If You Were Carl...

...Then what would you do?

In a season where our beloved Chiefs have won only one game so far, we have all heard much advice from one another. This ranges from a common goal to fire Herm, to not so popular ideas like converting Quinn Gray into a defensive end (thanks Parade, I'm always open for something new!). We talk about firing Gunn, getting rid of Herm, trading LJ, benching Sackintosh, and many other issues. However, never have we heard the complete package. So, it is I who places the burden upon you, the reader, to come up with your own personal remedy for the Chiefs. So, to get things started, I will begin with my own.

First off, I would not fire Herm until the end of the year. Despite disagreeing with many things that he has done in the past, I feel as though it is unfair to fire a coach with the personel that we have. However, he would be on an extremely tight leash.  There is only so long that a coach can go on in the NFL losing as many games as Herm has, and he is certainly approaching that mark. However, what I would like to see (although not likely at all) is Herm retained as the head of our college scouting department. I am sure a lot of people on this site will disagree, but I personally feel as though Herm has brought in a lot of talent through the draft. It is not very often that a 7th round safety can come in and be a starter by his second year, no matter the quality of his play or the players at his position. That is impressive.

However, I am not so easy with Gunther Cunningham. I personally would like to see the Old Fun' and Gunn fired immediatly. I am well aware of the injuries we have, as well as the rookies we are playing. However, our defense come short on so many fundamentals that it makes me dizzy just thinking about it. Poor cantainment. Poor tackling. Vanilla playcalling. This list can go on and on, but because of the time it would waste that could be used to find a new (and better) DC, I will leave it at that.

As for personel, there are only a few changes I would make. However, I would like to point out that as fans, we do not get to watch practice, making our evaluation of players that much more difficult resulting in assumptions that would make us look like idiots in front of coaches, so I will do my best to keep it short. But, the first move I would make is to have Pollard and Morgan sharing playing time. Bernie has failed to make as many plays as you would hope from your safety, and for being a big hitter (which, I must admit, he is starting to live up to), he still only makes those big hits 8 yards down the field. Morgan, on the other hand, seems to constantly making plays near the line of scrimmage when the opponent runs the ball, and I have yet to see him miss a tackle. Now, I must admit that I have never seen Dajuan make a play on a pass, but judging from his play around the line of scrimmage, can he really be much worse than Burnt Pollard?

I would love to say that Richardson should start over Macintosh, but like I mentioned above, dont you think that they would give him a shot over the sack master by now if he was even close to an upgrade? I would be much more open to atleast giving Herb Taylor a shot on the right side, but I suspect that maybe it is his age that is getting in his way from making the switch to the right side in the NFL. I could be wrong, just my take on things.

That is about it for the changes I would make to the depth chart. There are a few areas that obviously need improvement, but I think that free agency and the draft will more than likely be better suitors for those positions. I know that many on this site feel as though this would be a good idea given the situation he is in at the moment, but I would love to see Julius Peppers in a Chiefs uniform next year. Maybe it's our cap space, maybe it's that he runs with DB's in practice, or maybe it's because he is just so fricken' good in Madden year in and year out!

This would basically be my remedy for this year. As most of you may have noticed, not a lot has changed this year. For me, the significant changes would come next year, pending on what happens for the rest of this year. Anyways, please share your thoughts on what the Chiefs should do, I would love to hear them.

Oh, and two more things:

1) I would start a petition on AP for a daily babe to help everyone get there mornings started!

2)I would fire myself (Carl) after hiring myself (Ben) as the GM for the next 20 years at 5 Million a year before retiring to Tuscany. Ah, the life.

The thing I see is

Not firing a coach based on the personel we have, Herm is the one who evaluated that talent? At the beginning of the season everbody, talking heads and all wanted to give Herm the credit for personel decisions, as he has pushed Carl out of that role. Now we have a sieve on the rightside, all on the HC himself. He decides who suits up, and who sits. We went on losing without making a change to the offense until it was to late.

So you wanted Damon Huard running the spread?

We have no indication that he would even have been capable of doing that. They started running the Spread in Thigpens second start (and I still don’t think its going to be succesful long term). How much quicker did you want them to change it?

by ChiefDJ on Nov 28, 2008 10:18 AM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The only reason it was changed is because Thigpen was struggling in our original offense.

and we had nobody else to run the offense. We were forced to do it. I would give credit to Chan for doing his homework not Herm.

I think the whole offense struggled with the offense

How many games did we

Really need to lose before we stopped the r2-p2? Everyone including my kid could see it was not going to work. Watching the offense this season was like watching the 07 offense all over again, we changed the offense, no personel changes, and started scoring points, hmmm.

If I was Carl?

I would take a page from Marty’s past and resign based on not meeting my self imposed 5 year plan from 1989 after 19 years. (and walk away in shame knowing I didn’t get the job done)

You Beat Me To It :)

Carl Peterson’s had this job for 19 years and he hasn’t come remotely close to meeting his alleged goal for 15 of them. If he had any integrity at all he’d have stepped down as GM after signing Dick Vermeil, or at the latest before hiring Herm Edwards.

If I were Carl, that would probably mean I wouldn’t care a hell of a lot what got done in the offseason with any of the players because the Chiefs winning a Super Bowl just wasn’t that important to me as long as the fans are willing to pay good money to watch mediocre teams.

So I’m glad I’m not Carl.

Fire myself

then write myself a bigass severance check!

OK... Here goes nothin'

If I were Carl Peterson, I would…

(after seeing what Bill Parcells was able to do) retire and give a phone call to Marty Schottenheimer and BEG him to take over as GM. So now this post becomes “If you were Marty…”

If I were Marty Schottenheimer I would…

- Have a nice long talk with Herm Edwards and basically say, “You know, Herm… Theres NO WAY a coach can lose as much as you have and keep their job. I can’t have that…. I’m sorry.” And slide a box of Kleenex across the table.

- I would make a phone call to a Bill Cowher and talk him into re-forming/ coaching the Chiefs into a dynasty. Sign him to a 5 year deal.

- I would KEEP Gunther Cunningham (Sorry Mr. UCrawford). With Bill Cowher being a TRUE defensive Coach, if Gun was to fail, we’d have Bill to fall back on.

- I would KEEP Chan Gailey. Re-uniting Gailey and Cowher might not be such a bad idea.

- I would KEEP Larry Johnson… Now, I know a lot of you want him out of KC after this year, but I believe the guy deserves one last chance. I would make it so that if he’s caught slippin’ in ‘09, he’s benched for the rest of the season and let go of by March 2010.

- I would re-sign only 3 players; Jarrad Page, Jon McGraw, and Adrian Jones.

- On the Depth Chart I would have a few changes… I would entertain the idea that DaJaun Morgan gets the nod over Benard Pollard. And hopefully Pollard and Morgan give us a great competition in the off-season. Next, Damion McIntosh would be nothing short of a back-up. Brandon Albert is our guy. We all know about Brian Waters. Rudy Niswanger gets his last year as our Center to prove whether or not he is our Center of the future. Herb Taylor will be developed as our RT and we will stop baby sitting Barry Richardson. The rest of the Offense is just fine. Bradley, Bowe, and TG or formidable. Tyler is looking good and could compete for the starting job next year. L.J. is our starter. He just IS. You NEED that every down back, even if he isn’t your only back. Mike Cox has shown that he is a progressive FB.

(Our Defense is horrible right now.. BUT it’s still few Free Agents/ Draft Picks away from being a force in the NFL)

- Then comes Free Agency: Being Marty (and Bill) the “Youth Movement” would NOT be done away with, yet it wouldnt be SO extreme. This team needs some veterans in so many different positions. And hopefully Marty would realize that granted Arrowhead needs a makeover, we still need fans to fill Arrowhead 1st. Therefore… We sign 3 players; Bart Scott or Jonathan Vilma (depending on which one has highest cost… I’d rather have Scott though). Then I would sign O-Lineman Marc Colombo to strengthen our line… And last but definitely not least, with all the free cap space… I’d do whatever it takes to get Julius Peppers in Kansas City. It’s a long shot, and Carolina just might tag him, but who knows.

- Then we have the Draft… And to add to the Linebacker mix, (because we would already have our pass rushing DE in Peppers :::dreaming:::) we will pick up either Ray Maualuga or James Laurinaitis to sure up our LB corps. And because we can never be too sure, we NEED to draft a QB. Maybe not in the 1s round, but MAYBE in the 2nd or 3rd… and IF he decides to enter the league a year early, Heisman prospect, Colt McCoy should be our pick. Every other pick will be devoted to OL, S, WR, CB, and DL.

Now, with the addition of Peppers, Scott (or Vilma), Maualuga (or Laurinaitis) + the rest of the ’09 Draft picks, and with existing players (Bowe, Bradley, Albert, D.J., Flowers, etc etc) we can keep the Youth Movement mentality but in a much better mind set and a much higher talent level.

::::Remember this is all make believe::: This willl probably never happen. Maybe except for the ‘09 Draft prediction, but other than that, this is only a Chiefs fan’s wet dream.

Sucks.

Only as a backup...

I think he’s done ok as a RG… Granted he’s no Will Shields, we still need some depth at OL. I would examine our RT/RG situation and see where Herb and Barry Richardson would suit best… Also considering if we signed Colombo.

by ROC 27 on Nov 28, 2008 12:44 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

why?

Why the heck would you keep Gunther? There is absolutley no reason, He takes over the linebackers position coach and they get worse even when they were all healthy, he doesn’t make adjustments what so ever, Against Atlanta we started off keeping Michael Turner locked down and then Atlanta made an adjustment and Gunther didn’t, and we got burned, notice every time that we have gone into the half tied or winning and we have lost it is because the Offensive cordinators of the opposing teams made adjustments and Gun did not, don’t tell me that Herm didn’t make the adujustments, because the whole defensive staff is in charge and gunther is the speacilaist and should have the capabilites to do what he is suppoosed to do, and he doesn’t and every body on the defensive staff should be gone

by IamtheGreatest on Nov 28, 2008 4:32 PM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm with you

Like I said, I think Gunther has to go. Our problems are not only with the players, it is with the scheme and coaching as well.

by Ben S on Nov 28, 2008 6:09 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

True but the sheme has nothing to do with Gunther

and more to do with Herm wanting to run the cover 2. Gunther isn’t a great D-coordinator but he is more successful when we run a more traditional 4-3 rather than zone.

Indecision is the key to flexibility

by cmpotter on Nov 28, 2008 6:34 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If He Isn't A Great Defensive Coordinator

Then why would we care if he’s replaced?

There are plenty of mediocre coordinators available who can run more than the one scheme they like (Gunther apologists’ excuse du jour) and can work with other coaches. Why not give somebody else a shot and see if maybe we can find a great defensive coordinator? Because Gunther hasn’t shown anything in the last 10 years to indicate that he’ll ever be a great defensive coordinator again (assuming he ever was).

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

by UCrawford on Nov 28, 2008 6:47 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Exactly.

If we are alright with mediocrity, then we might as well hire me, because I am as likely to take this team to a superbowl as a mediocre DC will. Actually. You cannot win a Super Bowl without at the very least an above average defense, something we aren’t even close to right now. The only thing we have going for ourselves right now is turnovers, and not the type you can credit to an exotic defense like Baltimore. Ours come from players making plays on a pass, and that is it.

by Ben S on Nov 28, 2008 8:41 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not a Gunther apologist

Just stating that the scheme is not his fault. He is just running with what Herm wants. He was successful his first run in KC because we had a lot of talent and was able to blitz every down if he wanted. I don’t care if he stays or goes to be honest. If Herm goes the staff minus Gailey should be gone as well.

hermie hermie

I’d rather have marty brought in as a coach..Cowher won a superbowl yes, but Marty isn’t going to accept a gm job..Why is everyone keep on bringing up this notion that Marty wants to be a gm? Completely erroneous..Marty if he ever does come back will be as a coach..And I think if the chiefs made him the right offer he would come back..Marty or Cowher would be my top picks or someone younger that can actually coach..Bringing in Herm was well intentioned except that Carl forgot to check whether the coach could actually competently coach..I knew we we’re doomed when Herm came in dissing our amazing offense..Fucking idiot..Hey Herm how many games have you won in the past year? Oh yeah 1..Get your butt out of KC..I miss how Arrowhead used to be special

by CALIFAN1986 on Nov 29, 2008 1:13 AM CST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think that Marty has made it clear....

That he is not looking to coaching again. BUT when he gets asked about being a General Manager, he hesitates and leaves everyone hanging. THATS why I say he’d be a GM before considering coaching.

by ROC 27 on Nov 29, 2008 12:45 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am totally on board with Marty becoming our GM

Could not possibley be worse than Peterson, and maybe he can orchestrate our team like Parcells is in Miami. I know it is a long shot, but I think his love of KC would help his decision making, where as the only thing Peterson loves is money.

by TheQ on Nov 29, 2008 12:50 PM CST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh yea

I’m tired of people always talkin about how herm should have one more year..What about last year? This guy is in charge of the coaching and player personnel, and is in charge to put a product on the field that can actually compete. I realize we are young but honestly that isn’t an excuse when we we’re 4-12 last year and Herm shouldn’t realized that team needed some serious help..His decision about Brodie Croyle is 100% his fault..Herm admit it for once it is your fault..Your the manager, you make the decision, us fans live with them, your at fault..

Herm is not the coach we want..Even once the talent gets better, we’re still going to watch this buffoon try to make the games close..Admit it, the guy hates to win big..He hates to even have a big lead..Just watch his game plan and his coaching..I’d take Lane Kiffin any day over Herman Edwards

your right

we are not running what gunther is supposedly good at, and that makes my point on how he can’t adjust, he’s not good so get over it
