Got Dolphins Questions?

Make sure you head over to The Phinsider to help answer questions. Thanks! -Chris

Hello Chief fans!

Some of you may know me, others may not.  For those that don't, I'm the SBN blogger over at The Phinsider.  And as a die-hard Dolphins fan having to sit through some very bad recent seasons - especially last season - I know exactly how you guys feel right now.  And with that said, I'm really impressed with the level of activity in your community here at AP despite the team' struggles.  I think it just goes to show that KC fans really are among the NFL's best fans.

Anyways, in anticipation of Sunday's game at Arrowhead between the Dolphins and Chiefs, some of you might have some Dolphin questions.  If you do, post them and I'll do my best to answer them.

Thanks!

Oh - and Happy Holidays!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

Back when

Chris Chambers was traded before the deadline, what was Dolphin fans reaction?

by KansasCityShuffle on Dec 17, 2008 3:07 PM CST reply actions

It seemed like a mixed bag.

Some were happy because they felt that Chambers was a classic underachiever. He made the spectacular catches but dropped some of the easy ones. And he seemed to disappear at times during the course of a game.

Others were angry because they felt like the Fins were giving up their only legitimate receiving threat. And some thought that Chambers still had a lot of upside – mainly because of his tendency to make amazing catches here and there.

Personally, I always liked Chambers but getting a 2nd rounder for him was a pretty solid deal.

by Matty I on Dec 17, 2008 3:15 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm

Makes amazing catches and drops the easy ones….sounds an awful like a WR that plays for the chiefs.

Like Matty said, it was a mixed bag

He was good but never great, He makes the SportsCenter highlight reel catches but drops the easy ball that hits him in the chest on 3rd and long, we had a love-hate relationship with him.

I Wouldn't Pin Too Many Hopes On Chad Henne

I watched him play enough at Michigan to know that I’d never want him as the QB of my pro team. That guy always looked awkward out there.

Herm Edwards will not be the Chiefs' head coach next season.

by UCrawford on Dec 18, 2008 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

I watched the same QB at Michigan

and got the feeling he was NFL ready. Because of the offense they ran, and his ability to throw the deep ball with accuracy, I’d place my franchise in his hands. He does all the things you want a QB to do. He commands the huddle, he’s a leader, he has a strong arm with a quick, fluid motion. There are no hitches in his mechanics at all. He throws from a strong base, and gets a good push off his back foot. He stands tall in the pocket and throws over the top.

Everything else can be taught: how to read defenses, play action fakes, moving in the pocket, ball placement, timing etc etc. He’s the real deal, and the coaching staff here is handling him well. He also has a prett good mentor to learn from in Pennington. Chad P is one of the most cerebral QB’s in the league, so any knowledge he passes along to Henne will help.

I thought the two defensive ends that you guys drafted

Phillip Merling and Kendall Langford were really good picks. How do you guys think they are working out so far?

by TheQ on Dec 17, 2008 4:17 PM CST reply actions

Langford has been

better than anybody could’ve imagined. Merling hasn’t lived up to his draft status just yet, but he also came into camp with a sports hernia that wasn’t healed, and he’s steadily worked his way into the rotation on our DL. I think our defense speaks for itself as far as these 2 are concerned.

We'd prefer a draft pick from every team

but we’ll take a pat on the back. Seriously, though, knowing what we now know, I bet we could have gotten at least a 3rd rounder from every team in the AFC East for being a hitman, not to mention the Chargers, Steelers, and Colts.

If the Dolphins want to fund a statue of Bernard Pollard, that would also be acceptable.

For me,

The jury is still out. I can’t say everyone feels like that. He’s shown some signs of having real potential, like against the Bills where he had 175 yards. Also against the Raiders (you’re welcome) he had a pretty strong run where he actually broke some tackles. He’s had some good catches as well. But, he hasn’t been really consistant. And, his lack of toughness sometimes shows up by going out of bounds instead of taking a hit to get more yards. I’d like to say he’s a diamond in the rough, and I’m still hoping thats the case. He has amazing speed, and if he gets in the open field, he’s gone.

it was a reach

we’ve come to accept that he didn’t deserve to picked there. But the kid works hard, stays humble, and is developing nicely considering the complete wash that last season became. He obviously has potential, as you can see watching highlights of our first meeting with Buffalo.

He has incredible speed, good quickness, great hands when he’s focused and not pressing for a big play (like he has been lately) and is starting to pick up certain nuances to running routes and beating coverage. I’m not big on him taking hits, because guys like Marvin Harrison have made a career out of getting away from hits. I’d like to see him add some muscle in order to break through jams better and break a few tackles when he’s in the open field. He’ll never be TO ripped, but he just needs to be stronger than he is now. He may never live up to his lofty draft status, but all I want from him is to be consistent and get open down the field.

I always loved him at Ohio St.

and I am no Buckeye fan by any means. Of course everyone knows he was picked a little early but there is enormous potential there. My opinion (from afar) is that he is a number 2 guy. I will say that he is just a, “figuring it out”, away from being a number one guy and a great deep threat. Think somewhere between Bernard Berrian and Joe Horn.

He's improved from last year

but constant production is lacking, I dont know if its because he’s been double covered or simply not getting open.

I’ll hold my judgement until next year, the make or break year for a young player.
I’m sure with another WR added in the offseason the pressure will be taken off him.

Minor question

Is the term “Dolphan” universally acceptable among Miami’s followers? As you can tell, Chiefs fans love anything with “Arrowhead” in it, so that pretty much automatically makes any name cool. I can’t tell, though, if “Dolphan” enjoys similar appeal.

it's more Dolfan

but Dolphan is acceptable, too.

To answer the question it isn’t derogatory at all, and is accepted. Fish fan is somewhere in the middle. Dolphins are not fish, they are aquatic mammals so it can be seen as derogatory – like ‘Squish the Fish’.

Has the Wildcat stopped working?

or have the Dolphins started to not use it as much?

I notice defenses starting to catch onto it a little. Have the Dolphins been doing it less frequently?

by I need more Esteban on Dec 18, 2008 12:28 PM CST reply actions

Combination of both

we haven’t used it nearly as much, and there hasn’t been many new wrinkles involved in the past few weeks. But the teams we’ve faced have also prepared for it, which has limited it’s effectiveness.

The good thing about it is this: if you don’t prepare for it, we’ll run it at you all game long, and if you do prepare for it, you may be wasting practice time on something you won’t see. Or you may just be practicing against one Wildcat set, and we bring out something totally different. Coach Sparano has repeatedly said it’s part of our base offensive packages, so there’s always the possibility of it showing up.

Jake Long

Was the consensus #1 OT at the time of the draft in the same way that Glenn Dorsey was considered the consensus #1 DT. How was Long panned out? Are you impressed? Do you wish that you would have taken another draft pick instead? What about the success of Clady in Denver? I remember reading that Jake Long was considered the #1 prospect because he was pro ready and solid and Clady was viewed as a reach despite his size and strength because he wasn’t so pro ready. However, some thought Clady may ultimately have a higher upside. Any thoughts?

by schraggyj on Dec 18, 2008 1:30 PM CST reply actions

Long has been as good as advertised

He’s a relentless run-blocker, and has only allowed 2.5 sacks thus far in his rookie season. All signs point to him being an Elite LT in this league for many, many years. I believe we made the right pick when we took Long first overall, because there are very few Elite left tackles, and having one is such a huge boon to an offense. Clady has been good in Denver, and he’ll end up being a top tier LT, but I think Long is the better run-blocker of the two, which fits our style better than Clady would. Parcells and Ireland are building a smashmouth football team, and having a guy like Long to anchor the line is a great start.
