Chiefs Get Feel Good Win Against Hapless Raiders

4ec9545d-a808-4bef-88cf-75571665f025_medium

via ESPN.com

It wasn't pretty, exciting or convincing. But the Kansas City Chiefs got a win.

The Chiefs topped the Raiders 20 to 13 this afternoon in a rather boring contest.

Here are a few key points from the game:

  • The Chiefs played excellent on 3rd down with a 53% conversion rate.
  • Larry Johnson ran effectively on 22 carries for 92 yards.
  • Thigpen really zeroed in on Tony Gonzalez today. TG caught 8 passes for 110 yards. Bowe caught 2 passes and a few other players caught one.
  • The Chiefs defense played one of its best games of the year. We cut down on missed tackles and we contained the run as best we could.

At the end of the day, a win is a win. This feels great.

JaMarcus Russell

Has got to be in the discussion for worst QB in the league right now. Unbelieveable how many wide open throws he screwed up. If the Raiders had a QB who was able to complete even half his throws I don’t think we pull out this win.

And It Wasn't Because Of Our Pass Rush

Zero sacks…again.

by UCrawford on Nov 30, 2008 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

Hate to put it this way

But he seems too mentally slow to play the game.

by Chris Thorman on Nov 30, 2008 6:27 PM CST up reply actions

Yup

Everything’s a bullet, whether it’s 4 yards away or 40. The only receiver he seems to be able to hit is his tight end.

We forced three of his eleventy bad throws

DJ blitzed once and forced what should have been intentional grounding and Hali and Babin each forced one bad throw…is there a reason we are still only rushing 4 guys 90% of the time? Have we figured out that our front four isn’t good enough for that?

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 30, 2008 6:37 PM CST up reply actions

+1.

Yeah, we got to him three times, but other than that he had all the time in the world. And he did just about nothing with it.

by rockchalk on Nov 30, 2008 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

Easy.

He played really well against Denver last week, and he started off hot today, so I figured he might be on the way up. Finally figuring stuff out.

Uh, no. After his 4-6 start, he made about two good passes the rest of the game; everything else was thrown five feet over a receiver’s head and/or five feet ahead of him. It was pretty embarrassing. Bones certainly didn’t have one of his better games, and he made two terrible, atrocious throws, but he still clearly outshined JaMarcus.

by rockchalk on Nov 30, 2008 7:31 PM CST up reply actions

Happy we finally put up a W on the road.

All I can say is thank you Raiders!!!

Is anyone tired of the TG basketball analogies yet?

How long has this guy been in the NFL. Sorry it just got old I guess.

What are the odds

that Herm is fired at the end of this season after this win?

Ridiculous Upside: All the "Almost NBA" info you can handle!

by Ridiculous Matt on Nov 30, 2008 6:32 PM CST reply actions

Probably About The Same As If He Lost This And Every Other Game

I don’t think Clark Hunt cares that much any more. Herm’s probably coming back…and if this win is the reason for it, it shouldn’t be.

by UCrawford on Nov 30, 2008 6:45 PM CST up reply actions

Realistically? >15%

Which is maybe down from like 17, but it’s entirely possible that it’s been 0 all season with the ‘rebuilding’ mantra going around.

This kills the ‘historically bad’ monkey on his back, but we’d be surprised if anybody major other than maybe special teams gets canned.

by Official Arrowhead Pride Parade on Nov 30, 2008 6:46 PM CST up reply actions

Hate To Say It

But that’s probably right. And I’ll bet Herm will stick up for Priefer too so he probably won’t go either.

by UCrawford on Nov 30, 2008 6:47 PM CST up reply actions

Yup

I’d attribute most of our improvement in that area to putting in a good kicker instead of the guy Herm and Priefer wanted.

Keep telling you guys, Herms job has not been in danger at any time this season

They knew this was going to be a rough season and it has been. Next year will be the determining year.

by ChiefDJ on Nov 30, 2008 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

I've been sayin it

Play to Tony Gonzales and we will get to the W.

I never got to see or hear the game. Only what I’ve been reading around the net. It still feels good to see a win against those sad sack raiders in their own house.

GO CHIEFS!!

by bigbearomaha on Nov 30, 2008 6:32 PM CST reply actions

If Asomugha was on Gonzalez

who was shutting down Bowe? I think he only had three balls go his way (1 drop, 1 good catch, 1 great game saving catch)?

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 30, 2008 6:41 PM CST reply actions

Seemed like Thigpen was locked on TG most of the game

The Raiders were getting a lot of pressure on him so there wasn’t a lot of time to go through progressions, so maybe thats the reason. But didn’t seem like he was really looking for anyone else.

by ChiefDJ on Nov 30, 2008 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

Sheesh

Bills scored THREE today. How terrible is our defense??

by Chris Thorman on Nov 30, 2008 6:56 PM CST reply actions

Run Defense, Run Defense, Run Defense

The difference had a lot more to do with the fact that Fargas is just not a good runner. We still made him look like a workhorse, but that dictated both games. Lynch and Jackson own the lines, Trend Edwards get his groove back. Fargas gets contained, McFadden is a no show on the ground, boom, Jamarcus Russell goes back to his hefty boy modelling school mode.

by Official Arrowhead Pride Parade on Nov 30, 2008 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

Plus, we had five turnovers.

One of which directly led to a TD on the return. And they scored like 20 points off TOs, right?

So, there’s that, which is a huge difference. Plus Trent Edwards came out of the game in the second half.

But still, yeah, our D sucked. It played much better today, but it was absolutely pathetic last Sunday.

Strange Games

Last week: Bills beat us by 20, Raiders win big over the Broncos
This week: Bills get beat by SF, We beat the Raiders, and the Broncos win big over the Jets

Just goes to prove that the team has to show up and play the game. We did well today and I’ll give the team credit for playing better than the Raiders today, which is all that matters. Can we do it two weeks in a row? I think we can show up and beat the Broncos in their house as well.

by TXChiefan on Nov 30, 2008 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

"I think we can show up and beat the Broncos in their house as well."

They do that, and they should turn a few heads.

We’ve been lousy at Mile-High for years. If Herm can haul in this year’s Bad News Chiefs (Bears), and even squeak out a win there, folks will need to re-think about screaming for his head.

Ain’t been a coach here that I can remember doing as well as .500 in Denver, long-term. Herm gets us to the point where we got a decent shot at 4 Home/away wins against the Faders & Donk-o’s, and he may be a keeper.

by Bleedingredandgold on Dec 1, 2008 9:32 AM CST up reply actions

What's Glen Dorsey's deal?

DJ shows up today, Leggett and Boiman look serviceable, Hali even makes a few plays, but still no Dorsey playmaker plays.

by Official Arrowhead Pride Parade on Nov 30, 2008 7:05 PM CST reply actions

D-taclkes need help to make "big" plays

Especially the other tackle, ends, and LBs. If those ai’nt soaking up boidies, they double the best guy.

Ergo, how often was he 2teamed? Also, howoften did a 2team on him allow a good play by someone else?

by Bleedingredandgold on Nov 30, 2008 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

Give the ST group a little credit today

they made some plays, if not picking up returns.

I miss Savage. He may not have had better results, but he was more fun to watch.

by Bleedingredandgold on Nov 30, 2008 7:21 PM CST reply actions

Agreed

Savage brings no less to the return game than Robinson and has more value to the offense.

by Idahochief on Nov 30, 2008 7:25 PM CST up reply actions

Robinson

is by far the better returner to me. Doesn’t have lighting speed but he jukes well, is hard to hit, and controls the ball better than Savage. Savage doesn’t have the technique and he looks on the field like what he is: a fill in

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 30, 2008 11:12 PM CST up reply actions

When Robinson

starts breaking the occasional long one consistently, I’ll agree that he’s better.

Savage may not have the technique, but he’s generally been good for an extra yard or 3 after contact, and Robinson’s not as good a hitter, from what I’ve seen. What’s the stats sheet say?

by Bleedingredandgold on Dec 1, 2008 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

It is sad

That Savage, who strains to be average, may be the best the Chiefs have shown us the past 2 years.

by KHAZAD on Dec 1, 2008 12:09 AM CST up reply actions

Hold a good return man down

Then take advantage of a gift on ST to score= 1 win

Chan earned his money today.

I thought Chan did an excellent job managing Thiggy today. He could tell his throwing was a little off so he utilized his other talents for gain. Adaptable play calling seems to be his strong suit.

by Idahochief on Nov 30, 2008 7:29 PM CST reply actions

+1

And Thiggy seems adaptable, too

Did Herb Taylor start today

"But what do I know, I’m like an empty room with a large ECHO"

by Lanier63 on Nov 30, 2008 7:46 PM CST reply actions

Not Sure

He was playing right guard for awhile, though.

by UCrawford on Nov 30, 2008 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

Saw Wade Smith at RG most of the day

So Herb Taylor might have just been filling in for him a couple plays.

by ChiefDJ on Nov 30, 2008 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

Probably

It was in the first quarter so he might have just subbed in for a bit. Got a false start penalty when he jumped the snap by a half-second.

by UCrawford on Nov 30, 2008 9:01 PM CST up reply actions

He Was The Guard

He jumped right across the front of the center as he was snapping.

I agree with you about the announcers (we got a terrible draw for this game) but they were right about his position.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Nov 30, 2008 10:04 PM CST up reply actions

He was the RG.

Just on an unbalanced line, with McIntosh to the left of Albert effectively lining up as a ‘tight end’ and Cottam to the right of Taylor.

That’s why it looked like he was the RT.

by rockchalk on Dec 1, 2008 1:39 AM CST up reply actions

Niswanger was dinged up

the play before the false start- Smith moved to center, Taylor came in and played Guard.
