Sources: Raiders look at releasing CB Hall as soon as Wednesday
Angered by the Oakland Raiders' 2-6 start, team owner Al Davis asked his front office staff to explore the possibility of releasing several players, including cornerback DeAngelo Hall, according to multiple sources.
The Raiders are expected to release Hall on Wednesday, sources told ESPN's Michael Smith.
The process started on Monday, a day after the Raiders' embarrassing 24-0 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Davis, looking ahead to rest of the season and to 2009, asked his staff to study a list of potential players who could be let go before the end of the week or after the season, sources said.

Damn!!!
You beat me to it. That’s absolutely insane, though…they’ve had him for all of half a season and they’re already cutting him. I know he’s playing like crap right now, but he’s also a young CB who was decent at an earlier point in his career and you think they’d give him a couple of seasons. The Raiders are absolutely imploding.

Apparently
Hall won’t be the last one either. The rumor is (via ESPN’s Michael Smith) that Javon Walker ($55 million, I think $16 guaranteed) and Tommy Kelly ($50 million, $19 guaranteed) could be gone after the season as well.
Al Davis is making a solid argument for being the worst owner/worst run franchise in pro sports.
All Three Contracts Are From This Year Too
Kelly and Walker were stupid signings when he made them. They could have gotten away with not paying Walker at all if they’d accepted his retirement, but Davis had to go and screw it all up by talking him out of it and now eight games later he wants to cut the guy? I don’t think it’s even debatable that Davis is the worst owner in the NFL right now.
And what happens if the NFLPA decides to do greivances on these cuts too? If they do file them and they’re upheld, I wonder what Goodell’s going to do about it. Seriously, I think there’s a case to be made that Al Davis is incapable of functioning as a team owner right now.

Davis Is Attempting To Get Out Of Paying Bonuses
It’s not a strong case, but grievances have been filed over less.

I hate to say it about the man
but at some point, it would seem that his ability to reason with any sense of responsibility to his team, franchise and fans would come into question. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Davis is not able to function in a complete capacity at this point. I hate it for the team and fans especially because like them or not, they are one of our longest and best rivalries.
I was actually looking into doing a post yesterday about the relationship that seems to exist between the Chiefs and the Raiders. In looking back over the last 48 years each team has always chased the other making me think that one always made the other better, even if it was just a sense of pride between the two owners. Now that Lamar is passed and Davis is so far removed from reality, the Chiefs at least are realizing they need a new direction.
I also see that this quite possibly is affecting the entire West division. We all suck this year and something needs to change to get the West back up to the dominant division that it always was.
I have never used that many big words in a single day of my life. I will be on oxygen the rest of the day.
"But what do I know, I’m like an empty room with a large ECHO"
Maybe
Problem is, who’s going to get rid of Davis. I’m not entirely sure that the NFL can do it. And the way the Raiders’ ownership is structured nobody internally can really depose him. Al Davis really screwed up that team’s management structure but good.

Franchise laws
I don’t know how the NFL sets up their franchises (teams). I doubt that any owner would sign on with billions of dollars if there was a possibility that the team could be taken away from them without some sort of extreme personal conduct problem (such as using the team to launder money).
Davis has looked like Death for several seasons now and I think with his time running short that he is getting to be even more desperate and clueless in his decisions.
I Don't Know If There's An Overriding Law
Because the ownership situation for teams is often so varied. The NFL has said they prefer a family ownership arrangement (like with Pittsburgh and Kansas City) but that’s not the way it’s always worked out. The Raiders are actually a limited partnership…Davis isn’t the only owner, there were three (although one let Davis do what he wanted and Davis forced the other one out decades ago). Green Bay is actually a fan-owned team, so there is no owner. I’m not sure what other teams’ situations are…but the Raiders appear to be a unique enough deal that Goodell may not be able to do anything. But then again in baseball, MLB was able to force Steinbrenner out of power for awhile, and I suppose that if Davis started bucking the league then Goodell could always do things to make life hell for Davis (like taking away draft picks).

Also
The credit for this should really go to Adam Schefter. He was the first to report it but of course print media politics precludes ESPN from mentioning that.
Dont worry
Schefter puts his name on anything that has to do with him. He gets enough credit on his own.
He's the reporter for the in-house league network
So he’s going to have more scoops than most. ESPN just never credits anyone.
Tough To Bill Yourself As "The Worldwide Leader"
And then give credit to other people, especially those who continually scoop you. Even though ESPN hasn’t been much of a leader for awhile now. They’ve cluttered up their pro football analysis with a lot of morons (Keyshawn, Emmitt, Irvin, Berman, Kornheiser). It’s rare that I’ll watch a MNF game because Kornheiser is such a tool and his stupidity just dominates the broadcast. I wish they’d just go to using Tirico and Jaws…that would be a good broadcast team.

+1
Love Jaws – my favorite person to watch break down plays
Hate Kornheiser – loser who thinks he is the God of sports
Jaws Is Good
But Cris Collinsworth is just on a whole other level because his presentation skills are better than Jaws’. I mean, I like Jaws a lot on MNF, but I’d rather watch any game where Collinsworth is doing the color work and analysis. I think Bill Simmons at ESPN said it best…
After listening to Cris Collinsworth speak for three hours a week (no lie, I added it up) on NBC and Showtime and not coming even close to getting tired of him, I realized there should be a 24-hour Collinsworth channel where he could give his opinions on everything, whether it was the election, movies, the stock market, the real-estate swoon or whatever. More importantly, I would check out that channel at least six times a day, especially late at night for the racier Collinsworth opinions, where he says things in his pseudo-drawl like, “Guys, I watched the tapes and I gotta tell you something — pound for pound, Alexis Texas might just be the best young actress working in porn right now.”

+1 on Collinsworth
Collinsworth is about as good as it gets.
But I like Jaws too because he has a spot in his heart for KC…. plus he’s pretty good.

I Like Them Both
I kind of wish that Showtime would find a way to get Jaws and Collinsworth on “Inside the NFL”. That would be a great discussion panel and I think that it would be better than the current mix. Phil Simms is okay at analysis, but seriously his personality is so bland and he doesn’t really challenge anyone (unlike Marino, who wasn’t a great analyst but who would occasionally pick a good fight) that the show’s kind of boring. And Warren Sapp can be amusing, but he needs to work on his delivery and public speaking…a lot. He’s almost Bush-like in how he butchers the English language. Collinsworth needs a peer in that studio to keep him on his toes and Jaws comes closest.

Agreed
It’s a rare occasion when I can go an entire show and understand every single word he says. I think part of it is attributable to his very noticeable lisp, which seems to get worse the faster he tries to speak when making his points.

So what do you think Shannon?
ibbidy bippitty Chiefs bo.
Just keep matriculating the ball down the field boys.
You Know
Part of that is actually due to a genuine speech impediment. Guy can’t really help that.

Well he's better then Emmitt
…and I don’t think he has one :-)
And as far as I can tell it’s not a lisp.
Just keep matriculating the ball down the field boys.
Yup

OK...but I still think it's a coverup for having an intellect of a gnat.

I took it from HBO that they wanted Collinsworth
to become the new Len Dawson of “Inside the NFL” and for some reason things didn’t work out. He is very good though.
"But what do I know, I’m like an empty room with a large ECHO"
Collinsworth's More Like Buoniconti Or Glanville
Only smarter and a better researcher. Collinsworth is much more abrasive personality-wise than Dawson and he’s not a good option to be the moderator like Dawson was, which is why they brought in James Brown (and Bob Costas before him). That’s not meant as a knock on Collinsworth at all, just that moderating the show like Dawson did is not a role he’s cut out for in the way he carries himself. He’s there to take hardline positions and be a panel member, not to direct the panel. Dawson had a softer touch…which doesn’t make Collinsworth worse than Dawson, just different.

They were trying to move Bush at the deadline
Wonder if his is one contract they’re dropping or if Fargas is just cut after seasons end

Can't Really Blame Fargas
Once Kiffin left, so did any semblence of an offensive game plan. Al Davis really mucked that team up good and proper.

The Chiefs Probably Wouldn't Want Him
He’s got some real attitude problems on the field…a lot of stupid penalties that really kill his team. And we definitely don’t want him until he’s cleared waivers (he gets a $16 million dollar payment if he gets hurt). After waivers, he might be worth it to sign because he’s only 24, but I’m not sure if he’s a guy you want to make a cornerstone for your franchise. Some definite baggage there.
