I was a Tyler Thigpen fan before any of you. :)
Hey there,
New poster here. Live 20 mins from Coastal Carolina, so it was pretty big news here when Coastal announced they would be starting a football program about six years ago. Pretty incredible how quickly they grew into a power in the Big South, missing the national playoffs one season because of a bizarre botched play in their last game of the season, then making it the next.
So I've been a fan of Thigpen for a while now, and I'm thrilled to see him and others make it to the NFL I'm betting the Vikings are wishing they didn't try to sneak Thigpen onto their practice roster given they are relying on Gus Frerrote right now. :) Thrilled to see other Chanticleers in the NFL-was pretty stunned when the Bengals took WR Jerome Simpson in the second round this year. Too bad that's not working out right now. They took him as insurance I think in case they traded Chad Johnson, and took another WR in the draft. Has been inactive for most games, but when he finally got into one, he got injured on his first catch I think. :(
But I digress. I like Tyler a lot, like that he's mobile with a strong arm, but I thought it would be a long term project with him to get him to where he could be a serviceable backup/gadget QB. Thought the NFL level of the game would be too much for him. Quite frankly the stats from the game against Atlanta didn't surprise me at all.
So I have to say these last three games have been a surprise to me. I thought the game against Tampa was going to be particularly ugly. His numbers were down the game, but no INT's in these three games have to be pretty stunning to just about everyone.
It's been pretty funny to read this blog over the past few weeks, seeing the near hatred and disgust for Thigpen suddenly turn into love, joy, and hope. I caution you, its only three games. He's likely to have more bad games before the end of the season. And next season should he make it through to be the starter next season. So I think people annointing him at the QB of the future for the Chiefs need to take a deep breath and see how he finishes the season off at least.
Believe me though I understand the frustration and futilty you Chiefs fans have been going through-I'm a Cardinals fan since their St. Louis days so I know all about futility. :) But I'm thrilled for Tyler and really do hope he can continue his good play for the Chiefs.

I still want to draft a QB
I want to see this for the rest of the season before I jump on the band wagon. My support for Thigpen is growing more each week, the move to the spread offense was genious by Chan.

Agree On Drafting A QB
You never want to put all your eggs on one basket (especially behind this line) and it’s still essential to develop another QB. Fortunately Thigpen’s emergence (I’m loving the spread offense too…it’s great to watch) has negated the need to draft one in the first round so we can go with a guy who may be a bit more of a project as we won’t need him to step in right away,
We also don’t need to overpay for Losman now either…having a guy capable of fulfilling that role at QB does so much for a team.

it is a must
if for nothing else, you need to let the guy develop. I don’t agree with throwing a rookie QB to the wolves in most situations. We need some depth too. A rookie QB would do well developing behind Thigpen and Gray.
Let Thigpen be our Kitna, and our drafted QB be our Carson Palmer.

If
he keeps playing well, he can be Palmer. Why screw up a good thing?

Agreed
We don’t really know what Thigpen’s ceiling is yet. As one commentator noted on ESPN, Thigpen’s been performing better the last three weeks than just about any QB in the NFL, and the guy’s only in his second year (so it’s not necessarily atypical of his ability level). Maybe he’s Palmer, maybe he’s Kitna, maybe he’s Klingler. We aren’t going to know for awhile…but right now he’s looking extremely promising.
And if he does turn out to be able to perform at this level on a regular basis for his career, there’s a case to be made that Thigpen’s one of the biggest waiver wire steals of all time.

better to have too many than not enough
Eventually we can trade off one or the other if it looks like we have two solid potential starters.

Thanks for the reality check.
Some folks seem to forget about that. I was a Grbac fan at one point and look how that turned out.
Just keep matriculating the ball down the field boys.

We do face some pretty horrible defensive teams the rest of the season.
With games against New Orleans, Oakland, San Diego, and Cincy he could have a pretty good end of the season. I still would like to draft a QB, but if we continue to play well with him at QB, then it’s not as huge of an offseason priority.

Get Thiggy more help
The Chiefs may have found a diamond in the rough with Thigpen. If he finished the season strong, the Chiefs should focus on getting him some help, rather than trying to draft a qb. I’d much rather see the Chiefs pick up a stud o-lineman, or even Crabtree, than to take Stafford or any other qb coming out. None of the qbs this year are that great. Lets get Thigpen some help for next year, and maybe draft a qb like Bradford or McCoy in 2010. Can you imagine T.G., Bowe, Bradley, and Crabtree?? Look out!

Disagree
If he finished the season strong, the Chiefs should focus on getting him some help, rather than trying to draft a qb.
I don’t want Thigpen having a good 1/2 season deter us from drafting a QB. We’re playing in an offense that the head coach obviously don’t want to employ. Let’s get another QB in here for sure. Having two QBs is a good problem to have.

Who is worth drafting?
I’m down with signing Losman or someone like that, but who is worth a high draft pick? Id rather use our number one on a money Tackle to block for whoever is qb.

Stafford would be fine IMO
But he’d also be a high 1st rounder. Personally, I’d rather find somebody in the 2nd round.
The only position worth drafting high in the 1st round is LT and we’ve already got a pretty good one of those. Gs, Cs and RTs don’t typically go in the top half of the first round.

Need O-line, D end and LB help much more than....
a QB. I’d like to see the before mentioned positions addressed on day 1. If on the second day, there a good looking QB prospect take him, otherwise just sign someone.

I hope we don't get Losman!!!
There’s a reason he’s on the benchl, and it’s not just Edwards. I back Thigpen for now.

Thiggy + Gray
I think Thiggy could be the real deal. That being said I actually like
Quinn Gray a lot too. Remeber a couple of years ago, he torched the Chiefs and almost won the game. I’m down to keep these guys as our 1 and 2 and focus the draft on D-ends, linebackers, and more O-line.
PS- I think Stafford is really overated. He chokes in every big game
by C-7PumpkinSmasher on Nov 10, 2008 1:30 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Agree
Stafford is over hyped because of this years pinner QB class. There is no sense getting a subpar top 5 QB when we could take another stud o-lineman, Maulauga or a pass rusing Micheal Johnson. Hopefully, Detroit takes Stafford so we’re not left with a tough decision.

Detroit
I’m betting will be involved in the Losman sweepstakes.

Yeah detroit likes drafting WRs with top picks :)

Correction
Matt Millen liked drafting WRs with top picks. :) I seriously doubt Martin Mayhew will be doing that, particularly since they’re already set at WR with Megatron, Furrey and McDonald (if they re-sign him). Mayhew doesn’t strike me as a fool of a GM like Millen obviously was.

We Don't Want To Sign Losman Now
Doing so would require us to overpay for a guy who’s likely not going to be our starter. Not worth it, we’re better off drafting a QB.
Graham Harrell would be my top choice for drafting. I’m not sold on Stafford at all.

And When I Say Draft A QB
I don’t mean with our top pick. We’re better served grabbing a linebacker or lineman (offensive or defensive) with a pick that high.

How about Nate Davis in the second round

+1000.
Use our first two picks in the first two rounds on a DE and MLB, whichever value is better respectively, and take Graham Harrell in the third. Absolutely love Harrell.
And I really don’t think Stafford is going to be a good NFL QB at all. No thanks.
In a perfec tworld, I’ll take Mauluga in Round 1 and Selvie or Orakpo in Round 2. Or Michael Johnson in Round 1 and a MLBer like Holtzclaw or Brandon Spikes in Round 2.

Hey...
Lets get Pat White from West Virginia. We could probably snag him in the 4th. Worst comes to worst we put him at WR, like Brad Smith in NY. His nickname is “the Chief”

By the way...
I’m starting to think more and more that if we can’t trade out of the top 5 we are going to take the BPA. So its looking like Crabtree might be coming to KC. However, we cannot ignore the biggest hole on this team and that is our pass rush. If we are going to spend some serious money in the off-season we have to get a RE.

As for your topic
I think most people were Thigpen fans before I was. I wanted to cut off his nards and ship him to Canada after the Falcons game. I saw absolutely nothing that led me to believe that he would ever be worth a burnt turd in the NFL.
I will however, be first to admit that I was wrong

Whats wrong with Canada??
Hah, to be honest, at this point I would welcome Thigs in the CFL.

I Don't Think Anyone Saw This
Tony Gonzalez sees the guy more than any of us do and he didn’t think Thigpen was capable of this. And if his receiver didn’t see any ability it’s a pretty safe guess that the coaching staff didn’t think too much of him…they were just looking for a guy to take snaps until Quinn Gray was ready.
His emergence is unbelieveable. The Chiefs deserve a lot of credit for putting in the spread to cater to Thigpen’s skills.

Herm Edwards...awesome
It finally opened up my thought that most of the players being picked by Herm Edwards turned out to be good…Tyler Thigpen, our rookie draft picks, Mark Bradley, Connor Barth, our offensive linemen…
