Tank Tyler has disappeared

Tank Tyler has disappeared.  After making 32 tackles in the first 8 games of the season, he has made 1 tackle in the last 4 games.  Is he fighting off an injury?  Have opponents been double-teaming him?  Has he given up?

NFL.com - Tank Tyler

As a point of comparison, Glenn Dorsey has been pretty steady the whole season.  Whether he is good or a bust, his stats have been similar from game to game.

NFL.com - Glenn Dorsey

Now that I look at Ron Edwards stats, it appears that Tyler has been losing playing time to Edwards.  If Tyler is losing PT to Edwards, is it because Tank is not that good?  Perhaps Gunther (or Herm) is trying to motivate Tank?

Tank's decline/benching/injury surprises me a litte.  He was making a lot of tackles in the first half of the season.  Projected over 16 games, he was on pace for 64 tackles.  That is quite a lot for a defensive tackle.  Of course the fact that we were so bad against the run as a team (and allowing so many opponents' plays from scrimmage) meant that there were a lot of tackles to be made.

I still think 64 is a lot.

Interesting point

While tackles aren’t always the best judge of a player’s effectiveness, 1 tackle in the last four games is ridiculous.

Not sure what’s up with him.

He was questionable coming into the Raiders game with an injury

Not sure if something has been lingering before that or not.

I’ve noticed Edwards getting more playing time lately. I think maybe they are trying to add in some more experience on the D-line to get our run defense up a little more. Seems to have worked.

Except That It Hasn't

Buffalo ran all over us and Oakland’s running backs had a lot of success against us until Cable abandoned the run.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

But it has

Oakland only had 102 yds rushing by their running backs for 3.5 yds a carry last week compared to 300 the last time we played them.

New Orleans only had 103 yds rushing, 3.7 yds carry

Tampa Bay had 81 yds rushing, 3.2 yds carry

So yes, the run defense has improved in the last month or so.

Huh?
Oakland only had 102 yds rushing by their running backs for 3.5 yds a carry last week

Where are you getting your stats from? Oakland ran for 139 yards on us, their leading rusher got 4.6 yards per carry and the team got 4.8. The only reason the yardage total wasn’t higher was because Tom Cable abandoned the run and foolishly decided to put a close game into the hands of JaMarcus Russell.

And you can’t throw out JaMarcus Russell’s rushing stats simply to pad your numbers…not when he put up 37 yards on two carries.

New Orleans only had 103 yds rushing, 3.7 yds carry

And scored two TDs on the ground. And their leading rusher got 5.5 yards per carry. And they still put up 30 points and won the game by 10.

Tampa Bay had 81 yds rushing, 3.2 yds carry

Which would be impressive if Jeff Garcia hadn’t thrown for 339 yards as the defense blew a three TD lead and cost us the game (which was similar to the San Diego game where LT was contained but not Philip Rivers). Defenses that stop one aspect of the other team’s offense while letting the other run wild aren’t good defenses.

Any reason you decided to omit the Buffalo game (4.5 yards per carry) and the New York game (5.6 yards per carry) from your examples? They fell within the “good” period for the Chiefs too.

The Chiefs should win 5 to 6 games this year and no less than 4 for this season to be considered progress in any way.

QB scrambles

Defending QB scrambles are not the same as defending RBs. QB scrambles are usually pass plays that broke down. I specifically said Oakland “running backs”.

The only reason the yardage total wasn’t higher was because Tom Cable abandoned the run

You have no idea whether they would have been able to run or not if they had done it more. Oh thats right, you have the magical ability to see what would have happened even though it didn’t. I forgot.

And (New Orleans) scored two TDs on the ground.

Big deal. They were both 1 yard runs.

Completely irrelevant. We were talking about the Chiefs improving against the rush and they largely shut Tampa Bay down.

Why you always looking for excuses to explain away any progress the team makes? Seriously, you’re a Raiders fan aren’t you?

Cherrypicking
Defending QB scrambles are not the same as defending RBs.

Rushing yardage is rushing yardage…it counts on the stat sheet, it counts when the QB runs one in for a TD, therefore it counts against the Chiefs’ in discussions of their run defense. You’ve complained about other people excluding stats when it makes their arguments look better and I’ve backed you up on it, so live up to that standard in your own arguments.

Big deal. They were both 1 yard runs.

Both resulting in TDs, which counts against the Chiefs in discussions of their run defense. The Chiefs defense gave up two rushing TDs to an unimpressive rushing attack.

Completely irrelevant. We were talking about the Chiefs improving against the rush and they largely shut Tampa Bay down.

No, we’re talking about the Chiefs improving defensively and you’re trying to claim that a game the Chiefs defense completely blew (because they screwed up a 3 TD lead) is a sign of defensive improvement and that’s an intellectually dishonest argument. The Bucs didn’t focus on the run because they were behind and because Jeff Garcia was cutting us up. You cherrypicked a stat to make your argument look better and it’s something you dime out other people for so I’m calling you on it. Don’t be a hypocrite.

The Chiefs should win 5 to 6 games this year and no less than 4 for this season to be considered progress in any way. If he can't win at least 9 games next season, Herm's a joke.

I would rather see yards given up over tds.

At least 10-6 next year taking our division, or Herm goes.

I'd Rather See Neither Yards Nor TDs Given Up :)

Is it possible

that maybe Tank is now learning the role of a defensive tackle in this League? He now knows his main job is stuffing the lane that the offense tries to create and keep the linemen off the linebackers to make the tackle. I guess it’s that I really like Tank as a player, probably because he reminds me a lot of myself when I played ball. (back when we wore leather helmets) It would really be nice if Tank and Glen could be our fantastic duo for the next 10 years.

One thing

before we even utter the word bust with Dorsey, let’s look at the short career of Demarrio Williams for the Texans thus far. Anyone who called him a bust after they took him number 1 has to be feeling foolish now.

by I need more Esteban on Dec 2, 2008 1:47 PM CST reply actions

You Mean Mario Williams

He started emerging seriously his second season. Dorsey may still emerge (I’m hopeful) but Tank and Turk are really starting to look like busts. So’s Hali, unfortunately.

The Chiefs should win 5 to 6 games this year and no less than 4 for this season to be considered progress in any way.

The defensive line is a unit

much like an offensive line. It takes time to know how to work with each other and to gel. Hopefully they can all play together and continue to get better

I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am.

They're Currently Playing

Like the worst defensive line in the history of the NFL. And they haven’t improved much (if at all) since the season started.

At this point in the season we should be past the “hopefully they’ll learn to play together” stage and at the stage where we’re seeing at least frequent flashes of how they’ll look next season. All I see is a defensive front seven that after 12 games still can’t stop the run or rush the passer.

The Chiefs should win 5 to 6 games this year and no less than 4 for this season to be considered progress in any way.
