does Thigpen allow KC to draft other needs?
After watching him vs. Atlanta, I was ready to cut Thigpen right there. Now, he's put a few games together, and we have hope that a seventh round pick is our QB of the future? I'm starting to think that we can now pass on a QB as our first pick. I think we need a pass rusher. I'm reading about Orakpo being a beast. I'm sure he's going to fly up the charts after scouts see him lift, and run.
So the quesiton remains, do we pass on Stafford, or the other QBs and go D?

Is Thigpen the quarterback of the future? I don’t know. Five games is not enough time to judge a player. Regardless of what happens, we need to at least bring someone in to a) compete for the starting job and b) develop for the future. If Thigpen wins the starting job, more power to him, but we can’t just hand it to him on a silver platter without making him earn it.

Erik Ainge
I’d like us to get Erik Ainge from the Jets. He was a 4-year starter at Tennessee under Phillip Fulmer, who recently has shown his incompetence. He never really had a good system to flourish in in college, and from when I watched, had most of the tools to become a solid QB. He’s 4th on the NY depth chart, so we could probably get him for free. Maybe Chase Daniel too?

Watched Ainge quite
a bit in college. I always thought he had the skills to develop into a solid NFL QB.

Nah
Get Orakpo. The man is a beast. I could see him averaging 10-12 sacks throughout his career.

What's everyones thoughts
on how Thigpen played against New Orleans? This was the only game I’ll miss all year because I had prior engagements and I was bummed I didn’t get to watch the game. Did he play well like the Tyler we’ve seen last 3 games or are some starting to believe its a fluke? Only highlight I saw was of his interception which looked like a bad decision, but I understand they were trying to comeback too. So I just wanted to use this thread to get feedback on his performance to gauge his progress. Interested to hear what everyone thinks….

his int was on 4th and 10
at the end of the game and he was about to get hit. he really had no option other than trying to force on e in there. I wouldn’t really count that one against him. he played pretty well most of the game. There were a few drops by some WR’s that could have easaily been caught.

His stats this game weren’t as good as his previous games – that was somewhat his fault and somewhat his receivers’ fault (Mark Bradley, in particular, dropped a couple of wide open passes). On the other hand, I got the impression that he was relying a LOT on the skills of his receivers. There was a LOT of passes that he just kind of lobbed in the direction of Gonzalez, Bowe, and Bradley, hoping that they would manage to come up with it. Sometimes they did, sometimes they didn’t.

Thigpen looks good
no he’s not a hall of famer but he manages the game well (see Kerry Collins and the undefeated—yeah wow—Titans). We desperately need a pass rush. I don’t care if it comes from the MLB/OLB, the beer guy, DE, well you get the point. I however, still agree with dumping JA. The draft picks have done above average thus far. I’m not expecting hall of fame busts from every one—the big surprise is how our defense has actually played considering it is so patchwork (leads in the NFL in takeaways). Sackintosh was in rare form as usual and I think some help is needed to solidify the OL. Thigpen is a good QB—do I think he will anchor this team for the next 10 years—who knows but I dont think we need to waste a top 5 draft pick on a coin flip prospect of a QB. I’m not sold on any of those in college. I think the first draft pick from the chiefs should be an elite DE or a MLB to crush someone who dares to run up the middle. My 2c.

RT in Round 2
I had been saying R1 but have conceded to R2 being as our pass rush is so bad. I think best way to fulfill that pass rush is MLB and not DE. We have talent at DE, we do not have talent at MLB. But Macintosh desperately needs to be replaced as a starter and preferably I’d cut him, but am cool with him playing backup. But not if it means taking Richardsons place (whom I have no clue how good he is or isnt). I think RT is of higher importance than QB and belived this before Thigpen started playing well

Why not...
He hasn’t shown me anything spectacular, but he hasn’t been a bum either. I think he would be a reasonable opening day starter if he can win the job in camp. Take a QB later. If we are to continue the semi spread offense… Take Chase Daniel around the 4th rd. I thnk he would be a superb project.

Because
Chase Daniel is tiny. I’m a Mizzou fan and I love Chase Daniel, but I just don’t see him having a prosperous NFL career. I say we take Ryan Perriloux from whatever community college he’s playing at or call up Marcus Vick.

Project!
Chase is the same size as Brees. And a better QB both mentally and physically than Thigpen especially in a spread offense. Also, I havent checked but Bones isn’t much taller

Honestly
The question of the future of our offensive scheme needs to be addressed. If our version of the spread continues to be successful then do we look at taking a quarterback from a spread offense? Or are we solidifying the offensive line and returning to a more traditional offense? My gut tells me the current management will revert to a more traditional offense.
But if the spread works, and we do decide to go in that direction, why not take a guy like Chase Daniel? The reason his size doesn’t matter in college is because the spread is designed to help guys that are height-challenged like Daniel. They sit farther back in the shotgun and get rid of the ball quicker.

The argument could
Be made for Reesing as well. He is smart, does not turn the ball over alot. We could have the next Flutie! Of course we may already have him.

The argument against Daniel is his size
But I think it should be more about his play in big games. I’m an MU guy and a big fan of Chase, but he has yet to show up for any big games we’ve had the last two years, and often times looks lost. Seems to me he crumbles under pressure, and it’s just a snowball effect and he starts forcing it when it’s not there.
If we’re going to go with a college kid who’s been running the spread, I like Harrell, although I haven’t really paid attention to his career stats, but like the way he’s shown up in every big game they’ve had.

I'm satisfied with his play and think we have more pressing needs
I still think we draft a QB, but not with one of our first day picks, unless he’s the BPA still on the board. I’m not really sold on any QB right now as a top 5 pick, which is what we’re most likely going to have, and after watching yesterdays game, I think we have to improve our pass rush this offseason.
Somebody posted it in another thread that they had seen a mock draft with us taking Harrell in the 4th, which is about when I think we should address adding a QB, and if Harrell’s around, I would jump at that opportunity.

No, I'm a Pac-10 fan.
Arizona grad but I pull for most of the teams out west, save bitch ass Stanford.
Pretty neutral to the local teams just try to call it like I see it and I see Daniel consistently fold in the presence of any sort of pass rush.

The Chiefs have put (well within one point in the SD game) 20 points on the board in Thigpen’s last four games and should have had more points in the NO game thanks to some bad play calling at the line. You should be able to win a couple games when you put that many points up every game. It sounds like from an “outsider” (Cards fan) you need to get help for your defense early in the draft. But if there is a franchise QB there in the first round when the Chiefs pick, and Thigpen stuggles the rest of the way, and maybe even if he doesn’t, I think you have to go for him. Especially if there’s a new coach next season, which seems unlikely from what I read around here.

I think we HAVE
to go defense. DE seems most logical but it just sucks that we drafted one 3 years ago and now we have to again. That is the life, though. LB would work too. I think the main thing is when you have a pick as good as we’re going to have, you really have to look at who is the best player available.
Look for a QB in rounds 2-4, I think.
Another question, do we have any extra picks this year that we already know about?

is playing well enough to wait until round 2 to get a QB but i would hope we can wait til the third so we can get DE OL or MLB in the first two rounds

Thigpen
Thigpen gives us the possibility of drafting high in 2010. He is doing it well and improving on his skills evey game. The other backups we have will suffice. We have other serious needs that are win killers. Back to our point weeks ago, until we fix the O-Line, we could have a young Elway, Theisman, or anyone and they would not be successful. O line and LB have to be the first 3 picks.
