The Good news regarding next years draft (Tim Tebow)

The Chiefs are still in position for a top 3 pick...  And guess what they don't have to use it on a QB.  So consider this we keep Thigpen and Croyle and draft a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. That QB should be Tim Tebow.  Chan can use him like he did Kordell Stewart.  Shit the guy could lineup as a runningback, a tightend or a QB.  Think about Tebow running the wildcat formation with Thigpen flanked out wide and Bradley's arm on the other side.  The defense is looking at 3 legit threats to throw the ball.  The possible offensive formations would be limitless.

So now that we don't need a QB in the 1st round what do we go for?  There are several stud Tackles coming out and we could sure use a middle linebacker.

The Tebow thing is interesting...

But do you really think Herm, Carl, etc would let Chan open up the playbook that much? Sure there were some gimmicks and wrinkles added yesterday. I just don’t think it will last long. It’s not Herm’s way, or Carl’s way. KC won’t stay with a gimmick offense. The wildcat is a phase and won’t last. The spread will help Thigpen now to develop. Sooner or later he will be comfortable in the regular set. Let’s not hope to become like the old “run and shoot” teams of the 90’s. Would be fun to watch though…for a while.

I would ask myself

why would Tebow come out his Junior year to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

Word

I would avoid all R1 QB’s and look at Harallel (maybe 2nd rounder) or Cullen Harper. We desperately need a MLB & RT and hope with our higher picks that we can take the cream of the crop from this incoming class

Line Would Be Preferable

But if the Chiefs end up with Rey Maualuga I’m not going to complain. Assuming he doesn’t have physical issues I think he’s the next great LB in the NFL.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

I'm always down for another Pac-10 baller.

While we’re at it, find away to get Dennis Dixon wearing red. Am I right Sonners fans?

Tebow can Teblow me

I am not sold on Tebow. Nothing short of seeing him perform in the NFL will likely change my opinion. I think he’s a great college QB (he’s been on my college fantasy team since his Freshman year)… but I still don’t think he’s going to be a great NFL QB and here’s why.

1. His passing skills are ok. Not great, just ok. His passing TD’s are inflated because of his threat to run it in. He scores a lot on his “fake run then jump pass it when the D sucks in”. Nobody in the NFL is going to bite on his run fakes like they do in college. He’s not that fast, he’s just fat.

2. I don’t know if it’s just because they don’t need him to throw, but he hasn’t really been throwing much this year. He has ONE game where he’s thrown for over 300 yards. He has three games of sub 200, one of which was less than 100. Three times this year he has carried the ball more times than he has completed passes. This is not going to translate in the NFL.

3. His rushing skills will not translate to the NFL. He is no Michael Vick or even Vince Young. No offense in the NFL is going to call designed run plays for him on a regular basis. At best he can hope to be like Steve Young or John Elway – but he doesn’t have the passing skills that either of those two.

I would value him in the late 2nd or 3rd round, but as it’s been mentioned in this thread – I don’t think he’ll go pro if he’s projected that late.

I’d much rather go for Graham Harrell. I used to bag on him because of his build and the system he plays in, but I’ve been watching him a lot lately. The guy is a pure passer. He can make every throw. He has the height – he just needs a little more girth. Even though his system is a “spread” type offense, he still takes snaps under center (unlike Daniel, Tebow and most other spread QB’s). If anybody watched the Texas v. Tx. Tech game the other night, you saw what I’m talking about. I didn’t believe it before, but I now think Harrell is a top 10 pick, maybe top 5.

I don’t know who else is going to be looking to get a 1st round QB next year either. Probably San Fran, Vikes, Jets (Favre won’t last forever), Lions (can Culpepper last?), Bucs (Garcia getting old, not many other solid options)? Panthers (Delhomme getting old)? Cardinals (Warner will likely retire and Leinart is a tosser).

Graham Harrell, Stafford, Bradford

In order are my top QB’s for the draft. Although I dont know if we will take a QB over LB and OL. The top 2 linebackers are game changers on any team.

by Shawn on Nov 3, 2008 1:43 PM CST reply actions

I think Stafford and Bradford are better

But they will probably go in the first round. So if we got Harrell in the second and addressed another need in the 1st round I’d be ecstatic.

At LB.

is james laurinaitis or ray maualuga better? Laurinatis isnt playing as well this year overall, but has stepped it up last 2 games.

I like

Pat White in a late round, I say we go defense with our first round pick and we can pick up White in probably the 4th.

by ComeSackMyQB on Nov 3, 2008 6:01 PM CST reply actions

I like him

for QB, I mean he’s got skillz for a late rounder. Whats your opinion, I havent seen much of him but I like his numbers and what I seen of him.

by ComeSackMyQB on Nov 3, 2008 6:37 PM CST reply actions

From what I've heard about him

He’s likely to be placed at WR like a Brad Smith-type.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 3, 2008 6:44 PM CST up reply actions

From What I seen

Saturday Im really liking Harrell Too.

by ComeSackMyQB on Nov 3, 2008 6:48 PM CST reply actions

Agreed

Still a little weary of the spread but Harrell seems to be a good player. If he can hit those outs well enough, then I think he’s got a good future.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 3, 2008 7:04 PM CST up reply actions

Do you think...

We could possibly pick up Crabtree in the first and Harrell in the second? I do think defense should be top priority but it would be something to think about because they already have that chemistry. I am very happy with the play of Bradley though. I think he was a very good aquisition.

by ComeSackMyQB on Nov 3, 2008 7:42 PM CST reply actions

I like Crabtree

Just not for the Chiefs in the top 5. WR just isn’t worth it IMO (although plenty will disagree). I think we gotta hit D-line or O-line in the first two rounds.

Guys

Harrell is a system qb. He will most likely turn out to be a career backup/journeyman qb because he runs the spread offense in college, the same offense that appalchian state used to beat michigan. VERY easy for a QB to look good in that system because college DBs have such a hard time covering it.

UT is turning out to be DB U and they STILL got torched by the Red Raiders, don’t you think that maybe it is more the system than the qb?

by Ben S on Nov 3, 2008 8:00 PM CST reply actions

More and more teams are running the spread in the NCAA

Does that mean we’ll see less QBs in the NFL? Nope. It means NFL teams will have to adapt to scout them correctly.

Just because he’s in a spread doesn’t mean he’s a system QB. With that logic, Tom Brady wouldn’t be good in any other offense.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 3, 2008 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

What I really mean

Is don’t dismiss certain QBs just because of the offense they run.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 3, 2008 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

Fair enough.

There are lots of QB’s from spread offenses that succeed in the NFL, however that is not always the case. A good example, other than Tom, is Drew Brees. However, when you draft a qb form a spread offense, the probability of him being a bust goes up. Many people say that it takes a franchise 5 years to fully recover from a first round bust, not exactly what we need at the moment.

Another thing I don’t like is that he has a first round receiver on his team as well. Combine that with the spread offense and the odds of you ranking him too high go through the roof.

One more point; out of all of the QB’s to come out of Texas Tech, how many have gone on to have successful NFL careers? Harrell isn’t the first to come out with the kind of statistics he has, not to mention Crabtree is one of the better WR’s to come from TT in a while anyways.

I am not saying that he won’t succeed in the NFL, I just think that the probability of Harrell being a bust is not worth a draft pick, especially where we are as a franchise. The reason why more teams are running the spread offense is because you can take a slightly above average QB and turn him into a superstar because hardly any college defenses can defend against it (see Texas). We just need to be 100% sure that we don’t draft one of these mediocre QB’s just because he looks good ripping up a defense where the DB’s have no idea who to cover.

The knock on Spread QB's

Is often that they don’t know how to play under center. They’ve usually operated from Shotgun their whole career. They take a while to develop because they have to learn 3-5-7 step drops and timing is often an issue. Usually in the spread it’s just stand back and find your target, timing isn’t as critical. So let’s look at a few things.

Harrell takes snaps under center, and does it well. Also, he understands timing like a mofo. If you watched the Texas game, he often got the ball out well before his receiver broke on his route.

Vince Young played almost exclusively from the Shotgun. Now his passing career hasn’t been great but it’s more due to his crap mechanics and poor decision making than the system transition.

Colt Brennan was dubbed a system QB, but from the sounds of it Jim Zorn thinks this guy is the real deal – many are now saying he was a steal with the late pick. He will develop behind Campbell and get his shot someday.

Drew Brees – as mentioned below by Ben

Last but not least – Tyler Thigpen. This guy ran Spread at Coastal Carolina. If you think he has a shot to make it with the Chiefs, then you shouldn’t overlook other guys that are Spread System QB’s.

When I look at a QB, I look at several things. Can make the throws? Can he throw an out (short, intermediate, deep) to the sideline that isn’t a rainbow floater? Can he throw a deep ball? Does he lock on to his primary receiver and force it in to coverage? As a corollary, does he check down well? Does he make good decisions with the ball (i.e. throw it away instead of forcing it or taking a sack)?

I think a lot of this is evident regardless of the system that they play in.

I am not sure this has been said yet

but if the Chiefs were to get Tebow, there could be one problem; He is left handed and we would have Sackintosh protecting his blind side.

Hey man

You might want to check your PC…seems like your same posts are getting repeated multiple times. It posted the same reply 4 times so you might want to check that you don’t have a virus.
Or…you might be a bot thats posting which in that case you can’t even read this.

Just keep matriculating the ball down the field boys.
