I don't care whether Matt Stafford, Peyton Manning or John Elway is available when the Chiefs make their first draft pick next year. Unless one of those guys can get after the quarterback, the Chiefs must pass them up in order to get a pass rusher.

and once we get one, develop him and he turns into a probowler, we can immediately get rid of him for draft picks.

Successfully?

I have read several things written by Vikings fans expressing concern that they were at so-and-so watering hole and saw Allen tying one on…

What's The Star's beef with Thigpen?

As another ‘the’ entity, The PARADE would like to know why Whitlock and these excerpts from the aforementioned article are bustin on bones?

“We’re all waiting for Tyler Thigpen to turn into a pumpkin but it hasn’t happened yet. In a perfect world, the Chiefs would do better for their starting QB next season.

Tyler Thigpen isn’t perfect but he’s proving to be a servicable NFL quarterback.”

Seriously, ‘The Star’ what’s your deal? Blogger, Fantasy hype backlash? We mean, we don’t want to believe the hype either, but jeez, “serviceable?” God you still have a crush on Jeff George? Feeling burnt by the Brodie-Hype? Yeh, us too.

Relax, enjoy some Celestial Seasoning’s tea, take your shoes off, Bones has got us covered until the off-season…maybe…

I see you're tea-bagging it there

Nice…I’m glad we never have to meet face to face.

I think we’re all too used to mediocrity from that position since Green vacated it. Thigpen is “serviceable” but it’s not like he’s putting up probowl numbers. He’s competent and he’s shown consistancy. I’d like to see him finish the season with the same averages and then I’d say the position is his to lose

by rdub on Nov 17, 2008 3:01 PM CST reply actions

uh
it’s not like he’s putting up probowl numbers

Actually, over the last 4 games, he’s pretty close

Thiggy – (projecting last 4 games to 16 game season) vs. Manning (last year Pro Bowler)

Rating – 96.4% to 98.0%

Attempts – 560 to 515

Completions – 340 to 337

% – 60.7 to 65.4

TD’s – 32 to 31

INT’s – 4 to 14

Do I think Thigpen is the next Manning? No.
Could he be? Yes
Have his last 4 games been more than “competent”? yes
If he extends his performance the last 4 games to the next 6, it most definitely is his job to lose.

Note

when researching those stats, I noticed that NFL.com still has a Vikings portrait for Thigpen =)

But they have switched Allen to a Viking…and we got Thigpen before the 2007 season… =(

No respect…

I Won't Shoot As High As Manning

But I don’t think it’s unbelievable that he could develop into a top ten QB. We’re not going to know for sure for awhile, though.

Serious Questions for you UCrawford

do you think we could win a Super Bowl in the next 5 years with a top 10 QB?

or do we need, say, a top 5 QB?

If it’s the latter, shouldn’t we look to try and draft him this season, when we could conceivably get our choice of QB’s in the draft?

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 17, 2008 6:19 PM CST up reply actions

Serious Answer

Yes, I think we can win a Super Bowl with a top 10 QB. Dilfer won one. Eli Manning last year wasn’t a top 5 QB and the Giants won. And history’s got plenty of teams that had great QBs who never won (Marino, Fouts, Moon).

Winning Super Bowls is about balance and having good performers in all areas of your team, not just having a great player at one position. And if Thigpen is able to perform at his current level through the rest of this season and build on it next year, then yes…I think we’re capable of winning a Super Bowl with him at the helm. Whether he’s going to develop or not is the main question but at this point I think he looks promising. But I also agree with you that we should look to draft a QB this year to develop as well…not putting all of our eggs in one basket so to speak (because QBs get hurt, or Thigpen may end up not developing…my personal preference would be to grab Graham Harrell because I think he could be a great NFL QB). So I’m not really worried about the Chiefs at the moment because we’ve got a pretty promising QB prospect for now in Thigpen and hopefully we’ll get another in the draft who can take over in a few years if Thigpen isn’t the answer.

Now if your question is do I think that the Chiefs will make it to a Super Bowl while Thigpen is our starting QB, my answer to that would be “Not as long as Herm and Carl are running this team”. I’ve got some faith in the players we have on hand. I’ve got no faith in the coaching staff or front office to get a championship-caliber performance out of them.

How good could Thigpen be

if he had protection? If all he really had to worry about were his reads.

by Eric Allen on Nov 17, 2008 6:45 PM CST reply actions

Maybe Very Good

Only way we’re going to find that out is for the Chiefs to improve the o-line. Unfortunately for us we’ll be competing with the Rams for the top pick next year and they’re definitely going to be looking for a left tackle next season (since Pace is injured again and possibly out for the year).

by UCrawford on Nov 17, 2008 6:48 PM CST up reply actions

But

Would Thigpen thrive in a more traditional offense?

by Joel Thorman on Nov 17, 2008 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

Keep rolling him out regardless

that may be how he finds his rythym. Sure there will be times you have to line up under center, just keep plays between the 20’s to his strengths. He has the arm, use him like Donkey QB’s have been used, it only helps our run game.

by Eric Allen on Nov 17, 2008 7:08 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly

No clue. But as long as he’s doing well in this offense, scoring points and avoiding turnovers like he has I’m not overly worried about whether or not we’re running a “pro” offense, per se. After all, Herm’s idea of a pro offense is to run the ball up Niswanger’s butt until his running back breaks down.

It's Like The Old Saying We Had In The Army

“If you have a stupid plan and it keeps working, then it’s not a stupid plan”. And right now the offense the Chiefs are running is about the only thing on the team that is working.

Good thing we have

Our left tackle. I just do not want a well we picked up so and so in the fufth round, he will protect our franchise QB.

by Eric Allen on Nov 17, 2008 7:05 PM CST up reply actions

Personally

If there’s a standout offensive tackle on the board in the first round when we draft I hope we grab him. Even if he ends up playing right tackle for us. It’s not like we couldn’t use him and you never know if he might end up being an even better fit for us at LT than Albert (even though I think Albert has done well). We simply can’t allow the line to be neglected like it has, and there’s not going to be much in free agency for offensive linemen to rebuild with.

Basically

I’m saying if the best player available is an offensive tackle, we should take the offensive tackle.

I'd be more inclined to wait until the 2nd

I don’t think the talent drop off for a RT would be too great. We have to get a pass rusher. Bad.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 18, 2008 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

Pass Rushers

I’m fine with them getting a DE. But considering how often QBs go down with serious injuries on this team we have to protect the team’s investment. The Chiefs have neglected the offensive side of the ball with their first-day picks for years and now we’ve got a line that’s got one starter we can probably count on for the long term…Branden Albert (Waters is playing well, but he’s on the wrong side of 30, the rest are fringe starters at best). Whether Thigpen’s the answer at QB or whoever we draft next year, we’re risking the long-term future of this franchise by not putting good players out there on the line to protect him…we’ve been fortunate so far that he hasn’t taken a hit that will seriously hurt him, but that luck will eventually run out at the pace the Chiefs are going (we’re tied for 8th most sacks allowed and most of the teams ahead of us have had injury issues with their QBs).

http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?offensiveStatisticCategory=TEAM_PASSING&season=2008&seasonType=REG&d-447263-o=2&conference=ALL&tabSeq=2&role=TM&d-447263-p=1&d-447263-s=PASSING_SACKED&d-447263-n=1

We won’t win games next year unless we get a pass-rusher. We won’t win games for many years unless we can keep our QBs from getting killed. Thigpen’s the first young QB the Chiefs have found in the last 20 years that looks like a legitimate NFL starter and if he gets seriously hurt we’re back to watching 30-10 blowouts next season with Herm Ball.

I hate our history as of late

With drafting D-lineman. It scares me almost as bad as Carl or Herm drafting a first round QB. We have drafted quite a few D-lineman, and none of them are standouts at this point.

by Eric Allen on Nov 18, 2008 8:35 PM CST up reply actions

I Hate Carl's Drafting History Period

I don’t trust him or Herm in any way, shape or form to draft a complete football team. For 19 years every team that Carl Peterson has assembled has had at least one easily identifiable fatal flaw that compromised either the offense, defense or special teams (and, on occasion, all three). He’s simply not capable of building a Super Bowl winner no matter how much “rebuilding” he does or how many years you give him. If he had a clue of how to do it, he’d have done it by now.
