Why Tyler "Bones" Thigpen is a better candidate for Quarterback of the future then you know who was.

I know there are going to be people who say that this is a small sample size.  I am not annointing him a HOFer because I already did that.

When Tyler does pan out (and B Albert and, J Charles and...) this is by far better than Walker from Dallas to the Vikes trade. I want to be remembered as well for calling it out.

I am just sayin.

The main reason for the small sample is this is just games started  and thats all we have for Bones. It is kinda funny though that Brodie could not make five complete starts prior to going down with injury. All of this after the Jump (ps I could not get the whole spreadsheet to fit and it looks best when viewing wide {see button on left; yes that is a shameless plug for front page})

Stats Taken Here Brodie & Bones

The stats that are cut off are Rushing Brodie 5/16 with a 3.2yds avg per rush and game and Bones is 16/131 with an 8.19yds per rush and 26.2 per game (better than LJ for the last month :)

Now lets be realistic Brodie looked good against Peyton in his first start.  Bones looked pathetic against the Falcons.  Or did they.   Brodie took no chances in that game.  We had no LJ and it was his first start so Herm had a very conservative game plan.  Bones was disgusting in the first half up until to the two minute warning.  Yes he did have LJ which worked to his disadvantage.  Hear me out 4th and goal LJ runs a sweep to the left and is supposedly stopped on the one inch.  We score we are down ten (if the kicker not the one who should never be named had done his job it would only be seven) Bowe doesn't trip on astro turf in a dome, Bones doesn't press, no pick six. We lose by three.  Ok thats a stretch. Statistically Bones has dominated the incumbent.  That was Brodie's best game in the NFL as a starter.  The oxymoron to that Bones worst start was his first start.  I would much rather have someone on the ascension then someone who had platued in his first NFL start (forget that he can't stay healthy).

Let's Not Underrate The Falcons Game

It was epicly bad. Thigpen performed horribly throughout that game and in no way looked like an NFL starter. That game, however, appears to have been the exception and not the rule and overall I agree that he looks like a more legitimate QB prospect than Croyle. Thigpen’s mobile, he’s durable, he spreads the ball among his receivers, he’s got a strong arm and (most importantly) he completes passes deep. Croyle could only do about half those things.

based on the Falcons game

he was destined for the glue factory

I too agree that he looks like a more viable future QB. I try to temper my expectations every week, reminding myself that he is still basically a rookie. He has a handful of starts under his belt and he wasn’t projected to be anything special coming out of college. He should still be learning and growing for seasons to come.

I hope he gets his 1st win sometime soon.

If He Doesn't Get A Win Soon

It won’t be because he was doing much wrong. The defense is what’s killing the team.

agreed

The defense is dilapidated

Margin of Loss (MOL)

Is this what it’s come to? (sad grin) Who has the smallest MOL?

I would not have guessed that Thigpen has a lower percent complete. His lack of INTs is impressive. And if I recall, his most recent INT came on a desperation play of some sort, where he had to give it a chance.

Good table and info, CA — which is where I’m working this week.

I thought the same

MOL the only reason I included it was we are losing to better teams on average by less. All things being equal, which they are not, becasue our defense was much (understatement) better than this year.
However statistically Brodie faced better defenses over all.

I think the completion percentage is skewed because of the Detroit game for Bordie it’s unrealistic to think he would have held that had he not been injured.

True on the Picks too

As bad as the Atlanta game was

he looked better in the Atlanta game than in the Raiders game the week before.

I was at the home opener, and I swear, the only thing that kept him from throwing two pick sixes inside our 20 yard line was the fact that the Raider defenders were surprised by the ball…because they were covering AN EMPTY ZONE…seriously, Thig-Newton threw one I can remember vividly – I don’t know it it was a route error or what, but there was not a guy in red on that side of the field, and he threw it to the right, hitting an Oakland LB (who was standing at about our 10 yard line) right in the chest…you could see that the defender was thinking “WTF?”

I have to say I am surprised how good he has played

To watch him in the preseason, he was so innaccurate! I thought I could throw a more accurate pass than he could. As the games have progressed, I was waiting for him to revert back, but to his credit he keeps on making some incredible throws. I think that we have spread the field, simplified his reads, and allowed him to play more on instinct. There is a rythmn to this offense, more uptempo and dynamic. It allows all of our Offensive guys to do better. We are not trying to assert our dominance by ramming the ball down your throat anymore (since we can’t do it anyway), and we are not asking guys to hold blocks for a long time, or asking our wide receivers to get open in zone or double coverage. Playing to our players strengths is what Chan said he would do. He has been a man of his word.

Absolutely Agree

The offense for the last month has been enjoyable to watch and actually keeps us in the games. It’s a hell of a lot better than watching us try to run the ball on first downs while we’re down by two or three possessions.

So now if we could only work the same magic on the defense

It seems as if we can never get all 3 phases playing good at the same time. I would have to say that the defense has definitely dealt with more than their fair share of injuries though. So how do you play to the strengths of players who were selling used cars a week ago?

Tackles = Commission

and for every yard gained is deducted from the commission, but every yard behind the LOS is a 10% bonus!

Forgot to add

No tackle = no pay!

Sadly

The NFL doesn’t allow contracts to be structured that way. :)
