Future QB Watch

This weekend Sam Bradford of Oklahoma will be going against his greatest challenge to date this season when he takes on the fifth ranked Texas Longhorns. This kid has been nothing short of spectacular since he has played for the Sooners. (If your an MU fan like me you would know) In this season alone he has completed over 70% of his passes with a TD to INT ratio of 18:3. (most important stats in my opinion) The best thing about Bradford is that he is a true pocket passer. (none of that Tebow crap) He doesn't even have any rushing yards this year, but is mobile enough to avoid pressure. He has great measurables in that he is 6'4" and 218 LBS. The only knock on this kid is that he doesn't have great arm strength and his release could be quicker. I highly suggest you watch this game and tell me what you think of him. Also, there is a problem that would make this hype seemingly worthless and that is the fact that he is a red-shirt sophomore. He is eligible for the NFL draft, but there is a good chance he could stay with Oklahoma for another year or possible two. I think we need to get a Sam Bradford declare petition going on this site. I know this might be lame, but what if we could somehow influence this kid to come early out by getting in contact with an agent who could advise him to declare this year due to the complications of the CBA expiring after the 2009 season, abolishing the rookie salary pool. I don't know, but I think this kid is our future and it could be dictated whether he declares after this season or not.

As a MIZZ fan

I have watched Bradford regularly, the kid is very talented, he makes very few mistakes and has the arm strength to make it in the pros. however, I’m not sure the system that he’s use to in Ok will match with too many pro offenses, but he appears to have enough talent to adapt and should have a good career. this weekends game against Tx could shed light on his abilities in a big game.

I hate to say it

because I like Bradford, but I’m rooting for Texas.

I DO NOT want Mizzou to have to play OU in the Big XII Championship again

I'm rooting for Texas this week

I’ll be in Austin for the MU/TEX game so I want to see another 2 v. 3 like MU/KU last year.

I don't watch college so..

What type of offense do they run?

When projecting QBs from college to the pros there are two things I look at.
1) Completion % – accuracy is something you either have or you don’t by the time you get to the pros, I am sure there is an exception but guys just don’t become more accurate when playing against better competition in the NFL
2) Games played – I want to see their ability displayed over a long period of time, I don’t want a one year wonder that caught lighting in a bottle who will never produce that way long term.

So on Bradford I love his completion %, but I need to see a lot more starts from him, this is one reason I prefer Senior QBs to JRs, you have more game film to evaluate.

Good criteria

I’ve seen similar comments from Football Outsiders, and they make sense. Completion percentage is very important, I’d say more important than things like height or sprinting speed.

One sleeper guy to watch for the 2010 draft will be Riley Skinner from Wake Forest: he led the nation in % last year, will be a 4-year starter who will not be drafted until the 7th round or so because he’s not tall and doesn’t have a big arm. He just completes passes, avoids pass rushers, makes winning plays. (So far anyway. I hesitate to bring him up today because he’ll be playing Clemson on national TV tonight and if he has a bad game then everyone will say I’m crazy and he sucks. I hope I’m not jinxing him. But he’s been good for his freshman and sophomore years and completes passes.)

Arm strength

I get so tired of hearing how strong of an arm a QB has, it makes no difference if he can throw it 80 yards but can’t complete the pass. Arm strength for me is one of the very last things you should consider, if you have two players all things being equal THEN take the guy with the better arm.

How tall a QB is should be considered to some degree, but if a shorter QB has shown the ability to find throwing lanes then I don’t see it being that big of a problem. But the NFL LOVES measurables.

I agree with you...

I just wanted to be realistic about his “weaknesses”.

If he wins...

the national championship I think that would be plenty to judge him on. By the way he had a sick year last year as well. (70% completion, won a conference title and BCS game)

We need 2 more QBs

We need a rookie, but there’s no one good enough to draft with our top 3 pick. We should try to trade down and get more picks.

And we don’t necessarily need to pick a QB in the first round, we just need to get one in the draft who has real potential. Every single QB in the draft is going to have downsides and issues with parts of their game. A lot of years the guys taken in the third or fourth have just as good a shot as the ones taken in the first round, they just have less publicity or are 1 inch shorter or whatever. I just hope we have Pioli drafting our next QB, because if it’s Peterson he will choose wrong again.

Additionally, we need to sign a veteran caretaker QB. Ideally it would be a guy in his late 20’s who has shown real flashes of NFL success in the past. Maybe Losman, I don’t know exactly who that should be, but that’s the profile we need.

But next year, our QBs need to be:
1. veteran free agent caretaker QB
2. Croyle if the new GM decides to give him another shot; otherwise a young-ish, 4th-year guy with potential
3. newly drafted rookie QB of the future

But if Peterson is still the GM, get ready for this QB depth chart next year:
1. Croyle
2. Huard
3. overdrafted young QB who will fail.

If Peterson & Herm are still here

I think they will dump Huard, keep Croyle and bring in another young QB. I think they are tired of the Huard merry-go-round and are ready to cut ties with him.

Isn't Warner a free agent after this year.

He would make a nice 1 year gap at the qb position. That way could draft a qb in the 2nd or 3rd round and let him learn behind a good qb.

I will be at the game in Dallas Saturday go Sooners.

I will be at the MU/TEX game

Go Horns (this weekend)

Go Tigers next weekend.

No, no...

Boomer Sooner, this week.

And I’ll be at OU/ KU next weekend (I’ll scout the QBs if I’m not too drunk).

The problem is...

this is one of the weakest classes for quarterbacks in years. The top prospects are Tebow and Bradford and they may not even declare. All of the 2nd tier quarterbacks in this class have considerably dropped their stock this season including Harper(clemson), Painter(purdue), and Straford(georgia). Bradford is the only one that I could go to bed at night and feel good about. As for the 3rd tier guys and beyond, I am all for bringing in a late round prospect but the chance of them working out are slim to none.
