Don't Get Rid of Herm!

I am new to this site and after a few hours of reading through posts I can see that I will now be addicted to it. I have been a chiefs fan since I can remember and have all of the same pain and hope that most of you on this site do.

I don't, however, like to see these negative posts about the coaching staff and the play calling. Sure, I am like everyone sitting at home or in the stands and cuss the coaches out for what look to be like bad calls.

I deal with people at my work everyday that say Herm is gone after this season and I have to stand up for him. I hope some people read this and back me up that Herm is one of the best coaches in the NFL. When the Chiefs signed him I was so excited. Now, granted the record has been steadily declining but I like the way he told everyone, look we are rebuilding - we are going to build a team, not patch one together.

The Denver game, The Jets game, and yesterday's game prove that Herm is making his impression known. The team respects him and even as frustrated as they and all of us are, they see what Herm is doing.

Basically I'm just saying that I hope Herm doesn't get fired half way through this thing, he's here for the long haul and always takes responsibility.

Does anyone remember the transparency he had at a press conference with the Jets.

RUN THE BALL!

STOP THE RUN!

NO TURNOVERS!

That is his gameplan and his motto and I respect Herm Edwards and as a diehard Chiefs fan I am in for the longhaul!!!!

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

I don't know that Herm is one of the best coaches in the NFL

But I do think he’s the right guy to rebuild this team from scratch. It doesn’t matter how brilliant a playcaller you have, if you don’t have the talent or the experience to execute it you’re not going to win and thats pretty much the situation the Chiefs are in now.

Despite the frustrations you have seen on this site the last several months, do not be discouraged. This is one of the few havens for the silent majority of Chiefs fans that love the team no matter who is running it or who the players are.

Its easy to slip over to the dark side, but you are not alone in your struggle to hold back the negativity until it all comes together.

Welcome to Arrowhead Pride.

Dont Get ride of Herm?

I have to say i cant see where he is doing any good heres what i use to back up my beliefs. Tell me what his overall record is ? What was his record as Jets head coach? how many times did he take then to the playoffs? And when he did how many playoff games did he win? what is his record with the chiefs? In my post (4-4 should be the record) i didnt mention the fact that if we were trying to get a playoff spot i would be totally in agreement with his chioce of calls to punt or kick a field goal but in those games we were 1-5 and 1-6 we arent playing for a playoff spot> We are playing for pride and to learn how to win. I just cant agree with punting or kicking a field goal inside the 5 yd line when it is only going to put you up one touchdown and a 2 pt conversion. All im saying is we are 1-7 if we would have went for it and not made those 4th down conversions and we lost we are still 1-7 but if we go for it and make it we are at least 3-5 and one game out of forst in the AFC West.

by Warpath on Nov 3, 2008 8:22 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you

But he did go to the playoffs in 3 out of 5 years in NY. He won one playoff game there. More than the Chiefs have in the last 14 years.

! playoff win WOW

I mean one playoff win in 3 trips sounds like a marty schottenhimer coached team so why go back to what it was liek before win 13 games and get put out first game off the playoffs I wish we would have promoted bill cowher the man we let get away to pittsburgh if he would come out of retirement what a glourious day it would be

Get real

Herm isn’t even in the discussion of top 15 NFL coaches, let alone 5. He takes responsibility for NOTHING and over abuses the excuse of rebuilding. Take a look at the Atlanta Falcons then us. Our record should resemble something similar to their’s but Herm’s ineptness to coach has us looking at another 4-12 season, if that

I’m getting tired of people bitching about people bitching. I often see a lot of reality being misinterpreted as pessimism or negativity by others. Just because people question or don’t support particular decisions or personnel doesn’t make them any less of a fan. Just as expressing your freedom of speech doesn’t make you any less American if your views aren’t in favor of governmental policies. If anything it makes you more of an American/Chiefs fan if you speak up and try to take action for whats in best interest of our country/team. Just because we’re spoonfed shit doesn’t mean we have to take it. It’s just like how many of us in the preseason knew it was stupid to put all our eggs in one basket named Croyle, sign our kicker based off a one day kicking contest, and the list can go on if you’d like. Simply, we shouldn’t fault fellow fans for holding our team to a higher standard and expecting only their best. It’s wrong to expect any less from the coaching and if this Herm’s best (which I believe it is) its time for him to go after this season

Problem is...

Herm is a career loser. 39-41 in Jersey. 14-26 in KC. Now were supposed to give him a pass because we look better in the loses. Its comes to that? Being content with not being blown out?
Herm has pissed away two wins in two weeks. Try to blame whoever you want but in two weeks we had the lead inside two minutes and managed to lose both of them. The dude can’t close the book on a game, he couldn’t do it in Jersey, he hasn’t been able to do it here.
We’re going to hear the same bs rebuilding stuff next year. Take a look at the teams that drafted ahead of us, teams that are also rebuilding, everyone has a better record than us. One is sitting pretty with 5 wins (with a first year QB and coach to boot) one is sitting at .500 (again with a first year coach). This process only takes years with a subpar coach leading the charge.

I agree well said

Man thank yo ui dont understand why its so hard for everyone to see hermy did give those ganes away . The final say is hermys if we go for it on 4th down and he played conservativly i dont know about everyone else but i dont want a conservative football team (Marty ball ) i want a kick them while thier down team with no chance a t a comeback one question to everyone else besides HIV 2 Elway because we are on the same page would the steelers colts cowboys or anyother storied team go for it on 4th and 1 ……..Damn right they would and thats why they have rings and championship banners

sorry everybody

He deserves another year...

But that doesn’t mean he should be absolved of criticism. This is the NFL, not some pee-wee everyone gets a trophy and a hand job league.

by HIV 2 Elway on Nov 3, 2008 9:38 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

"Deserves"

I honestly don’t think that a head coach who wins just a third of his games and who’s got a team this bad in his third season can make a serious claim that he deserves anything beyond being placed firmly on the hot seat. The players individually look promising, but as head coach I haven’t seen Herm do anything that makes me think he should be back here next season. His game management is terrible, his ability to evaluate players and put them in a position to succeed is questionable, and he never holds himself accountable for the product that goes on the field.

I’m not that worried about the player talent level right now, but Herm Edwards is an absolute loser as a head coach. You could have given him that Patriots team from last year and he’d have them going 9-7.

by UCrawford on Nov 4, 2008 10:12 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

They put a plan in place...

and he should get to see it out for another year. I think it does more harm than good to abandon ship now. That said, if he has another solid draft next year (and I may be jumping the gun saying he had a solid one this year) and the team still underperforms…OFF WITH HIS HEAD.

I think he’s a loser coach but he does seem to be able to pick players. Give him one more year and at the very least he lays a foundation with good young players for a coach who knows how to win.

by HIV 2 Elway on Nov 4, 2008 10:29 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why

Seriously, the plan consisted of “get younger”, and that’s about it Any coach can do that. Herm and Carl both whiffed on their handling of the QB situation in the offseason (Croyle was a horrible gamble), they whiffed on their management of the d-line, their rebuilding of the defense (which has been going on for three years) has completely regressed, and the Chiefs have blown two games they should have won this year not because of player mistakes but because of game management errors made by the coaching staff. Herm’s contribution to the rebuilding effort has been almost nothing other than standing on the sidelines with a befuddled look on his face.

Will I go all apoplectic if he goes 1-15 and they bring him back? No, not really, as long as Carl Peterson gets fired. But he’s done nothing to merit being brought back next year. He’s the coach of a 1-7 team that’s been blown out in half their games and who’s won a third of his games after two and a half seasons. Coaches with a track record like that are entitled to shit.

That's a little harsh

We are improving…so that says something about his coaching doesn’t it? :)

Herm

The Chiefs are 1-7 and we’ve only been competitive in half of those games (New England, Denver, New York, Tampa Bay). In the games where we were competitive but lost, coaching decisions and game management were as much to blame for the losses as player management.

Over a career spanning seven and a half seasons, Herm’s got a .442 win percentage. He’s won 35 percent of his games here. There is very little evidence that he’s anything other than a bad football coach who just happens to be in a situation where he can blame being in a rebuilding for his failures. So he’s entitled to nothing until he starts putting some W’s on the board.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

look at that list

of teams you just mentioned we were competative against. Did you ever think you would say that this year? Not giving all the credit to Herm but he needs to get another year to see this rebuilding plan through. If there is no improvement the second half of this year or next year then get rid of him. Changing coaches halfway through a rebuild plan isn’t the solution.

Expectations
look at that list of teams you just mentioned we were competative against. Did you ever think you would say that this year?

Yes, I did…before this season I believed we would be competitive in most of our games this year (even though I didn’t necessarily believe it would translate to wins). So far we’ve been competitive in half of them. So the Chiefs are dramatically underperforming expectations. We gave up a 3 TD lead to Tampa that’s awful on the road at home. Our defense is one of the three worst in the NFL, down from last season. That’s not improvement.

Not giving all the credit to Herm but he needs to get another year to see this rebuilding plan through.

I don’t really give much credit at all to Herm. I give most of the credit to Chan Gailey, because the stuff he’s in charge of is the only part of the Chiefs that’s showing improvement. Defense has regressed, special teams is still awful, and game management is terrible. Know why? Because the same people are in charge of those this year that were in charge of them last year.

Changing coaches halfway through a rebuild plan isn’t the solution.

It works for me. Herm was a losing coach in New York and he’s a losing coach here. I’m not worried in the slightest about what will happen to the Chiefs if we can him, because I’m pretty sure his level of competence isn’t going to be too tough to replace. And if we fire Peterson as well we might even be able to find somebody better than Herm Edwards.

I support a 5 year plan...just cause I think it works

That way we can “be sure” that he’s not the right coach for us.

UC, you need to be more positive…I had some of the kool-aid and it is manna from heaven. (or was it the Jack Daniels mixed in…hmmmm)

As you can probably tell from my writings, I put a lot of importance on saying things that make me popular and well-liked. It’s much more rewarding that way than thinking for myself. :)

Million Dollar Question

If Herm and Carl were unemployed at the end of this year, would any team pick them up to operate at the capacity they work now? I think obviously Carl would be doing good to get a job managing a fast food resturaunt. And is there a high demand for Herman. I cannot think of an organization that would take him on as a head coach, or even a coordinator. Someone might hire him as a DB coach or scout? Hard to say. I think KC is the last stop for both!

I Could See Herm As A DB Coach

And probably a pretty good one. But I think watching him as a head coach is the epitome of the Peter Principle in action.

Herm

Surely your kidding or you don’t know anything about football. If Herm would have went to the locker room at half time of last two games the Chiefs would have three wins.

by FanSinceLen on Nov 4, 2008 3:07 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I gave Herm a chance, but he has lost some games we should have won.

This guy stinks as a coach, and is part of the reason we play all 1pm games. We used to have a top three offense every season, now we have a bottom three offense every year.
This guy can’t even get our defense to play well. The Rams took their garbage out and now can compete. That shows that if you change out a bad coach you can win right away.
I’ll never get over the 3rd and 1 pass on the four yard line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is what it is.

There is a very, very, short list of people at 1 Arrowhead Drive who’s job is safe. Herm and his coaching staff are not on that list. He needs to have a better record than last year to even consider bringing him back next year. Yeah it was nice to not get embarassed like we were against Oakland, Atlanta, Carolina, and Tennessee. But that was pretty stupid to get beat by Tampa the way we did. I say quit making excuses for the guy at the end of the day it is what it is. A winner wins and a loser loses.

Disagree

Herm will stick around in 2009. Clark’s given that impression the entire time. I’m not saying whether I agree or disagree with it, but Herm’s likely going to stick around.

That tells us a lot about what kind of an owner Clark Hunt is…a crappy one who has only a passing interest in whether his team is successful.

Newsflash

…Carl isn’t going anywhere. Worst case scenario he gets reshuffled. Lamar promised Carl he’d oversee the rebuilding of the stadium. Soooo, I don’t know how much that might appease fans if gets shuffled to another position in the org. (GM no more) and whether it will actually be one that doesn’t have personnel decisions.
You can take away the title but if he’s still there and makes the calls is it really a change?

So he’ll be around for at least 1-2 years in some sort of capacity.

Herm’s a talker. He BS’s with the best of them and his excusism’s never point at himself as the one that made a call that might be considered poor (unless it’s something off-the-field mediocre that sounds tough-like benching LJ). He’ll blame only being able to keep 5-6 players from the 32 currently playing (rookies and 2nd years) as well as blame it on injuries and not being able to really evaluate certain positions because of all that.
Lastly, he’ll blame it on needing more time for the team to come together and get used to playing at an NFL level. The game is so drastic between college and the NFL that it really doesn’t even look the same except that it does.

Herm -he’ll be around for another year of BS.

Clark takes after his Dad. You can ask anyone that knows him. They are eerily similar in looks as well as demeanor and business sense.

Carl is 32Mil under the cap…that makes up for A LOT of empty seats. Clark will look at the $$$ bottom line and it won’t look as bad as it seems when you see the empty seats at the stadium.
