"I’ve been able to sit down with Denny and with Carl, and there are stark differences between the two," Waters said. "Carl is emotional in the way he deals with a guy. Denny’s not. He plays it by the book. He’s a professional negotiator. He’s going to start low and work his way up. He’s very patient. He’s never a guy where you feel like emotions are involved. It’s all business with him."
But Waters wasn’t suggesting Thum is free with the Chiefs’ money
"He’s a staunch negotiator," he said. "He’s a money guy and knows finances, knows the cap. It’s just that there’s never anything personal."

All the financial benefits of Carl Peterson....
Without the baggage! I’ll take it!

I think Waters
took direct shot at Peterson earlier this year after the loss to Atlanta (I believe that was the game). He spoke of changes from the top down and I get the impression players are relieved Carl’s stepping out of the picture. With him out of the way I think we’re opening ourselves up to a lot more talent coming to KC because lets face it. It’s a small league and Carl’s earned the reputation for being a real asshat

He was doing something right
The first half of his career. Within his first 5 years he signed a future HOF QB and RB that could still play. I think he was a solid GM for the first 7 years but couldn’t get it done.
But you’re right….for the last decade we’ve been average so his negotiating style has become a point of conflict.
Most of the time, I think it’s less the GM and more the team. Is the team good? Will they be good for a while? Look at a lot of the top free agents…they go to good teams.

I think he started going into kind of panic mode
He was under the same pressure Marty was when he left that they had a good team but could never go all the way. I think that was a huge reason for the hiring of Vermeil and selling out the future to try to win, both for himself and before Lamar died. It was an act of desperation, pure and simple to sustain his legacy, instead it made it worse.

I've Got Nothing Against Thum
He’s done a good job with the cap…not his fault that Carl handed out horrible contracts to players who didn’t merit them. But he kept the bleeding to a relative minimum at least.
Won’t bother me if Thum’s around next year running the financial side of things.
Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.
