Good News for the Chiefs
Thanks, Herm!
According to this report, the Chiefs will be sticking with the spread offense, forcing LJ to adapt his style. This is good news, considering that the Chiefs offense soared from one of the leagues worst to one of the best.
The article also goes on to say that the spread offence doesn't exactly fit LJs running style, but I do recall a few plays against the Chargers where a stronger back (enter the woman beater) would have broken an arm tackle and taken the run a little further.
Either way, we will certainly find out come sunday when the Chiefs get their second win of the season against the NO Saints.
GO CHIEFS!

LJ
I have a feeling LJ will adapt to the spread and do well.. I still think pound for pound LJ is still a top 3 back. I believe he stops trying when he notices the offense is too predictable. They were running him up the middle too much!!

He will
be fine. The offense al saunders ran those two monster years he had was closer to a spread offense then the power running offense we ran the first part of the season. Defenses won’t be able to stack the box like they had all year, so trust me LJ is salivating over the opportunity to run in this new successful offense.

Good point
As long as LJ is wiling to adapt, I think he can be a monster.
Are there any power backs in a spread offense that you can think of?

Not in the college teams I watch
but Maroney does well in the Patriots “spread” offense
and I know one thing…if LJ catches the ball out of the backfield in space, he’s a bitch to bring down. I think we’ll see that often on Sunday.

To add
when you think about it, hasn’t LJ had much better success when we don’t stack the line and make it obvious that we are going to run.
I seem to remember in the Denver game, we had a lot of sets with 2 WR’s and Tony split out, with either Cottam on the line, or just Cox in the backfield with the 5 linemen. Even though technically it wasn’t “the spread”, it spread the defense out so our less-than-stellar line could make some big holes.

LJ
Can’t block very well, and will only be in on running plays which is going to limit his production, I honestly see him just having an average mediocre game

"will only be in on running plays"
wrong…for two reasons
1) LJ, while not a great blocker, CAN actually catch the ball out of the backfield, and is quite dangerous when he does so.
2) if he is only in on running plays, then wouldn’t the Saints know that if he is in, we’re going to run?

We can't go backward from this point
We have finally gotten to the point of using the players to develop the “system” that works for the team. If we return to the old smash LJ into the line routine, we will just be taking two steps back. I’m completely confident (please Lord) that Chan and Herm know that if they decoy LJ in run situations, they can throw off the D for better matchups with the receivers to bust some long pass plays. Any time LJ gets the ball with 5 yards of open space, he will be a force and gain 7+ yards. I also think he will be more than happy to become a more diverse RB, because it will only add to his value. I also think that as long as the team is winning and he is an integral part of the winning, he will be a happy guy.
These guys are so competative, that anytime the team is losing, they want the ball every play, so that they can do more to get a win. Winning is the key and LJ can be just like Tony G as a key threat for the Defense to cover, opening up many other options, even if he doesn’t get the ball.
