Around SBN: Kentucky Football: Tee Martin Reportedly Leaving for USC

The case for 64% (36%)

With all this hooplah of Herm's 85% comment, I was thinking about what we need as far as our team is considered. I think that we have a great group of guys on our team. Guys that will be part of this team for a long time to come. But do we really have 85% of our future on the team now? Well, let's look at the core of our players, the better guys on our team that will play a continuous role in the future.

LT: Branden Albert

LG: Brian Waters

TE: Tony Gonzalez

RB: Larry Johnson / Jamaal Charles

#2 WR: Dwayne Bowe

FB: Mike Cox

LE: Tamba Hali

DT: Glenn Dorsey

CB: Brandon Flowers / Brandon Carr

S: Bernard Pollard / Jarrad Page

LB: Derrick Johnson

P: Dustin Colquitt

These are the 14 core players on our team (in my opinion, ofcourse). Now some of you ask, "Why is D.Bowe listed as a #2?", "Why Larry Johnson?", and "Why Tony Gonzalez? He might not even be here in '09."

Well, I'll get to it...

I love D.Bowe. I love his personality. I think he's a great player. Do I think that he is our #1 reciever that we need? No. Why? I look at a guy like Calvin Johnson. And granted Bowe had a better rookie year than Johnson, but on a 0-15 team (possible 0-16 team) Calvin Johnson has managed to have a great season w/ 1229 recieving yards. We'll be lucky to get 1,000 from Bowe. And don't get it twisted, I'm not bashing D. Bowe, but I think he would be an outstanding #2 WR. Simply because he hasnt neccesarily soldified the #1 spot.

LJ.... LJ... LJ.... Well, as I know a lot of you here can't stand the thought of having LJ back in '09. But I hate to break it to you, I think he's here to stay (at least that year). We have no clue what kind of team we'll have after Herm leaves. I mean, imagine if we were to pick up a Bill Cowher type of coach (or Bill Cowher himself), we are running the ball. And we're bound to see LJ return to form with 20+ carries a game. But whether or not we have Herm or a running style coach, LJ will more than likely still have 2009 to prove himself. I think he has showed that he deserves another shot. His pass blocking has gotten a hell of a lot better and he's also showed that he can play well in this Arrow-spread offense. So, needless to say, LJ solidifies the starting RB spot (right now, and more than likely in '09. Unless we get stupid and draft Chris Wells- Ohio)

And as for Tony Gonzalez, I think with the firing of Carl Peterson, likely firing of Herm Edwards, a promising young and talented team, and the striking friendship he's developed QB Tyler Thigpen, I think that Tony Gonzalez will remain a Chief until the day he hangs up the cleats.

Now for the rest of the positions of need, I feel can be addressed within the next 2 off-seasons. We need 2 LBs, C, RG, RT, WR, RE, & DT. I think that we can fill at least 3-4 of those positions THIS off-season (w/ Bart Scott, MAYBE JUST MAYBE Julius Peppers - Carolina has to decide whether to tag Peppers or Jordan Gross. Wouldnt mind Haynesworth though. WEe can fill a couple needs in the 1st Round: Orkapo/ Maualuga, USC/ or Laurinaitis, Ohio, and 2nd Round: Alex Mack, Cal)

The QB position...

(Thanks for the reminder TRUTH)

This is a tough one. I think it really depends on what occurs in the off-season. It depends on if the new GM keeps Herm or not. And if NOT, will the new coach continue to work with the strengths of Tyler Thigpen? Can Thigpen play in the traditional NFL formation? Or does he need to play with the so-called "Arrow-spread" scheme that has launched him into the steady incline of an "above- average" NFL QB?

Brodie Croyle is a good football player. I DO think he should stick around as a 2nd or 3rd string QB. Damon SHOULD be traded. And I honestly think Quinn Gray should hang out on the depth chart at our #2 QB spot.

Do I think we should draft a QB? Yes. In the 1st round? No. We have bigger and better needs to fill as of right now.

All of that has yet to be seen. And these things will be answered this off-season.

This is all speculation, ofcourse... But it gives us something to think about.

Would that give us a 110% better team?

We need a future defensive leader, his name is James Laurinaitis and he can be selected in round 1 of the upcoming Draft.

Thanks.

We may be "playing to win the game", but it seems like we're coaching to lose.

I think your closer to a more realistic number than Herm

And I agree about Tony. I think this change will keep him here.

You think it's coincidence that I bleed red?

Good post Roc

…but one question. You didn’t address the QB position and it’s been debated here. Regardless of depth (we’re not talking about the QB depth chart). Some have even said to keep Brodie as a backup as well as Thigpen and trade Huard.

Thoughts on the QB and …is that position part of your equation?

OK, that’s 2 questions ;)

Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."

The Chiefs need to be playoff contenders in 2009 for me to consider improvement. Clark wanted it in 2008...I'll give them an additional year.

Thigpen WILL NOT be the Chiefs starting QB next year IMO. He can compete for the job and should be 2nd or 3rd string.

Ok...

I got it up there… Sorry. It was a little tough, but it’s the best opinion I could give.

i agree with you about almost everything

i’ve been saying to my friends that there is a quick fix to make this team at least an 8 game contender…and his name is Julius Peppers. if Carolina does not tag him, we should pay him whatever ridiculous amount he commands. beyond that, we still should draft a DE (Orakpo) or LB (Mauluga). as for the QB situation, it depends on our offense…we have proven that the spread, especially our pistol-based version, can work in the NFL, can control the clock, and most importantly, can score. if Tyler Thigpen is a success in this offense, as I think he has been, guess who is available that has a similar skill set but is even more talented….yes, Michael Vick…I’ve been working on a post for this offseason plan…should get it done soon

Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

by kcisbetterthanstlateverything on Dec 24, 2008 2:58 PM CST reply actions

I honestly think...

if Peppers is NOT tagged, we need to get him. And with the hiring of a new General Manager, chances are he won’t be the type of guy Carl was when it comes down to free agents. Hopefully the new GM sees fit to stamp his name of the team by signing a couple big Free Agents (Bart Scott/ Julius Peppers) and conquering a successful draft.

We may be "playing to win the game", but it seems like we're coaching to lose.

I think about Julius Peppers and Albert Haynesworth and then I...

jizz in my pants!

I couldn’t imagine a more dreamy line than Peppers, Dorsey, Haynesworth and Hali. Of course that is so far-fetched that I should be pimp-slapped for even thinking such thoughts.

If we were to land either of those beasts I would be happy. Doesn’t Peppers play LE though? I guess we could hold out hope that McBride could play RE or maybe draft one?

Of course, we’ll probably skip on both… I’ll play the pessimist and maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

M thoughts on the QB situation.....

I think as of now we have a solid starter and that is it. There is no use wastin roster spots on a guy who can’t stay healthy and a guy who would rather stand on the sideline and hold a clipboard. I think Thiggy has done a great job proving himself. Maybe hold on to Gray and draft a guy who will ride the pine and learn.

by ComeSackMyQB on Dec 24, 2008 2:58 PM CST reply actions

What's good CSMQB!?

Saw you on justin.tv Sunday. then my game froze up. So I refreshed and got sent to the 2nd room. My bad, dude….

I agree with you, though I think if Brodie IS worth a damn, it’d be a 3rd string. I mean, you look at a situation where we’re down 1 QB, and our 2nd has to step out a play or 2… I’d rather have Brodie out there than a freakin’ Ingle Martin or somethin’,

We may be "playing to win the game", but it seems like we're coaching to lose.

Wsup R O C?

I agree with that point. I just don’t want things to get handed back over to Brodie. He can ride the pine but I would rather pick up a guy in the 3rd or 4th rd who we can slowly develop. If we can manage that I would be all good with it. Yea I was wonderin what happened. I was talkin to you and got no response, lol. Thiggy, boy, I think we got a white Mike on our hands, lol. Thats pretty much what I said in there.

by ComeSackMyQB on Dec 24, 2008 3:35 PM CST reply actions

I remember...

being one of the few at the beginning of the season who in the forums at AA said one surprise we would get this season would be Thiggy starting by the end of the season and playing very well.

by ComeSackMyQB on Dec 24, 2008 3:37 PM CST reply actions

Yeah...

Ha-ha! He was a total joke over at the Addict. With that picture that coined him the name, “Bones”… Who would have thought, right?

Well, I think he turned out to be a great find… BUT my only concern is if he can stand up and play in any sort of system. I mean, our spread will eventually be exploited. And then what? And that’s a question I pose to Herm (if he was still our coach).

We may be "playing to win the game", but it seems like we're coaching to lose.

What do you guys think of this...

Derrick Ward???

He’s a free agent and after his 215 yard performance, he’s shown he has what it takes to carry the load. Brandon Jacobs also becomes a free agent, but the Giants are likely to lock him up. Derrick Ward on the other hand may want a team of his own. So, just incase we let go of LJ (as many of you would like) would Derrick Ward suffice? He’s closing in on 1,000 yards and playing really good at the position.

We may be "playing to win the game", but it seems like we're coaching to lose.

Ward's Going To Be 29 Next Season

So he’s not going to be a good bet for a rebuilding team since running backs usually fall off a cliff at 31. He’ll have about two years then he’ll be declining when the team will need him most.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Dec 24, 2008 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

As far as RB's are concerned

I think they’re a dime a dozen these days. One team’s trash (Ryan Grant) can be another team’s treasure.

If we build a great O-line and have the parts surrounding, you could plug any RB in to the system and be effective. I don’t believe in blowing big money on FA RB’s… and high draft spots should be reserved for the rare elite player like Adrian Peterson. I bet Jamaal Charles could put up 1,000 yards next year if we let him start 16 games.

Somebody is going to piss away good cash on Ward next season and he’ll probably do fine. I don’t think we need him though.

by Ochophosphate on Dec 24, 2008 8:31 PM CST up reply actions

I agree withe the QB assessment

A lot of big IF’S. We’ll see how well training camp pans out and may the best QB win the starting spot.
