Matt Cassel
Some of the speculation I've heard regarding Matt Cassel is that, especially since Brady is not likely to be 100% until 2010, the Patriots may consider slapping the franchise player tag on him. He would be doing reasonably well in New England, considering their penchant for paying even practice squad players above average, but I'm sure there are at least five or six teams that are eyeing him closely right now. I'm not completely sold on Thigpen's versatility within other systems (and would love to be proven wrong), and I'm not interested on burning any first-day draft picks on this position.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Arrowhead Pride's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Arrowhead Pride writers or editors.

We've Already Got Thigpen
And he’s performed decently. So I don’t think Cassel’s worth signing for us even if he didn’t get franchised because we’d have to pay him starter’s dollars. With a tag, no way.
Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

They won't put the franchise tag on Cassell
The franchise tag for a QB would be outrageous (takes the average of the top salaries at that position). There’s no way they would pay Cassell near what the Bradys, Mannings or Roethlesburgers of the league are making. That would be plain foolish.

If you tag someone
only to retain them for a trade, are you taking a salary cap hit? I didn’t think it involves a signing bonus so if someone’s franchised just to be traded I thought they were safely off the books? I thought thats how it works and providing so, you can count on the Pats tagging Cassel and trading him out of the division

The Pats can franchise Cassell, but he has to sign the franchise tender for it to count against the Pats cap.
THey can franchise him and then deal him with no penalty as long as Cassell doesn’t sign the tender.

I have been wondering why we will change our offense?
He has been fairly good in the spread so why change it? It worked for St. Louis for 5 or 6 years so it has been proven that you can win with it. So why are people saying that it will have to change.

We'd be committing
Around 6 years and $60+ million to him. Are you ready to do that?

Agree X 3
Our QBs are doing well, but with a better O-Line, they could do much better, if not great. We just can’t tell until the line improves. A 60 million dollar rookie or veteran isn’t worth a dime on IR.
In addition to solid line play, 60 million can get us sacks which equals less opposing team points. Two, three or even four difference makers on O-Line and DE/LB will equal WINS.

Cassel
to me is a reflection of the system. Even Brady to a certain degree. New England has proven there the best team in the league at developing QB’s. Whomever they draft they’re going to get the most out of their abilities. Not to discredit Cassel, but if he or Brady went to others teams there’s a possibility they may have never been starting QB material

How can you say they are the best team in the league at developing QBs?
Tom Brady is a great QB. Is that a result of the coaching he received, or just his natural ability? A little of both I’m sure, but the things that make him great, his intensity and leadership ability are his natural talent he has always had.
Can anyone really say Cassell is a great QB? I mean he has great players all around him with the Patriots. It would really be pretty tough for him to completely fail. Would he do as well with a developing team? I think not.

Dude
How can you NOT say they’re the best team in the league @ developing QB’s? If Peyton Manning went down for the year you think Sorgi could step in and play as well as Cassel? No chance in hell. The only team that would get honorable mention here is Washington under Zorn’s tutelage. But other than that there’s no team that brings there QB’s along better than NE. You’re practically agreeing with me by saying Cassel wouldn’t be as good on another team………and its not the role players so much as it’s the coaching who put those players in a position to succeed. Again, how can you NOT say they’re the best team in the league @ developing QB’s!?
