Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

A turnaround possibility...

As my comment on ROC's post suggests, the single biggest impact player that could be available in free agency this year is Julius Peppers.  (I'll hear the Haynesworth argument, but we need an end more)

Julius Peppers is one of the best pass-rushers in the game, and he is no slouch in the run game either.  He has played on some of the NFL's best defenses in his career, and he is just now coming into his prime (Remember he left North Carolina early and even led us to draft Ryan Sims, who coincidentally just played next to Peppers and was not a good football player).  He would at least double this team's sack total, and with a more aggressive defensive scheme could be VERY effective (I think the cover-2 will leave us when Herm leaves us...).

Further, our pass rush and defense could be greatly improved by our first draft slot, at either the end position or at linebacker.  At the first pick, I suggest we take Orakpo from Texas.  WITH Julius Peppers, we could have a NY Giants pass-rush situation, which could build LONG-TERM success.  Even without signing Peppers, Orakpo is an impact player and would be the best addition to our team.

If we sign an end before the draft or feel linebacker is a bigger need, there is one linebacker worthy of such a high pick, USC's Rey Mauluga.  He plays MLB at USC and by most accounts is a free-lancing aggressive linebacker that seeks to severely injure opponents with every tackle.  He is good in coverage and good in blitz packages.  Some have floated Ray Lewis comparisons when mentioning Mauluga, while others, including some in the Chiefs organization, feel he may be better suited at OLB.  In any event, he is the ONLY linebacker worthy of top-5 consideration.  James Lauriniatis reminds me of Andy Katzenmoyer instead of AJ Hawk, and I don't think we want to invest a high pick relying on the best defensive player out of the worst of the major conferences in college football.

something is disturbing about this picture, but I just don't think he is fast enough to be that good in the NFL...

Undoubtedly, some will want to draft a franchise QB with our top pick, and there are some guys with great arms available.  Matt Stafford and Sam Bradford are the premier names available, while others are sure to impress at the combine, such as Josh Freeman, Graham Harrell, Matt Sanchez, and others.  But overall, Bradford seems to be the only one worthy of a top-5 pick of this bunch, AND he is the youngest.  But he may not even declare for the NFL draft, and if he stays at OU, we should avoid drafting a QB at all costs.

Here's why....

  Michael_vick_dog_medium

See...he's reformed now....or something.  At least it's a short commute from Leavenworth...

Someone had to bring this up.  But watching Tyler Thigpen in this spread offense and the damage he can do with his legs, it is obvious that the spread can work with this type of quarterback.  Michael Vick never got a chance in Atlanta to run anything other than a traditional NFL offense.  This offense is ideal for him.  If you think Thigpen is a great runner, you need to watch a Michael Vick highlight reel to put that in perspective.  If you think Thigpen has a strong arm, again...see Vick video.  While Thigpen's accuracy has been an issue, Vick's was less of an issue.  For those who are against signing him for moral reasons, I understand.  But he likely will not command a ton of interest or an incredibly expensive contract.  He is a cheaper option than drafting a franchise QB, and he happens to be the ideal fit for this type of spread offense.  Furthermore, every running back he has played with has gained over a yard per carry while playing with Vick.  Teams MUST spy him, often leaving a safety or linebacker unable to help in the running game.  Mediocre to poor backs such as an old Warrick Dunn, TJ Duckett, and Jamal Anderson have done VERY well when Vick is the quarterback.  Imagine what Larry Johnson could do...

Not what Vick and Larry could do off the field....

With these moves, we would still be well under the cap, may find other starters at OL or LB in the draft or free agency.  We would be in competition.  Do I have confidence that this will happen?  No, not really.  But I have a very good idea that it would succeed.

If Maualuga becomes a Chief

He better find another number to wear. Cause it aint 58.

We may be "playing to win the game", but it seems like we're coaching to lose.

'09, a new era begins.

interestingly enough

58 is not an officially retired jersey number by the Chiefs, but no one has worn it since DT and I expect it to be officially retired sometime very soon

yeah, sure

i post more over at royalsreview and don’t get to participate much here for gamethreads, etc. because i’m usually at the game or at a bar watching it….totally agreed with never wanting to see 58 worn by another chief, unless that chief happens to be derrick’s son who is graduating from blue springs south this year…

come on

Aaron Curry is legit, he’s a better pick than Maualuga. Curry can play any position at linebacker, which is something we really need.

aaron curry is a good player

VERY good, but i don’t think he’ll be top 5…far better than Laurinitis also

Curry

He is starting to rise right now in the draft boards, I have seen a couple of sites that say he is the best defensive player this year and a top 5 talent. But this is not shared by everyone because others have him going as late as the 20th pick.

A lot of mock drafts

have KC taking Curry with the 3 pick… or even trading down and taking him at 5. Of course there is a smattering of Bradford, Orakpo, the DE from Georgia Tech (name escapes me right now, Johnson?) as well… but not a single one I’ve seen yet has us taking Malugalugalugalugaluga or Laura-naitis.

Not that mocks mean shiz… but apparently someone (or several someones) out there thinks Curry is top 5 worthy.

To my above post...

JL is much faster and more fluid than Rey, so check your stats before posting.

what stats? u have 40 times? he only gets so many tackles because of big 10 style football...

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

More than stats matter at MLB

the MLB needs to be wicked smaat as well as a physical beast. That is part of what makes Ray Lewis such a devil on the field. He not only knows his D back and forth, but he studies the tape so much that he can put his D in the position to counter what is coming. There’s a reason that Baltimore has been dominant on D for so many years, it’s guys like Ray and Ed Reed who have football smarts oozing from their Tori Anus.

In this situation I’d put Laurinaitis over Malugalugalugalugaluga. I don’t know that Rey is more than a physical dominator.

I don’t think either of these guys is going to be a bust – but I think Rey would fit better in a 3-4 where he’s allowed to roam and attack. James seems a better fit for a 4-3 as a defensive QB.

Just my take.

Ray's 33 and is a FA after this year

I’d love to see us get him. I watched the Cowboys game and the comment he made during the week was: “They run a simple Offense”. Instead of that firing up the Cowboys, they showed their true colors.
As much as I didn’t like him a few years back, he’s proven he’s one of the best in the business and is a force to be reckoned with. If he could bring that type of leadership capability and instill the type of attitude and drive for success, I could see great things happen on our Defense using his knowledge.
We’ll see. I think if the money’s/contract’s right, we should consider him a candidate for rebuilding the defense. I understand he plays in a different “D”, but I think he could help develop the “D” with the young players for the future.

Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."

The Chiefs need to be playoff contenders in 2009 for me to consider improvement. Clark wanted it in 2008...I'll give them an additional year.

Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.

I have to disagree with bringing him here

just for the simple fact alone, he should be smart and retire a Raven

I think he'll stay a Raven

I can’t see them letting him go… or him wanting to leave. It would be hard to see him play anywhere else.

He’ll probably retire… then come back as a Patriot… sheesh

QB

If it is not Bradford I don’t want a QB with the 2nd or 3rd pick. Stafford is not impressive to me at all, every highlight reel I see of his he throws ducks that are slow to get to the receivers. He is going to struggle a lot when he gets to the NFL throwing like he does, he is a INT machine waiting to happen.

I hope only one of these two declair for the draft that way the Lions can have him and we will not even have to think about drafting a QB and can go with the best player available, whoever is the truely best and not just the most touted QB.
