A new blogger and his thoughts
Hey, I'm new to this blog and all blogs in general to be honest. I've been a die hard Chiefs fan my whole life and I hate to see the shape our team is in. It seems to me that Carl has always been able to do one thing good at a time but lacks the ability to multi-task. He built a great D for Marty but no offense. Built a great offense for Vermeil but no defense. Now, he's trying to build a whole team through the draft and ignoring free agency. You have to do both. Look at the 49ers of the 80's, the Bills and Cowboys of the 90's and the Patriots of recent years. They didnt rely just on the draft or just free agency. They realized you have to use both effectively to get a winning team, to get a dynasty. Teams that rely purely on the draft end up like the Buc's of the 70's and 80's or the Bengals of the 90's. They go decades upon decades of dwelling in the cellar because the draft is a pure gamble. Now we are in a heck of a shape. I'm not going to bash Carl or Herm. They're both ok at what they do but they are not the men to lead the Chiefs out of this mess. We need to get that assistant GM out of New England that Whitlock mentioned in his column the other day and then somehow entice Cowher. Thats me dreaming. In reality I think Herm and Carl will be resigned to lengthy contracts at the end of the year.

Welcome to AP, Steve
Glad to have you.
The assistant to whom you’re referring is Scott Pioli. He’s followed Belichick most of his career so I’d tend to agree with you there. However, the problem I see is that the Pats know how good he is and will try to keep him in some capacity. He seems to be pretty loyal to Belichick who gave him a job with some hefty responsibilities without any prior NFL experience. Their relationship dates back to like the early 90s.
I agree with you, to some extent, about Herm and Carl. Check out this poll to see where the rest of the community stands.

Definitely not lengthy
Going through 2009 with them would be difficult but I could see that realistically happening. Or maybe I’m overestimating how much coach and GM’s contracts matter.

No free agents, because we were designed to lose on purpose...
to put ourselves in a better position to take the top rated players on top of the draft boards. I put up a post on why I thought we didn’t sign any Free Agents. Should explain further why we need to lose.
I agree with the multi task part, Carl always seemed to do just enough to get us to be competitive, but not enough to take us over the top. So if we only had Marty’s defense to go along with Vermeils offense we should of been at the AFC Championship at the least.

I think Herm will get a one year extension
and be shipped out with Carl after next year if we don’t do better.

Sweet sign Pioli
That way we will have someone for Belichick to hate as well. :)
