Soren Petro: "How many players are you away from having the type of team you want?"
Herm Edwards: "Umm, maybe six."
Soren Petro: "So of those six, how many do you think you might have on the squad now that could grow and fill those needs in the future?"
Herm Edwards: "Probably three."

So the question is....
Six players away. You assume that means six starters. So what six starting positions do you think Herm is looking to upgrade?
Who are the three players that Herm thinks could grow to fill some of those strating positions?

Hmm...
I’ll hazard a guess.
QB – obvious need, and I’ll bet Herm and Co. are still holding out hope for Croyle (though I’m not)
RT – more obviousness, and the Herm plan here long-term is most likely Richardson
RG – Herm’s plan: Adrian Jones – I don’t see anyone on the roster who works here
WR – hopefully Franklin will help here, but more depth needed
DE – find someone to play on the right; Johnston perhaps?
MLB – Harris and Thomas most likely gone ASAP – again, no one on the roster who works
Just my thoughts.

I'd say your assessment is pretty spot on.
Herm thinks that he has three that might work in Brodie, Richardson, and Johnston/McBride and switching Hali back to LDE.
But he needs a stud MLB and he’ll have the chance to grab Mauluga in the draft, he needs a RG which he can pick up in the second or third.

MLB
If you think we’ll take a MLB first round who do you think would be better for our Chief’s system: James Lauranitis or Rey Maualuga?
I don’t watch a lot of college ball so many this is a stupid question.

I would say Lauranitis
Mainly because a lot of USC players don’t seem to translate well in the NFL for some reason. Don’t know if thats a result of Carrolls coaching style or what.

Troy Polamalu, Ronnie Lott
Definitely Carroll would be the reason for the others, but USC seems to produce some good defensive guys for some reason.

It's The Wide Receivers At USC Who Struggle Most In The NFL
The other positions aren’t that bad. Look at Sedrick Ellis, for example. Before he got hurt he was very solid for New Orleans. Carson Palmer played under Carroll and has been a legitimate franchise QB. Tatupu’s been All-Pro caliber. Plenty of good players made the leap.

HuH?
Do you mean guys like Justin Fargas who had a 1000 rushing yards last year, or Troy Polamalu, Carson Parmer, Mike Patterson, Keith Rivers (who is just a rookie but already is fourth on the team with 31 tackles an INT & a forced fumble).
Or are we talking about guys like Mike Williams & Dwayne Jarrett?
I like Maualuga, but he has some baggage (alleged that he got into an altercation in a off campus party) that might be enough to have Herm turn his attention to James L.
Rey is bigger at 260, while James is only 240. 240 is kinda small for a MLB. James does have better speed than Rey, but again lets wait till the end of the year to see how the two produce.

Not saying there aren't any guys
But for as many top end prospects that come out of USC, the number that become top end NFL players is pretty low.

To clarify a bit
I think the number recently is low. USC in its history has an impressive track record. But recently a lot of the players have flamed out.

prefer not to go into a long drawn out debate about this, but
couldn’t the same be said about the Florida State’s, the Gators, the Penn St.’s, or Georgia?

Something I didn't think of...
although I’d bet that Herm and Co. would say that Novak’s the answer there. I still think it was a big mistake to let Barth go; however, at this point, kicker isn’t a priority (at least in my mind). Novak’s kickoffs have seemed to get better as the season progresses, and I’m not ready to completely dismiss Novak just yet – at least until we have a larger sample size of kicks with this team to look at.
Of course, if a kicker that’s made 5 of 7 field goals this season and 18 of 27 overall was our only problem, I’d be bitching about it much more. In any case, it seems that it takes at least some kickers a couple trips around the barn before they really stick with a team.

true, i noticed the last 2 games his kicks seemed 10 yards avg or so farther then his other games (hangtime seemed ok too)

Lauranitis
I think would be a better fit becasue he can stay in his gaps and is very good at coverage also. Rey Maualuga IMO is al ittle bit better of an athlete but seems to want to come up and rush to much for a MLB. I think either is a very good pick though

The knack on James Laurinaitis is
he can’t get off blocks well. Willie Lanier played the position at 245 pounds. Ray Lewis is 250 pounds. He may be able to put on another 5 pounds if necessary. Overall I like James better, myself.

Lanier at 245 lbs.
weren’t the offensive linemen in the 70’s averaging in 260 lbs?
O-line guys are like 330 lbs now, 240 is way too small. 250 should be right, but would he lose his speed? Rey is 260 and runs around at 4.7’s. Would James put another 10 lbs and still be able to get the 4.6’s?

As For Herm's Evaluation
I think that “three” is an extremely optimistic evaluation of how many can step up if Seth guessed the correct positions. Right now I wouldn’t be surprised if the real answer was “zero” but I’ll say “one” (Richardson…and that’s really sketchy since he hasn’t gotten playing time). Johnston’s a late-round pick, Thomas and Harris suck, Adrian Jones really sucks, there is no QB for next year on this year’s roster, and Franklin’s shown nothing impressive since preseason.
And even if there were three guys on the roster who could step up and play well at those positions, I have serious doubts as to whether Herm would have any clue who they were.
