn" accusation on a few things

Going back to, let’s say, the playoff game vs. Indy.
Huard finishes the season strong – Trent Green comes back for the playoff game and is named the starter – Trent comes out and sucks goat nards for pretty much the whole game. At no point does Herm even consider putting Huard in to try to give the team a spark. His decision to stick with Trent through a whole game because that was “what was right”. This is a playoff game mind you, where everything should be on the line, spare nothing. If it were a regular season game, fine.

Keeping McIntosh at RT early in the year when he was playing miserably – for the sake of cohesion on the O-line – while going against the whole philosophy of his “youth movement”. It wasn’t until the move to the spread that McIntosh started to look ok. I believe it was more due to scheme than McIntosh improving.

While not entirely his decision (I think), choosing to cut Barth at the start of the season due to his “youth an inexperience”… again while touting a so called youth movement. Ultimate stubbornness would have been never bringing him back mid-season. Perhaps this wasn’t an example of stubbornness, just poor decision making.

So I may be off on a few of these. But this is what made me call Herm stubborn. I’m sure there are others that I just can’t recall right meow.
