The Current State of the Chiefs and The 2009 NFL Draft

From the FanPosts. Effort like this is rewarded. -Chris

It's never too early to start looking down the road at what sort of talent is going to be available on day 1 of the 2009 Draft, especially when you're 1-8 on the season and coming off a 4-12 season which ended with 9 straight losses.

I'll also be going over each of the key position groups and what the depth chart currently looks like to see from where we came and get a better idea of how far away we are from being back in contention for the West. Also a little fantasy advice scattered throughout. More after the flip!

Star-divide

I'm only giving the first three rounds because after that you get into more gray areas as the freak athletes and top 100 prospects go flying out the door and you're left with more gambling in the late rounds. Not to mention, Rd4-7 picks depend a lot on what we're able to pull down in the first 3 rounds.

That said, places I think need to be at the top of our priority list, in order: DE, ILB, or  OL (order of all three depends heavily on what the draft board looks like when the rock drops on us).

Position Groups:

Offense:

As far as things have been looking the last 3 weeks we seem to be set *knock on wood* at QB. Thigpen is putting up absolutely gross stats right now, made even more impressive consider how he played in Atlanta AND remember a month ago when our OL couldn't open a hole big enough to see through and they were almost WORSE at pass protection! While I still feel we need to address our O-line in every way possible this off-season, it has gone from being a top 2 priority to somewhere in the 2-3 range.

Our backfield is also performing surprisingly well, I've been pleasantly impressed by Charles much earlier than I had anticipated. It wasn't as much a matter of whether he'd learn how to produce in this league or not but more of when, and I'm happy to say that if you overlook the ankle, which shouldn't nag at him much longer if the team doctors keep him off it for a few more days. Savage is running the ball well, reminds me a lot of DSproles, especially since both are backing up all-star runners in LJ and LT respectively (they both have looked bad this year but I still have a feeling they've got at least a couple good years left in them as feature backs).

Mike Cox is playing well at FB, won't hear his name called out over the speakers much but we've been hurting bad ever since we let TRich skip out of town and lead-block for AP in Minnesota. Within a few years Cox should be a solid backfield blocker which will be an integral part of our offense if we decide to stick with anything even remotely resembling the spread. If Herm stubbornly tries to revert to his own brand of Martyball again then I'd like to see more emphasis put on the OL and better lead-blocker than Cox, hard to judge the untapped ability without being in the locker room though in my opinion, especially with a fullback.

Our receiving corps looked shallower than a juice box at the beginning of the season but I'm actually quite pleased with how they've shaped up recently. Mark Bradley (whom I started in two leagues this past weekend despite a whopping 0.0% start rate and less than 3% own per ESPN's fantasy stats; if you haven't already, pick him up at least as a tie-breaking benchwarmer but keep in mind, he's had double-digit fantasy games the last 3 weeks in a row after escaping the WR killing grounds of Chicago) came out of nowhere and is finally able to balance out the field with Bowe and Gonzalez (who's looking better than normal lately and has a good heir in Brad Cottam).

Toss Will Franklin (looks promising but had a bad set-back early on and is only now getting a chance to really shake off some of the rookie jitters so we'll see where he stands in 6 weeks) in as your slot guy and if you need to go 5 wide for a hail mary you can throw Webb and Darling in (about all they've shown to be good for this year is one or two catches blocks per game).

Kevin Robinson will probably ride out the year battling for the KR/PR slot but if we can get KSmith or LJ healthy I'd liked to see Savage back to return. His size and quickness make him a tough target to mark on the field plus he's got good burners on him, give a guy like that the ball and a little open space and he's going to make you pay for it.

Defense:

I'll start with the secondary, then the linebacking corps which will tie in with our D-line.

Thus far Herm has stuck true to form and proven he's one of the better coaches in the league at evaluating DB prospects. The Brandon's have been playing magnificently and, considering their youth, have more than a few mulligans left in the bag for the stupid rookie mistakes they'll inevitably make a few more times this year. Flowers has shown he's got a very strong base for what could very well develop into one of the top shutdown corners in the league with a few more years of experience. Carr, despite being a later pick from a mid-major has proven on more than one occasion that he's willing to earn the right to start on this team.

That's really it though for our CBs, Mo Legget is a raw talent, he's got enough of it to make it as a nickel back for KC in the future but for this year, he's a stop-gap until Surtain gets healthy again. Macklin and Colclough have yet to see any major game-time so the verdict is still waaay out on that one.

We seem to be well-stocked at Safety as the 2nd half of the season builds some momentum. Bernard Pollard and Jarrad Page have both proven why they're starting for KC. The addition of DaJuan Morgan through the 08 Draft gives us some insurance and could help pressure Pollard and Page into wrapping up rather than swingin for the fence with every hit. Aggression within a defense can win and lose games, something I'm gonna guess Gun knows all too well, but there's a difference between tattoo'ing a receiver over the middle on 3rd and long and trying so hard to blow the other guy up that you miss the tackle behind the line of scrimmage and give up a 30 yard gash instead.

Every year I feel like our corps of  LBs gets better and better and then gameday shows up and our LBs don't. The last few weeks we've been seeing more production from DJ and Demorrio, one of whom should be a heavy-hitting stud by now and is finally starting to look like he's figuring things out. It always looks like our LBs are trying to do too much at one time on just about every snap. We're missing reads in coverage and stuffing the wrong gap far too often, which is why we're +8 in turnovers and 0-3 in the last three weeks.

The rest of our LB's are pretty non-descript as of Week 10. The same can sadly be said about our D-line when it comes to pass-pressure. Glenn Dorsey is playing well all things considered and is on pace to whomp past greats like Warren Sapp in tackles as a rookie. Moving Tamba back left was far overdue and he seems to be getting back into the habit of consistently pressuring the pocket. The rest of the DLinemen rotating through have looked like an entirely different group than they did 2 months ago. They've still got a long road ahead of them just to reach mediocrity within the league but it's nowhere near as bad as I was anticipating after the way we played against Tennessee, Carolina, and Oakland.

The 2009 Draft

We're most likely looking at a pick somewhere in the 3-5 range which is awesome. At least we can try for another home-run of a draft class and have a legit chance of doing so with a top 5 pick.

Round 1: Michael Johnson - DE (Georgia Tech)

The man is 6'7" 260lbs and runs a 4.63 40. He's got top-end talent and he's massive. Watching him play gives you a better feel for his ability, reminds me some of the physical ability Jared Allen had when he first showed up at Arrowhead as a rookie (6'6" ~255). A little time in an NFL-quality weight room and he'll be ~270 and just blowing opposing QB's. After the Hali Experiment went down in flames KC needs a dominant pass-rushing RE and Michael Johnson is the prospect.

Rey Maualuga - ILB (USC) would be another excellent pick here as well. Both are top 10 prospects and either would be an enormous help in shoring up our wretched run defense and sack totals.

Round 2: Herman Johnson - OG (LSU)

Yet another freakishly enormous rookie at 6'7" 349lbs and runs a 5.45 40, not the quickest guy on the field but with his size DT's will have their hands full on every down. He would immediately be able to compete for, and likely win, the starting RG spot from Day 1. The trend KC seems to be flirting with is that of a very large, physical team that can get a good first push off the line and Johnson fits that mold to a tee. There's a lot of room between Johnson and the next best prospects (Canfield and Parker of Cinci and Tennessee respectively) on the list, if we intend on addressing our OL in the draft this year, and we most definitely should, we couldn't make a better value/need pick than this kid.

Round 3: Either we look to the OL again with one of the better Center prospects to come out in the past few years with Antoine Caldwell - C ('Bama), excellent leader, acceptable size, could stand to gain some weight at the NFL level but has been playing on a heretofore undefeated Alabama team that can run and pass at will, a testament to the OL's ability to protect the QB across a mix of offensive packages.

Or, we could go with an ILB (assuming we take Johnson over Maualuga in Rd1 otherwise Caldwell would be a solid value pick while still filling a need) like Scott McKillop (Pitt) or Daniel Holtzclaw (Eastern Michigan). Both have almost identical metrics at 6' 1" ~245 and 40-times in the 4.63-4.65 and have been heavily underrated (Holtzclaw more so than McKillop) but each looks to be a solid draft prospect. McKillop ended '07 with 151 tackles which lead the nation, Holtzclaw had 125 tackles with 2 INTs as well in '07.

I'd love to see KC pick up M. Johnson, H. Johnson, and McKillop or Caldwell in a dream draft scenario (in order of preference). I'm not factoring in supplemental picks, trades, etc... as yet because it's still only November and that'll all change a lot over the next 5-6 months.

Until then, we just have to do our best to enjoy the football our Chiefs are playing lately which shouldn't be too hard regardless of the outcome. These kids are playing with a new fire these last few weeks though, after the debacle that was the first 6 weeks of the season for KC things are beginning to click on both sides of the ball for our rookies. They're learning to play together as a team and it's finally showing, won't be long before we get another win or two under our belts.

Nice write up

I’ve been thinking a lot about the draft. With Thigpen’s play, things have definitely changed (if he keeps it up).

Defense is definitely the way to go. I agree with either DE or Linebacker with the first pick. Our defense needs to develop an ability to pressure so our talented secondary can have some help. I’m still not sold on Pollard because of his tendency to miss tackles when going for the big hit, but we definitely have bigger issues.

After that, we definitely still need help on the right side of our O-line. The entire offense changes when there is a reliable O-line.

Lastly, I still think QB should be addressed somewhere, if nothing else, so that there is depth. But I also like the idea of competition at the position, and knowing you have a young backup who is a possible heir apparent is always nice.

We will continue to draft the BPA

as we have the last 3 years…depending on the outcome of the Raiders game (and thus whether we are likely to pick ahead of them) I think it could very well be Crabtree.

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 10, 2008 5:12 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I still think

Johnson is a legit top 5 prospect in terms of sheer ability and freak size. While there’s no denying Crabtree is a beast I can’t see Herm passing up on an amazingly talented defensive stud to wreak havoc on the right side of our DL. Crabtree’s the sexier pick but the gap between the two is the equivalent of going from a 97 to a 98 QB rating, almost non-existent.

I just have a hard time believing Crabtree will even stay on the board past the top 3 picks which, given how we’re playing lately and the ease of schedule we have over the next six weeks, I don’t know that we’ll win that race two years in a row. Am I the only one with the strange hunch that Al Davis is going to crap his pants when we sees Darius Heyward-Bey at the combine and pick him over CT?

by JHWK on Nov 10, 2008 5:29 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed with Johnson

More emphasis is being placed on the defensive end because more and more teams are passing. I think it’s bypassed the LT as the 2nd most position in football.

Great post

Since you’re new, you may not be familiar with this site’s relationship with Daniel Holtzclaw so check it out.

Much appreciated

Good story about Holtzclaw though, the kid’s definitely got the drive to start in this league, if nothing else.

Nice

I wondered about that yesterday.

Thigpen should be able to get enough competition out of Quinn Gray (who is a very capable backup and has the ability to be a starter somewhere in need of a game-managing QB for a few years *cough*Seattle*cough*) for the remainder of the year and next year if he stays on the roster here. Also, remember that Croyle is still on the roster and, while I don’t see him as anything more than a backup. He’d probably benefit the defense more than our offense given that… you know… Thigpen isn’t made of glass so Croyle would be able to work out against the 1st D, which would be good for both since he’s a very capable passer that’s got decent mobility. He wouldn’t take the hits in practice and our young secondary could get some very valuable experience.

Our OL wouldn’t be in THAT much trouble right now with one or two shuffles and a blue chip pick plus a 3rd round C with late-1st Rd talent. Look at an OL with Albert, Waters, Caldwell, Johnson, Taylor as the starting five. That’s an average weight of 325 lbs, and an average height of ~6’5". Throw in the fact that on that O line are 2 proven tackles (Taylor has seen limited time but has shown he’s got a lot of upside on either side of the line, I’d start him at RT obviously), an all-pro LG, a top 3 Center prospect in this year’s class, and the #2 guard in the nation this year at RG.

That’s a line I’d be thrilled to see take the field at the beginning of next season.

I think Pollard has shown he’s got the ability and the intelligence to play at this level, it’s the discipline to do what the team needs rather than go for the big hit that he’s struggling with. That’s the responsibility of Dave Gibbs and Gun if I’m not mistaken. When he’s in control he’s money, it’s just his tendency to play like a college kid going for the bif that gets him into trouble.

by JHWK on Nov 10, 2008 5:19 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'm stumping for Jason Smith R2

I think our offensive line would fare better with a new RT than it would a RG. Herb Taylor is a LT, let’s not pull a Jordan Black on him and bounce him around everywhere.

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 10, 2008 5:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That may be where we've played him

But it’s not where he’s seen the majority of his snaps. From 2003 to 2005 Taylor played every game as the starting RT. The only reason he’s seen more playing time at LT than RT this year is just because Albert has had some injury time out and Herm didn’t want to move Sackintosh from RT to LT and Taylor into the RT slot, why switch two positions when you could put a versatile backup RT into your LT slot?

Taylor should have been given the chance to start ahead of Big Mac when Thigpen was given the reins to the offense, if not sooner imo.

Great Analysis

Just read the analysis of the 2009 Chiefs Draft outlook by JWHK. This guy knows his chiefs and he also knows the talent that’s out there. I was very impressed.

Holtzclaw!

We’re going to need tons of analysis like this and mock drafts like yours in the coming months, JHWK.

I don’t agree with Johnson, and see him falling in the coming months out of the Top Ten, but I do like bulking up our OL.

Personally, I prefer DE/ILB/OLB at this point because our defense needs more work, but I can’t really complain about any of your picks.

About how I feel about it.

I am not high on Johnson, I believe he’s a midrounder at best. I believe Texas’ Orakpo is the best DE in this class, but overall I’m pretty underwhelmed by this DE class.

I don’t know, DEs never look that great to me when I’m scouting. Don’t ask me.

by Direckshun on Nov 10, 2008 10:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Believe you me

I’d love to forecast Orakpo over Johnson any day of the week. I’m a Big 12 guy and Texas (football) isn’t really in my “must hate” category, getting beat out by MU, KSU, NU, and OU, in that order.

I’ve just not seen enough tape of Orakpo to warrant the pick over Johnson. That will change this weekend though when I get a chance to see Orakpo at the KU game Saturday. I’ll be able to more fairly pass judgment then and being able to finally get a good bead on him would soften the blow of what I’m expecting the outcome of the game to be.

Johnson

Has the physical ability to play in the NFL at a high level. After watching him quite a lot this season (I wasn’t high on the kid either coming into this season, he seemed overrated just because he’s freakishly athletic. A roommate of mine is from Georgia, however, and as such I’ve paid them a lot more attention this season) I’m comfortable seeing him in a Chiefs uni as our first round pick this year.

And by the way, the kid appears to have a ridiculous vertical, he’s got at least a couple batted passes from 10 yards off the line of scrimmage, a blocked FG, etc… Long story short, more often than not he seems to find a way to get himself involved in the play. Put that kind of attitude and drive in a 6’7" 260lb frame and I’ll draft him without a second thought.

by JHWK on Nov 10, 2008 8:21 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I am on the Selvie bandwagon

The guy is a beast and most NFL scouts say he is the most ready to play in the NFL. The guy never takes a play off and practices just as if it were a game. He is good on and off the field. Never been in trouble and participates in communtiy service as well. This guy has the potential to be the face of whoever drafts him.

Indecision is the key to flexibility

Not a fan of Selvie, either.

But like I said, it takes a lot for me to be impressed with a DE.

by Direckshun on Nov 10, 2008 10:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Why aren't you impressed with Selvie?

He get’s double teamed and chipped on every play and still has 11 TFL, 5 sacks, 5 batted down passes, and 3 qb hurries. I wouldn’t take him with a top 5 pick, but I like him in the 1st round.

My Mock

1. Crabtree – best player available. All of the DEs are risky for a top 5 pick and we know Crabtree has the potential to be HOF material. The only other pick I wouldn’t lose sleep over would be Andre Smith of Alabama. Would probably become the best RT in the entire league, but I just think that an amazing WR is harder to come by than a RT.
2. Spikes – MLB for Florida. Aggressive and good in pass coverage. By the way I would take Jason Smith here, but I think he’ll go toward the end of the 1st.
3. Canfield/Loadholt(RG/RT) – Can’t decide on this one. Loadholt is massive (350 lbs!!!), not very athletic though. Orakpo had a field day with him. Canfield is a RG for Cincinnati, has some character issues.
4. Pat White (QB/WR)- Project QB and could play at wideout as well. We could use him in the wildcat offense that is the new rage in the NFL.
5. Word-Daniels (CB) – Possibly another Brandon Carr. Plays for Georgia Tech.

I think we should address our biggest hole of DE in Free agency. Like a Terrell Suggs. I’d also pay Dansby, which could solidify our linebacking corp.

by chiefsfan1384 on Nov 10, 2008 11:20 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Jason Smith

is what I like to hear. I don’t think he’ll go 1st round like everyone else does, but then again teams haven’t been stupid the past few years and been drafting lots of lineman early. I’d be tickled pink if we scooped him up in Round 2

by KansasCityShuffle on Nov 10, 2008 11:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Crabtree would be ok with me

1. Crabtree/Laurinaitis either one would make me happy
2. Alex Mack Center from Cal- Niswanger allows to much penetration up the middle, plus Mack is an angry man on the football field in the Olin Kruetz mold.
3. Matt Shaughnessy DE Wisconsin
4. Marcus Freeman OLB Ohio State
5. Tom Brandstater QB Fresno State

Herman Johnson scares me

He is 390 lbs, not 349. He reminds me of that fat ass out of Wisconsin 6/7 years ago Aaron Gibson that ate himself out of the NFL. I watched Jason Smith play this weekend vs Texas and he looks good. I like his shuffle coming out of his stance, very quick feet.

Why is this an important trait for a 1st round DE?
A little time in an NFL-quality weight room and he’ll be ~270 and just blowing opposing QB’s.

He can do whatever he wants off the field, but I’m not sure that would fly on gameday.

My only hesitation...

… is that USC players don’t tend to be amazing in the NFL.

That list has its highlights, but for the most part, is filled with should-have-beens.

I just noticed

that Junior Seau was drafted fifth overall – who was that talking about a MLB not being worth a Top 5 pick? =)

by PVChiefsfan on Nov 11, 2008 1:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I was one of them among others, what's your point?

Teams just don’t put a premium on MLB’s, but rather on positions of value for a top selections (QB, DE,LT, RB & occationally a WR or OLB) That’s the just nature of the position teams don’t value MLB (other than cover two scheme) the same as they do the other postions.

Do you know that of the past 10 drafts the highest MLB selected was Brian Urlacher at #9? and that during the last 10 years he’s the only one that was selected in the top 10? The rest were in the middle to later selections in the draft. The next highest LB taken was AJ Hawk at #5, but he was considered an OLB prospect coming out of college.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that their not worth selecting, but not that high. Why overpay when you can still select a solid MLB later in the 1st round while picking up an additional pick for trading down. If we are selecting in the top 3 we go with a pass rushing DE. If the best DE is Mike Johnson we select him, if not then we trade down (pick up an additional pick), and select the best B_MLB_A.

by aPacificChief on Nov 12, 2008 2:22 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

There's always a team looking to get ahead of another team for a certain player.

What kills alot of the trades is compensations for the move, or that the team with the high selection does not want to drop too far down. Otherwise lose a chance at getting a quality player.

The financial cost of drafting in the top 5 is high which might make teams reluctant, but if the player they deem a difference maker (at a position of need) is available they make the move. I believe the pick that’s the most difficult to move is the #1 overall. Only because of the financial cost of picking #1, and its long term salary cap effects if the teams misses on the prospect. But the other teams were all inquiring about making moves throughout the top 10 picks (last April).

I don’t think we will be picking #1 (I hope not anyways) next year, there are other teams out there worse than us.

Despite the school

I still like Maualuga a hell of a lot. USC can do whatever they want, I’ll still (almost) always root for them to lose. And yet watching them play, the one guy you tend to really notice on defense that’s playing with some serious fire in himself is Maul. Fundamentally, he seems incredibly sound which is something we’re desperately lacking. I’m tired of seeing broken and straight-up missed tackles.

by JHWK on Nov 11, 2008 10:19 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Fundamentally sound and Maualuga in the same sentence?

Yikes!! I think he is what you look for in a linebacker when it comes to mean streak aggressiveness, and nastiness, but he is not fundamentally sound. He plays to out of control, and just seems to pile on after somebody else makes the play. His footwork is sloppy and he looks to have no clue when it comes to coverage. I rank him way behind Laurinaitis.

by JasonM on Nov 12, 2008 7:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

To an extent. The most common problem I’ve seen him have, by far, is his inability to contain himself and play within his means. He has a tendency to play too aggressively more than he should, which is a big part of why I didn’t mention him as anything other than a consolation prize.

As to the whole DE debate: I’d love to scratch Johnson and replace him with Orakpo (I always seem to feel safer putting faith in Big 12/SEC players above all other divisions) or move a different position up into the 1st pick. That said, I can’t warrant doing so until after I’ve seen Orakpo play, live, Saturday at the KU/Texas game. Once that happens, I’ll hopefully be able to slide him up into first place on my DE prospects list. Until then though… he’s in the mid-late 1st round range.

kansas might've lucked out this weekend

they may not have to face Orakpo or OLT Ulatoski. As A MIZZOU fan I really hope you guys get destroyed, so we wrap up another North title after we crush ISU. I like Texas WR Shipley alot, I wouldn’t mid if the Chiefs took a chance on him late in the draft/undrafted free agent.
