Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Retrospect: Was the Jared Allen trade worth it?

Players aquired through Jared Allen trade:

OT Branden Albert

RB Jamaal Charles

S DaJuan Morgan

WR Kevin Robinson

Now while I believe that Branden Albert will turn out to be a great tackle for us for many years, and Jamaal Charles will probably turn out alright as a, what everyone likes to call, "change of pace" type back, Morgan and Robinson have yet to show much.  Granted we haven't seen much of them at all they could turn out to be steals.  Lets say Morgan and Robinson turn out to be garbage.  Jamaal doesnt seem durable enough to be an every down back ( I do love his running style).  So is a good to potentially great offensive tackle and a awesome "change of pace" type back worth an all pro defensive end in Jared Allen? You be the judge!

As for the actual trade, I love it. 4 players for 1 and of the 4 we get great depth where we need it. Obviously, our DL is banged up right now but nobody can predict injuries.

Besides that, we didn’t have to pay Jared Allen his huge contract. By the time, we are ready to be competing for the playoffs (2009 at the earliest, but realistically 2010), Allen will be on a major decline.

In my opinion, this trade was EXCELLENT in every regard. If only we would have gotten LJ the heck out of town when his trade value was high. That is a whole different story but our offense and lockerroom seem better sans LJ.

If everyone worked as hard as me, I would be out of a job.

Allen wasn't signing long term.

The comparison should be those picks vs Allen this year at the franchise $$, not long term. Not even a discussion. Definitely a good deal. If we waited and he walks we get nothing.

by saskwatch on Nov 11, 2008 6:42 PM CST reply actions

Not even a discussion is right

Albert alone was worth it. Jamaal Charles too? What a deal! Morgan & Robinson also? That’s highway robbery. Robinson hasn’t played before last Sunday so even talking about him or Morgan for that matter about not being impressive is bogus. They haven’t had the chance and I think they all will have future’s in this organization. Robinson undoubtedly is better than Webb and we’ll actually get to see his contributions every Sunday so for 7th rounder you can’t beat it

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 11, 2008 6:57 PM CST reply actions

I think robinson and morgan will turn out fine as well i was just saying hypothetically if they were busts would it still be worth it

by KCLoyalty on Nov 11, 2008 7:22 PM CST reply actions

The rounds they were drafted in

there is no way they can be considered “busts”

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 11, 2008 7:30 PM CST up reply actions

Why exactly

would we pay Jared Allen top dollar for a short term contract? We don’t need premiere players right now, we need them in 3-4 years when we actually become a contender.

by cvigz on Nov 11, 2008 7:23 PM CST reply actions

Allen would have signed long term for the right price.. thats what i was talking about, my bad i should have clarified

by KCLoyalty on Nov 11, 2008 7:25 PM CST reply actions

Plus

Allen is a Grade A Doucebag and I’m glad he left Kansas City and am reminded of that each time he opens his mouth

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 11, 2008 7:34 PM CST reply actions

KC Shuffle hit the nail on the head

Albert for Allen (at much less cost) alone will be worth it. He will be a huge factor for 10 or more years. JC will prove his value once he is healthy and now that we are running the style of offense that will highlight his talents. It has taken us a while to get there, but is seems to be coming together now. The other rookies are all gravy. Give ‘em a couple of years and they will be solid contributers or help us out with trade material. I don’t like to put it that way, but some of them are just a comodity that will bring more value to the team down the road. JA may have helped with some sacks and pressures, but we would have many other problems without Albert and the others.

by TXChiefan on Nov 11, 2008 7:39 PM CST reply actions

Agreed

It seems easier to fill in a DE than a LT. If Albert turns into an all pro that alone will be more than worth it. LT means much more than a DE in the terms of what it can mean to the offense. Not saying DE isn’t important at all. Just saying that it is harder to find a top notch LT.

I think a move that is never talked about is.....

Trading away Scott Fujita and keeping Kendell Bell among other craptacular LBs. Fujita is playing at a high level and is a leader.

Agreed

Along with Kwika Mitchell. My Bills fan buddy always thanks me every Sunday!

by TXChiefan on Nov 11, 2008 9:13 PM CST up reply actions

I think about Fujita & Mitchell all the time

Mitchell hurts the most because he was a R2 pick. If we had him at linebacker our defense would be a lot different. Why oh why did we not resign him?

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 11, 2008 9:22 PM CST up reply actions

Because of the stupid cover 2

He didn’t fit it very well. Or so they said.

by cmpotter on Nov 11, 2008 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

he didn't

and neither do Pat Thomas or Nap Harris

Hopefully, we’ll draft a solid MLB next year – I think that position and RDE are our last two pieces.

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 12, 2008 7:21 AM CST up reply actions

Even if we do it will take time for them to get used to the cover 2

not a popular defense in college.

Nap Harris was allegedly the perfect Cover 2 LB

but that might have been Herm and Gunther feeding us BS.

He may have been

They were pretty quick to use him as a scape goat. He didn’t have a bad year last year considering it was his first year in a Chiefs uni.

I don't know why we released him

I’m not sure what his salary was for this year or next, but being as banged up as we are in our LB corps and the FA’s were bringing in (Shotwell?) I personally would have prefered to keep Nap Harris this season. He didn’t even get a chance when he was healthy which leads me to believe he got on Herm’s shitlist. Was sad to cut him from my Madden team ; ^ )

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 12, 2008 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

Agree completely.

We have to fix the interior offensive line some, too, particularly at center. But the two key, gigantic holes left on this team are RDE and MLB.

If we get two studs at those two positions, honestly, we could compete as early as next year if the division has another off-year.

by rockchalk on Nov 12, 2008 6:21 PM CST up reply actions

Why is it Herm

Wanted a o-coordinator, that would build a system around the guys we have, but yet the damn cover has to be a mainstay? Why couldn’t we run a system to fit the guys we have/had? We have a lot of young talent on defense, if they do not grow into the cover two scheme, do they go the way of Mitchell, and Fujita? Will we keep pouring high picks into the defense to find the guys who fit?

Glad Minnesota has to deal with Allen.

We have enough problems with LJ. Jared from the sounds of things is back to his old ways, and drinking again, it will not turn out good for him.

You base this on what, exactly?

There was a commenter

Here at AP that said Jared was at a restaurant in Minn., he was drunk out of his mind, and acting like an ass. If that is the case, he will be in trouble before to long.( Just my two cents.)

I hope he gets his head out of his ass…

Good topic

I don’t think you can argue against the Allen trade with our current situation. If you are willing to magically create a 2007 trade for Larry Johnson, you have to think letting Allen go was good for this franchise.

What’s 15 sacks worth on sub .500 team?

by Chris Thorman on Nov 11, 2008 10:05 PM CST reply actions

He's got 8 in 9 games

My math might be off, but I believe that puts him on pace for more along the lines of 14-15.

He’s also freed up Kevin Williams to register 7 sacks, which is nice.

Ah, he had a good game Sunday

I hadn’t looked at his stats since then

he’s on pace for 14 now.

He’s still a douche (and to think, I had him sign my jersey =) )

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 12, 2008 9:05 AM CST up reply actions

Since you're here Norseman

Thanks for Thigpen.

We really appreciate that whole attempt to sneak him onto waivers you guys did there.

But no harm, no foul, right? We all know that Tarvaris will eventually get it. :-)

by Sudden on Nov 12, 2008 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

More Important than just the trade itself

Is that King Carl was able to get a very sweet package from the Vikings. A first rounder, two thirds and a seventh? That’s pretty a good deal even for a player that we would have otherwise locked long term otherwise, let alone for a player that we would’ve kept for a season that we knew would otherwise be a rebuilding year and then lost to FA anyways..

by Sudden on Nov 12, 2008 12:08 AM CST reply actions

I don't think any player

is worth the amount of money Jared Allen got. Players can go from amazing to never playing in such a quick span. Let’s be glad that we have a bunch of money to spend while we are rebuilding.

We did

some DT was wearing it…is he on the practice squad now?

(I can’t remember if it was Lokey or Jackson, but it was some short fat white guy – I kept doing double takes during training camp =) )

69

i am going to miss hearing #69 with the crushing blow or #69 with the big sack =-)
