What are the Signs of a Bad Coach?

A lot of people will say the biggest factor in evaluating a head coach is the wins to losses. I agree with that. Mostly.

A losing team is not always the coach's fault. Losses can stem from multiple sources.

1. An inefficient GM who screws up in off-season acquisitions. (Who here thinks Carl Peterson is a good GM?)

2. Players who aren't doing there job. Some have said that if you have players who are making mistakes on the field it's the coach's fault for not preparing them for their game.

In my working experience my boss sets the general scheme for what we are doing then he expects me to execute the plan and get as many customers as possible. He doesn't stand over my shoulder and tell me "hey this is how you type" or "hey you should stand like this when meeting a customer." That's my job and if he told me every little thing that's micromanagement. If anyone has ever had a micromanager you know how badly that effects your production.

NFL players are fully grown adults who are getting paid millions of dollars to do their job. If you think they just sit and drool on themselves while the coaching staff tells them how to play the game then your crazy. These guys know football, they know their body, they have to have their own work ethic and their own desire to win.

Sure at the high school and college level there is a lot of player development going on and it's important. But at the pro level ussually the player's got it or he doesn't. Experience is important but you can't coach experience and you can't coach talent.

I've always believed the signs of a badly coached team is the players committing stupid penalties and turning the ball over in ridiculous amounts.

We are the seventh least penalized team in the NFL and are +9 in turnovers. That's not only acceptable that's really good.

I've never been a coach and I've never been a player but I have been a student of the game and a persistent fan of the Chiefs even when it's painful. This isn't a popular stance right now because we are losing. It would be really easy to rant and rave and say how bad Herm is and how he doesn't know a football from a head of lettuce. But that's not what I believe. I think he's a good coach. Time will tell. If we are this bad next year I'll be the first to say fire Herm.

I'd go on but I have to head out into the real world.

Signs of a bad coach...

Chokes his players.

Attempts to cover up the murder committed by one of his players on another player.

Lies on his resume.

Gets drunk with coed’s after road games.

I’m sure there are more signs I’m missing.

1. Signed by Carl Peterson
2. Makes no second half adjustments
3. Plays to win the games
4. Wears yellow tinted glasses
5. Assumes no responibility for losses
6. Runs a power back from the shotgun with no fullback
7. Runs the ball up Niswanger’s butt
9. Wears red on Sunday without being Tiger Woods
10. Isn’t named Cowher

Correction

Number 3 should be plays to “win” the games (quotation marks being used to put emphasis on Herm’s tendency to sit on a lead with risk-averse behavior until he coughs that lead up…“winning” as opposed to actually winning). :)

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

I know you really aren't serious

but I’ll refute them anyways

1. So Marty and Vermeil were both bad coaches?
2. Wow, I didn’t know you were in the locker room at half time, next time I’ll let you borrow my digital recorder, so you can prove it.
3. Okay, all coaches play to win games
4. uhh, what does that have to do with football
5. I would agree with that but Herm has assumed some responsibility. He just doesn’t say “Oh man it’s all my fault fire me.”
6. Tell that to the Patriots.
7. Shortest distance from point A to point B is a straight line…
8. Do you need to go back to first grade to learn how to add 1+7=8
9. I guess I’m a bad coach to because I wear red on Sunday and I’m not Tiger Woods
10. Bellicheck, Dungy, Lombardi, need I go on?

I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am.

Can you expound on #5?

We’d really like to know the “some” responsibility Herm’s taken.

Quotes or links please…I’m really curious to where he’s actually said anything that resembles personal responsibility.

He did take credit/responsibility for benching LJ, but no one is saying that made a difference in us losing (see last game as proof).

Bill Parcell’s: "You are what your record says you are."

When you kill two decent teams?

When you do not condition your players for the games. When you have a revolving door for players. Injury history, anything to do with coaching?

I couldn't agree more with your post

and very well said.

Coaches get blamed all the time because they are the easiest scapegoat. It’s hard to blame one person on a football team because it’s a collection of a bunch of guys. But there are a lot of holes on this team that have everything to do with the players. Our defense should be better and I will put that on Herm, but they are YOUNG as hell! I think we are a big defensive playmaker away from being a lot better.

I think your best point was the signs of a poorly-coached team are turnovers and penalties. We don’t committ a lot of either. I’m with you, give him one more season to see if this thing turns around, it’s not as easy as we want it to be.

thanks

the important thing right now is that no one expected us to be good this year and we are showing improvement even with all of these guys playing on D we’ve never heard of before.

I strive to be the person my dog thinks I am.
